Sunday October 25th 6-10PM Fundraiser for Erin ChackWhere: a club in Ridgewood, NJ To reserve tickets please email
krisell1951@yahoo.com and you will be emailed with all info about the show, your name will be on a list at the door where the tickets will be paid for:
Students $25 with ID. Everyone else: $50.
Tickets available for purchase in advance at Oradell Car and Motorcycle Show fundraiser, Oradell Veteran's Hall parking lot, Sunday October 18 3-6 PM.
Erin is a 19-year-old Oradell resident with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She is also a big Nada Surf fan. Erin was going to school at Boston University when she developed a stiff neck, which she assumed was a sports injury. A medical workup led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s. She has undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and is basically confined to home.
Because Erin's disease has left her unable to return to school, her insurance company has stopped payments for her very expensive treatment. She is currently on a temporary Cobra plan. It is estimated that her total treatment costs will exceed $200,000, of which her family is liable for 20%. You do the math.
Her parents, Joanne and John Chack have been big supporters of the kids in Ordell for years, with Joanne running a variety of nature study programs John donating his time coaching soccer and softball. They do so much for so many, so here's a chance to do something for them. Nada Surf was kind enough to pitch in and host a fundraiser concert at Blend Bar in nearby Ridgewood, NJ.

Hello Maplewoodian Friends --
Yes we've been AWOL, but we are ecstatic (and pleasantly surprised) to announce the release of our extremely long-awaited second long player, "Yeti Boombox," out on Tapete Records this week. Recorded in the abominable snowy winter of 2008, these 12-songs pick up right where we left off, although we can't really recall where we left off, since it was so long ago.
In addition to the new record, the past couple of years found us contributing songs to the Sidney Lumet movie "Before the Devil Knows Your Dead" and sitting in with everyone's favorite breeze-rock heroes, America, to record a version of our tune "Indian Summer" for their great "Here and Now" album. America's Gerry Beckley returned the favor by guesting on "Moonboot Canyon" -- our first apres ski anthem and the first cut on "Yeti Boombox." (It also features our friend Alan Weatherhead from Sparklehorse on pedal steel.)
The European tour begins in late September, with select dates in the States to be announced. Look for reviews in MOJO and UNCUT in the near future.
What, you may ask, is a YETI BOOMBOX? You can find out by acquiring the album -- CD, mp3 downloads, or limited-edition vinyl (note the painstakingly hand-stitched artwork by Megan Whitmarsh!) -- at Amazon, iTunes, emusic, or wherever fine music is sold (if not always bought).

"Songs From The Point!"
Interpretations of Harry Nilsson's Cult-Classic
Amano Recordings
Release Date: October 27th
Why should jazz have all the fun? Pop and indie artists too seldom throw their creative weight into the art of interpretation. But the sometimes dormant tradition is alive and well in a new revival of songs from The Point!, Harry Nilsson's 1971 cult-classic film and soundtrack, featuring new arrangements by Andrew Bird, Martha Wainwright, DeVotchKa, Nada Surf, and other contemporary artists.
( Download a promo copy here: http://www.amanorecordings.com/songsfromthepoint.zip )
In its original form, The Point! was a woolly animated TV-movie that told the story of Oblio, the only boy in the Pointed Village that did not have a point on top of his head. The fanciful tale of nonconformity and ultimate redemption in the Village speaks for kids and all imaginative souls who feel adrift in an overly rigid world populated by squares, straights, and other things defined by their points and sharp edges.
Pop vets Nada Surf, closest to Nilsson genetically among the musicians, add pep and a certain Zombies-esque vocal style to the boy-and-his-dog hit "Me and My Arrow". ⁄ Andrew Bird, the walking orchestra, sinks his technicolor skills into "Think About Your Troubles", ⁄ which navigates the cyclical magic of the way things work on earth. Gypsy-cowboys DeVotchka gallop The Point!'s expository tune "Everything's Got 'Em" through a string-laden carnival. SexMob backs high-voltage vocalist Catherine Russell's gospel soulfulness with their jazzed-up, freaked-out "Poli High". ⁄ Martha Wainwright duets with Jim Campilongo's twangy guitar on "P.O.V. Waltz," Denver's rising-star troubadour Nathaniel Rateliff amps up the charming lullabye "Are You Sleeping?" and in one of the album's most stirring performances, Dawn Landes imparts a dusty romanticism to "Lifeline", a gentle call for help by the lead character Oblio.
In the hands of these artists, Nilsson's lovingly goofy and quintessentially '70s songs emerge in new garb while retaining every ounce of imagination and wisdom of the originals. The artists all came together on the album to benefit 826NYC, the nonprofit group that provides creative-writing workshops and tutoring to kids aged 6 - 18. 826NYC will receive all proceeds from the album.
