As a new expanded and updated edition of Redemption is now available in bookstores and through Amazon, we are giving away our remaining first edition copies of Redemption, the book that is helping to revolutionize animal sheltering in the U.S.:

    1. If you are the executive director of a shelter or rescue group and you identify the organization as No Kill on the home page of your website, we'll give you a free copy.

    2. If you are the executive director of a shelter and you have announced a No Kill goal on the home page of your website, we'll give you a free copy.

    3. If you are an elected official and want to learn more about the No Kill movement, we'll give you a free copy.

    4. If you are an animal lover and you recently purchased a second edition copy, we'll give you a free copy.

Redemption is being called “powerful and inspirational,” “ground-breaking,” and “a must read for anyone who cares about animals.” Winner of USA Book News Award for Best Book (Animals/Pets), a Best Book Muse Medallion winner by the Cat Writers Association of America, a Best Book nominee by the Dog Writers Association of America and winner of a Silver Medal from the Independent Publishers Association, the book shatters the notion that killing animals in U.S. shelters is an act of kindness.

Friends,

We have a date for the final hearing to determine if we will again receive a special exception permit to continue operating Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary in Alachua County. Please mark your calendars and if there is any way for you to attend, PLEASE DO. The date is Tuesday, May 12, 2009, time is 5:00 PM. The hearing will be held in the Jack Durance Auditorium of the Alachua County Admin Building, located at 12 SE 1st St in Gainesville.

We will have bright yellow tags saying something like " We support Haven Acres" on the table outside the auditorium. Please wear them to show the county commissioners whose side you are on. It is very important that we have as many people there as possible. You can also email the County Commissioners at: bocc@alachuacounty.us

If you would also like to provide written comments to the Staff of Department of Growth Management, you can send them to 10 SW 2nd Ave, Gainesville Florida 32601-6294. Copies of the comments will be provided to the County Commissioners before the hearing. If you have any questions of staff, or desire further info, please contact the Developement Services Section at 352-374-5249.

Thank you so much for your continuing support of Haven Acres Cat Sanctuary.

Friends and supporters,

It is, once again, time to fight to stay in existence.  Haven Acres' application for a special use permit to continue operations at our residence in High Springs is again coming up for review.

To recap what has happened before:

We were granted a special use permit in 2007 by unanamous vote of the
Alachua County Commissioners even over the protests from High Springs.
Alachua County was then sued by the City of High Springs because of this.
Our permit was rescinded and we were able to re-apply at no additional charges ( the first time cost about $1500).  Alachua County rewrote some of the codes and separated dog kennels from cat facilities.

Our first hearing is coming up 4/15/09 Wednesday evening at 6 PM in the Alachua County Admin building in front of the Planning Commission.  The Board of Alachua County Commissioners will probably hear our permit request sometime next month.

We are still located on over 8 acres and are still in an agriculture status.  This still means we can have an unlimited number of cows, chickens, hogs, horses, sheep, goats, etc, but to have more that 20 cats, we have to have a permit.

High Springs is still complaining about our contaminating the city well even though several wells have been tested in the area (including ours) with no contamination.  Residents in Edgemoor subdivision complained at the last hearing about the smell even though none of the numerous county staff that has been here could smell anything unless they were very close to the cats.  We still rake the pens and bag the solid waste for the dumpster.

We need all the support we can get.  County staff has said this time that they are not recommending approval.  This is different from last time.  Please forward this to anyone you might think would be interested and please email the county commissioners your thoughts.  We will need as many people as possible to be at the hearing that will be held before the Alachua County Commissioners.  If we do not get the approval this time, I am not sure what will happen to the cats. The email address for the commission is: bocc@alachuacounty.us.

If you wish to see what happened at the last county commission hearing on this and have approx. 4 hours to spare, you can go to the Alachua County website and find the "video on demand" tab and watch the August 30, 2007 hearing.

We sincerely thank all of you for your support.
