Maestro has a gig on his birthday (he's turning 70!) at Dabora Gallery in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. More info on the gig list. But the BIG news is that he's been invited to Palermo, Italy, to take part in a major concert tribute to the late great Tony Scott, Perry's close friend, mentor and major jazz clarinetist, artist and cultural ambassador. The concert will take place on October 1st and will be filmed. Perry will be a major part of the proceedings and an interview with him will also be filmed.

Perry heard almost immediately from Randy Kaye that Perry's old friend/mentor Jimmy Giuffre passed away on April 24th. RIP Jimmy.
Perry recently recorded a duo record with pianist Burton Greene, right after their appearance at the Stone. It will be out on Tzadik later this year. Tzadik will also be releasing Klez-Edge, a stripped-down version of Burton's band Klezmokum, featuring Perry, at the end of June. Perry will be appearing with Wynne Paris's Groovananda at the Jivamukti Yoga Center on May 31 at a Benefit For Bonobos, with special guests Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) and Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors). Perry also recently recorded a duet record with his good friend percussionist Muruga Booker, which will be out at some point on Qbico (vinyl) and Amie Street (download). Their earlier recording Free Funk featuring Peter Madcat Ruth on harmonica is also available at the same websites. Another recording featuring Perry has also been released recently: drummer Jonathan Lamar Edwards' Traveler.
Maestro remains busy: he has been taking part in a very interesting recording project up in the Hudson Valley (to be revealed hopefully before very long), and he will be making his annual trip to Germany for the Freiburg Festival this summer.

Nat Hentoff writing about Anat Fort's ECM release A Long Story in Jazz Times: Along with Schuller and Motian, yet another singular jazz voice is present: Perry Robinson on clarinet and ocarina. As Richard Cook writes in his invaluable Jazz Encyclopedia (Penguin), "Robinson is one of the very few to make a go of creating a place for the clarinet in the jazz avant-garde." Actually, whatever "avant-garde" means in the flow of fashion, Robinson plays what I call "soul music."
