December residency at Silverlake Lounge.

cold war kids
Hey folks: one of the best new local bands we've come across this past year is the four-piece band Cold War Kids from Fullerton, CA. They sent us a demo back in the spring 2005, and in the month of May we saw them live for the first time. They've been winning fans and admirers at each show since. They have a drone-discordancy in the Jonnie Bo Russell's lead guitar parts reminiscent of Television, a foot-stomping, harmonica-slinging lead singer Nathan Willett with a Bolanesque vibrato for the folk/blues, and a marching rhythm section of bass and drums, straight from the Walkmen school, who drive the band forward by clapping their hands and shuffling their feet as well as playing their own instruments. Each guy really seems irreplaceable, as they're one of those uniquely coherent bands that'd be hard to imagine without each of it's component parts. The L.A. times has apparently noticed them too, declaring about them that "In recent club shows and on their homemade EP, [lead guitarist] Jonnie Bo Russell's stabbing riffs and Nathan Willett's pained vocals augur greatness for this potent Orange County quartet."
Listen to an mp3 of HEAVY BOOTS here.
COLD WAR KIDS play Monday, December 5, 12, and 19th at Silverlake Lounge. No cover.

Los Angeles, CA - The Fold is proud to present Paris-based NOUVELLE VAGUE for a two night stand at Tangier on the 5th and 6th of January in 2006. “Taking their moniker from the 60s New Wave of cult French cinema, Nouvelle Vague are a French musical collective put together by arrangers Marc Collins and Olivier Libaux. The group’s raison d’etre is to resurrect lost classics from the 80's New Wave music and reinterpret them in a saucy bossa nova style. Replacing the inherent broodiness and aggression of songs like The Dead Kennedy’s Too Drunk To F**k and Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart with insouciant Latino rhythms shouldn't work, but it really, really does.” says the BBC. Some of the songs are stripped back to acoustic arrangements with lithe shaker rhythms achieved by gathering a parade of heavenly chanteuses from all over the world (six French, one Brazilian and one New Yorker) as guest vocalists to sex up everyone from XTC and Modern English to The Clash and The Undertones.

Los Angeles, CA - The Fold is proud to present Innaway, The Shore, and Marjorie Fair at the Silverlake Lounge on Tuesday, December 13. All three of these Los Angeles based acts have played separate Fold residencies in the very recent past.
Marjorie Fair was recently praised in Uncut as creating "lilting, fragile sounds" that "massage the shoulders of fans of Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips, Neil Young and Kevin Shields." Innaway was described in Spin as making "slippery music... a mixture of old fashioned psychedelia with electronic influences and bluesy riffs," and the LA Weekly says of The Shore that "they roll their rusty wheels way back to the canyon days of Neil Young and to Wish You Were Here-era Pink Floyd for inspiration, while soaring through Radiohead-like space dust."
The three bands join forces tonight for a show we've wanted to put together for a while. Innaway plays at 10p, The Shore at 11p, and Marjorie Fair at midnight.
