The press has been very kind to us, and we are truly grateful. Thanks to everyone who helped make this so special. Listen to Woody Guthrie, read his writings and celebrate his life -it changed my life and i hope it affects you the same way.

CMJ Crush Band: National Seashore

October 15th, 2007 | 3:29 pm est | by Matt Collar
Essentially the rootsy brainchild of singer-songwriter John Biz, the Brooklyn-based National Seashore is a melodic and folk-inflected group conceptualized around reinterpretations of the legendary songs of Woody Guthrie. With a sound that's a little bit Wilco — who navigated these exact same waters with Billy Bragg on the Mermaid Avenue albums — a tad New Pornographers, and even a dash of early R.E.M., National Seashore may just get you to hear Guthrie's songs again (or for the first time).
The group is scheduled to play at the Tank on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

National Seashore

National Seashore hail from Brooklyn and are fronted by singer-songwriter John Biz, a talented young man with varying musical interests. I'm getting the feeling that Biz has a challenging time sitting still; which is good for you, I mean, us, as music fans. He's got several musical persona and founded a label on top of it all to put all this great music out. The label is called Industrial Park Records and it's filled with great music to listen to and buy. Biz can rock with the best of them and he can also lead some pretty cool sittin' around the campfire sessions as well. For his National Seashore project, he was inspired by his love for Woody Guthrie and took some cures from the Billy Bragg/Wilco collaboration. National Seashore was born out of that passion and serves as a collective to interpret the lyrics of Guthrie. And it's a beautiful knockout. I'm still trying to connect the dots, however, Biz also has something to do with the band called Higgins, who probably could be like Fall Out Boy but prefer riffing off XTC and Badfinger. Ah, but this is really about National Seashore, I guess.

CMJ Report: Tuesday Night in the Tank" CMJ Report: Tuesday Night in the Tank

October 17th, 2007 | 11:02 am
Industrial Park Records, the East Williamsburg-based label run by John Biz, a workhorse of a man who not only spent the entire showcase last night at the Tank — where the risers and folding chairs made the small bar seem more like rehearsal space than anything else –- introducing and promoting the artists, thanking everyone who's been supportive of them, but also performing two sets himself. He's certainly no one-trick pony. Besides Biz, who first appeared onstage as part of the Woodie Guthrie tribute band National Seashore and then with the punk-influenced John Biz & the Rolling Stallones, trippy duo Norris and a Bob-Dylan-esque set by Joey Weiss (aka Super Monster) both provided solid examples of what the label can do.

CMJ07 Recommendations for Tuesday, October 16:

Industrial Park Records label Showcase @ The Tank

Steal global, buy local

Said it before, but I was reminded tonight during the Industrial Park Records CMJ showcase at the Tank: steal global, buy local.
That is: download/appropriate/pilfer whatever music you need by any means necessary, so long as you support local musicians when you can by going to their gigs, buying their tour CDs, a tee-shirt, or whatever. The locality, a slippery term in this age, is whatever neighborhood/karass/clique/scene you choose to define.

Industrial Park Records @ CMJ Showcase TONIGHT (10.16.07) 6:30-12
Featuring Art and live sketching By Michael Alan -

Aloha! Industrial Park Records was founded in 2003 in East Williamsburg Industrial Park, Brooklyn. We are a working band's label, run by artists for artists. Our goal is not to become the "biggest", but rather the smallest, most focused label we can be. We put our heart and soul behind our work, and we are relentless. We make music and art we can stand behind, pure and simple. We don't make promises to our artists that we can't keep, and we always try to provide a start for smaller bands to allow them to grow. We don't make corporate moves that crush the craftsmen we represent. We pride ourselves in our filtration of commercial garbage faux "art" so that we can provide a platform for true artists who actually have something to say, and we help connect those artists to true fans on a grassroots level. In the end, we believe that our commitment to quality will speak for itself. We strongly encourage you to listen.

Industrial Park Records - NEW SITE

Norris 7:15
Mainly self-taught, each of Norris' members play at least three of the following: guitars, cellos, synthesizers, organs, basses, drums, drum machines, vox, and tapes. Norris' music has been performed in every borough of the New York area, and venues in Miami, FL, and Austin, TX. Juse hails from Lafayette, Indiana where he studied music and acting. El was born in Austin, and arrived in NYC by way of the Juilliard School. Carl, formerly known as the electric insect, spent most of his life playing music in Dallas, before making the big move up north. Heavily influenced by the blues, and home-made instruments, Norris has a reputation for putting on shows ranging from performance art to your typical rock concert. Norris performs in dive bars as well as theaters in Lincoln Center. Often teaming up with dancers, film makers, and visual artists, these interdisciplinary developments continue to push Norris' music to new boundaries.

Super Monster 8:45
Super Monster is the kind of group that you will fall in love with. The NYC based power trio's rare creative engine is driven by passionately expressive vocals, naked lyrics and masterful ultra-fuzz guitar. The infectious rhythms and nasty melodic frequencies are built by dirty NYC surfers having way too much fun to be "indie" – the kind of music that makes sharks fight zombies and serial killers plant flowers. Their warm, lo-fi tape recordings have often been compared to the likes of Daniel Johnston, The Velvet Underground, and Link Wray. Think "Basement Tapes meets Batman." Live, Super Monster plays dirty garage rock n' roll with a punk rock attitude. Some people call them an old-school boy band, while others claim that they sound like "the kind of band you expect to hear at a 1960's strip club." Their concerts are wild and fun and they can usually be found playing all night at house/loft parties in and around the five boroughs. The boys of Super Monster love cage fighting, distortion, and three-part harmonies. This raw talent brings the noise like rock n' roll is supposed to.

National Seashore 9:30
Compelled by the story behind Mermaid Avenue, a 28 year old artist offers a heartfelt interpretation of American folk hero Woody Guthrie's material from his own impressionistic perspective. The artist is John Biz, the setting is Brooklyn, NY and the musicians who made it all happen became collectively known as National Seashore. The sketches came together in what Biz regards as a very spiritual experience, incorporating interpretations of Woody Guthrie lyrics with the music from his dreams. Avoiding what he considered a superficial recreation of a style that Woody had already perfected, his intent was to honor the spirit of the song and its author by playing the music in his own voice. The spirited young troubadour put together National Seashore, featuring members of Apollo Sunshine, Kevin Devine & the God Damn Band, The Unsacred Hearts and SuperMonster. The band came together in a matter of days, freshly embracing each song in real time while recording to tape at Serious Business Records in Brooklyn. The result: each song is a living, breathing entity captured as it was created in celebration of Woody Guthrie, the man widely regarded as "The Voice of The People."

john biz 10:15
John Biz was born in Brooklyn and grew up on a steady diet of street fighting and punk rocking on Staten Island. Inspired by shows at the now defunct Rock Palace and looking for a more aggressive outlet, Biz was fronting bands at the age of 13. Biz dove headfirst into his heartfelt calling at a bungalow in Long Beach, NY, where he would paint all day and spend all night recording music in creative isolation. After moving to Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2002, Biz set up shop in the shadow of the Bushwick project houses, where he founded Industrial Park Records. In 2005, Biz was invited for a recording session with legendary artist/engineer Steve Albini (Shellac, Pixies, Nirvana) at Albini's Electrical Audio. With a few loosely sketched songs, no band, and the recording just weeks away, he embraced the storm, channeling an expansive artistic statement thru a minimalist palette. Backed by a ferocious trio featuring bassist Dave Patrikios (The Realistics, Greensleep) and drummer Stephen Chopek (Charlie Hunter) John Biz presents a deceptively simple, high impact album; a dark forest of intricate sound and color to lose yourself in. The album has the honest raw energy of early punk rock influences such as Husker Du, The Ramones and The Replacements, but with lush, confessional vocal melodies, touching upon The Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground. John Biz is laying the groundwork for a new Steve Albini recording this November.

Higgins 11:00
Sometime during the late nineties Kevin met Brian. Brian, who was drumming for Zygomatic, had heard Kevin's guitar work in The Delicious Trees and Jaha. In 1999, Brian moved to Weehawken, NJ, and eventually convinced Kevin to do the same. Early on, the boys realized that they shared a number of musical influences, including Yes, The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Kevin Ayers, and T-Rex. Naturally, they moved into an apartment and started writing and recording songs in their bedrooms and kitchen. After the release of their first full-length Higgins record "Dear Higgins," Kevin and Brian began honing their live sound as a two piece. Looking for a bass player to handle the intricate lines recorded by Kevin and Brian, the boys enlisted the help of Andrew, from the old-timey Two Man Gentlemen Band. When Higgins needed another guitar player, Kevin rang Josh. When Higgins was looking to develop its sound even further, Kevin bought a Wurlitzer and called Jordan and Eric to play percussion and guitar, respectively. Higgins sounds like what good friends playing music together SHOULD sound like. Kevin's unique songwriting and the boys' strong musicianship allows the band to thrive playing delicate, melodic numbers, as well as majestic rockers. All you have to do is listen.
