A year ago Maveal signed up on etsy.com, an online marketplace for handmade goods, and has since sold 700 of her pieces.

"That's really when I was able to be independent with it and make money with it," she said. Her work is also sold in 40 stores in Michigan and around the world because of etsy.com.

Maveal and more than 30 other local crafters and artists with stores on etsy.com will bring their goods from cyberspace to the brick-and-mortar world at the Michigan Indie Crafters of Etsy (or MICE) Craft Extravaganza this Saturday at the Main Art Theatre.

Maveal, 27 of Royal Oak, and Heidi Muszall created MICE in April so they could hold events with and support other local etsy.com members.

Muszall, 29 of Ferndale, joined etsy.com in January after a friend taught her how to knit, and she sells hand-sewn and embroidered cat toys along with picture frames and mirrors.

"When I was in school (College for Creative Studies) I had done a lot of different crafts, glass blowing and welding and things like that," she said. "After graduating and working an office job full time, I was missing that creative outlet."

She said she was reading the forums at etsy.com and saw some crafters were thinking about holding a craft show in Michigan. Other etsy.com groups have been putting on shows in other states for years, she said.

Muszall decided to start a local group, and Maveal offered to help. Etsy.com has helped out by providing promotional materials, advertising and suggestions.

"We talked to other etsy artists all over the world and bounced ideas about how to put on the show," Maveal said.

After word got out about the show, they were inundated with more than 70 applications and about another 30 artists showed interest in the show, many more than Maveal and Muszall expected or could fit in the venue they chose.

Maveal said the large amount of interest, though, will help MICE put on more craft shows.

"We're supporting independent artists and each other," she said. "It's nice to be connected and support each other that way."

The Craft Extravaganza will have 34 crafters selling reconstructed clothing, pottery, cards, jewelry, photography and more. Except for a couple vendors, the crafters are all in their 20s and 30s.

"We're sort of taking your grandma's crafts and updating them for a younger, modern audience," Maveal said.

Sarah Mulally, 31 of Royal Oak, will be selling pails, placemats, trinket boxes and other items she's decorated with vintage images from old children's books and greeting cards.

"Since the birth of my daughter (who is 18 months), I've felt a kind of creative void in my life," she said by e-mail. "While I was decorating her nursery, which is in a vintage theme, I had a hard time finding exactly what I wanted for the room. That's when I decided to make 'stuff.'"

"When I was accepted, I started freaking out a little bit, but I finally met Danielle and she is so laid back that it made me feel way more at ease," she said. "I am confident that the show is going to be a success thanks to the efforts of Danielle and Heidi as well as the amazing vendors. Such talent!"
