Red Clay Halo takes its name from a Gillian Welch song and musically the four women (West Australian born and reared, now British based, Emily Barker on guitar with her British companions on violin, cello and accordion) capture something of the desolation and space of Welch's work without appearing to be transplanted Americana or finger-in-the-ear traditional British Isles folk. Recorded live over four days in a barn in Norfolk, England, Despite the Snow uses elements of both styles -- and even includes a musical saw, if things weren't rustic enough -- as Barker creates an intimate song cycle celebrating the sublime glory of falling in love. From the longing in the opener Nostalgia (which can be heard on the BAFTA-nominated soundtrack to Wallander), most of the songs are filled with a wide-eyed take on love. An earthier male perspective is added via two outside contributions: the speedy, brief instrumental I It's All Night Long, which wordlessly reinforces the dancing-sex metaphor, while Mike Waterson's Bright Phoebus heads south of the belly button with its none too subtle verse about a cock crowing for the first time. Rather than distract, these tracks add a welcome physical dimension to this sweet tribute to the greatest of all human conditions.

Wallander
wins Bafta! Late last year, Emily’s song Nostalgia was
re-recorded for use as title & end credits music for Wallander, a major new
drama adaptation for BBC One starring the revered British actor Kenneth
Branagh. The series, which attracted over 6 million viewers per episode, has
now won a Bafta award and is nominated in 5 other categories for
behind-the-scenes work including Titles sequence and Original Music.
UK
tour a resounding success – In March this year the band embarked on an 18-date UK tour
peppered with sold out shows and BBC local radio sessions.
Emily
has been selected to perform at the Western Australian Music festival (WAMi) this May, which will be
accompanied by several shows in WA and the release in Australia of her latest
studio album Despite The Snow. Lead track from the album, Disappear, has been
picking up radio play in Australia on the likes of JJJ, PBS and RRR radios
whilst in the UK, 6 Music’s Tom Robinson and Gideon Coe have both played
Emily’s contribution to the Arctic Circle Christmas EP project, a track named
Unreasonable Dream: Christmas Night.
7”
vinyl single and digital double A-side release “Despite The Snow” and “This Is
How It’s Meant To Be”:
A-side “Despite The Snow”,
the title of Emily Barker’s second studio album now reveals itself as a song
written to accompany a short, silent film by Patti Gaal Holmes which in turn
was inspired by the subject of dreams and by Robert Graves' love poem called
'she tells her love whilst half asleep.'
AA-side track “This Is How It's Meant To Be” was recorded in a single live take
during The Granary Barn album sessions one snowy weekend in last March, with
the four members of the Red Clay Halo (Emily on acoustic guitar and vocal, Gill
Sandell on accordion, Jo Silverston on cello and Anna Jenkins on violin)
sitting around a few microphones, a couple of electric bar heaters and with
blankets over knees.

‘stripped free of studio frippery and all the better for its carefree simplicity’ **** - Q
‘a masterpiece that will not fade in time.’ **** Maverick
‘strong melodies that at times evoke images of Richard and Linda Thompson… as strong a collection of acoustic folk songs that I have heard for a long time’ 8/10 – Americana-uk.com
‘There’s that haunted folksy sound to Emily’s vocals which recalls Natalie Merchant’s expressive voice… a superb album’ – Pennyblackmusic.co.uk
‘stunningly beautiful’ – Electric Ghost
‘music that's going to take you away from the scummy smog filled streets and leave you in a warm forest dappled with green light shining through the leaves of sycamores and ancient oak’ – Unpeeled.net
‘Nobody sounds quite like them, and there are moments of transcendence here (on ‘Nostalgia and ‘All Love Knows’ in particular) when everything is just so...perfect that it’s all too much and a lump appears in the throat. An album of quiet power.’ **** Rock ‘n’ Reel
also, the first track the album, 'Nostalgia' has been used as title and end credits in a BBC One drama series called Wallander starring the revered actor Kenneth Brannagh. And...this music has now been nominated for a BAFTA!

Update:
Newcastle…. Really lovely gig, first time in the Cluny for The Red Clay Halo. Great sound, small but lovely crowd. Thanks to the Jumping Hot Club for having us. The smallest backstage of the tour so far, with a very funny wall of fame, including, amongst others “Rachel Bumwank and the Incest”, “Wank Turner” and “The Broken Mammary Gland”. Tee hee hee……… Someone anonymous had amusingly renamed us “Emily Farter and The Red Gay Halo”. Some may say this is quite accurate!
Then off up the M6 to Glasgow. We played at the Mono, a gorgeous venue with Vegan food and an exceptional record store. The crowd was sadly very small indeed, but the sound was so good that it made up for it. Anna was convinced our rhubarb crumble was in fact a banana fritter. Thanks to Steve for putting us up in his flat. We managed to escape the City without crossing into the BAD LANDS!!!!! Phew.
A little trip over to Edinburgh, where the wonderful Megan put us up in her beautiful apartment. We played Leith Folk club, which was brilliant. Wonderful crowd, great atmosphere, delicious ale, and a member of Braeback all made for a very fun evening. By the 8th gig in a row, we were all a little delirious, Anna stripping mid set, and tears by the end of the performance. It’s a good job we had a day off the next day. Well, I say a day off, more like a day in the car, as we headed back to Yorkshire for an interview on Radio Teesdale.
We performed as part of a 2 hour show for Colin. We had a break of 20 minutes, and decided we absolutely had to have a drink, so we sprinted to the pub, downed a pint, and were back on air by 8pm. At this point I have to apologise to our audience. In a moment of overexcitement, Gill managed to say “Ifuckinloveyou”, not realising we were on air. That’s us, rock n’ roll as they come, swearing before the watershed.
Many thanks to Ray for an incredible meal, for giving up his bed for us, and to his beautiful cats Sweetycat !!! and Candylion!!!
On on to Leicester. xx

Current mood: blah
Setting the scene.
We sit nestled in a valley in the North York Moors, with the sound of bleeting lambs and the spring call of birds in the still naked trees. Daffodils line the river flowing at the bottom of the hill and the craggy bleak land is brought to life by the morning sun shine. Farndale. Last night we played the Band Room, a 1920’s tin shed, built for the local silver band. It is such a remote and isolated place, you would never expect to find such a magical venue at the heart of it. Folk came from far and close: Liverpool, Newcastle and a walk over the hills. As the night drew in, we all huddled into the warm hall, and the evening commenced. It felt completely timeless, with a humble stage, candles and wooden tables and chairs. We felt instantly welcome and accepted into the community. A perfect crowd. A couple of hecklers to get us fired up, and real attention to all of our songs. The Jigs and Reels went down a treat. An absolutely incredible evening, we all greatly enjoyed it, and it will stay with us for a long time on the rest of our journey. After the show we ascended the hill to our cottage on the Moors. The stars were bright and numerous, a sight we very rarely get the pleasure of seeing in the City sky. Then the feast began. A gourmet meal cooked by our wonderful hosts, red wine AND to top it all off, apple crumble and cream. Wow! What a special time.
Anna’s twitching update: Coal Tit, Dunnock (seen this time), Chaffinch, Sparrow Hawk, Canadian Geese, Pigeon, Blackbird, Pied Wag Tail, Pheasant, Long-Tailed Tit, Magpie, Rook, Jackdaw, Nuthatch, Blue Tit, and most excitingly… a Red-Legged Partridge!
Word of the day: Frolick
Thank-you’s:
Big thank you to Bernie Philips in Manchester for having us stay and looking after us all so well in her big, beautiful house with beds in the basements for bands on tour. We loved our time in Manchester, especially perusing the shops of the Northern quarter in all their retro glory.
Also thanks to the wonderful Kate and Oliver in Thirsk for another incredible gig. We played The Old Courthouse. Fabulous venue, great crowd, delicious curry cooked by Kate and a wonderful place to wake up in the morning.
Misc:
Seems we are pretty HOT at the moment, with our gigs at the top of the gigs to see this week in the Independent Entertainment section. Even got our mug shot included! Much excitement.
On On to Newcastle! Love from us all x
