Aquila - imperium

Category: reviews, featured record

Metal from Canada is always welcome on our pages. Aquila do exactely that, and present a nice, heavy full length on CDN Records, a yet to me unkwown record label.

Mixing basically a whole bunch of subgenres of metal, these guys present quite a nice release as their debut. Defying a final categorisation, these folks mix melodies with classic metal, add a bit of Death & thrash and NWOAHM and maybe metalcore, and out comes quite an interesting mixture. You may think of other modern metal-acts such as God Forbid, KillSwitchEngage or Machine Head for further reference.

However, before searching for more drawers these guys do not really fit in, let’s take a closer look at the music. Aquila have a good hand for melodies, that is quite clear quite early on the record. A lot of their riffs are remarkable and easy to remember, and also add a nice, warm feeling to the record, which is apart from that of course quite aggressive. Other tracks, such as „kill or be killed“ have a deep rocking structure, while the melodies play only a second role. The vocals shred quite a lot, with screaming and shouting and almost singing, covering a really good range, and sometimes reminding of how KillSwitchEngage did this once.

Pace-wise, these guys have a really good hand for mixing it up quite well. Deadly mosh is well combined with fast parts, rocking moments are thrown in the mix just at the right moment – „never to awake“ portraits all this quite well. The accustic interlude then lets no question that these guys are really metal, before „suffer and solitude“ kicks it off quite well in that modern metal fashion that is quite popular these days – while not everyone manages to present it as convincing as these Canadians do it on here. Again, this song has it all: melodic leads, fast parts, slowdowns – all metal, all fun. Songs like „no forgiveness“ also add some nice complexity to their sound, with good rhythmsection work and nice ideas for keeping the tension throughout the track. Another highlight, yes.

As a bottomline, this is more than solid, and I am sure that Century Media or Roadrunner are already banging at the door of these guys. Not only do they serve a style which is quite popular right now, they also do this in very convincing, entertaining and honest way. Well done. Check them out at www.myspace.com/aquilametal for more impressions.

Aquila - Imperium
CDN Records - 2009

Having been a enormous fan of Aquila since their 2007 self-titled demo (and drooled all the fuck over their 2008 Demo II), it is with GREAT pleasure that I am now bestowed with the honor of reviewing Aquila’s first full length album, “Imperium”! (Geez! Gushy, much? - Echidna) Boarding on the lines of metalcore and melodic death metal, Aquila play like each song could be their last; with a passion and fury that cannot be quelled by any means! “Imperium” shows a sound that has been maturing since their last effort last year. The solos have become more complex as have the lyrics and over the top drumming. Throat maestro Mark Arruda is easily one of the best metalcore vocalists out there and belts out some of the most abusive screams and deafening roars in the history of abusive screams and deafening roars! “Imperium” also features some re-recordings of some songs off of their previous demos. All of which are major improvements over the originals (and that should mean a lot coming from me). Overall, “Imperium” does not disappoint in any way, shape or form. If you’re a fan of passionate, melodic and grandiose metal, pick this album up!  -  :)  Typhon

CD BREAKDOWN
by Dalson Chen
Thursday June 17th, 2009

AQUILA - IMPERIUM
"In our darkness, we will prevail." So roars this Windsor metal quintet. And judging by their long-awaited full-length album, I'm inclined to believe them. Fans of the genre will find plenty to sink their teeth into here: Catchy riffs, solid yet dynamic song construction, aggressive but varied vocals, tons of cool tech guitar parts. You'll even hear some groovy rock amidst the carnage. Most of these 10 songs are re-recorded versions of tracks that have appeared on Aquila's previous EPs -- honed and refined for formal release. Some tracks now feature guest vocals from local metal warriors such as Betrayer's Jeff Klingbeil and Bloodshoteye's Jessica Desjardins. Other tracks have been injected with fresh venom through sharpened riffage and ramped-up tempos. The new material doesn't disappoint either: The appropriately titled track Breathing Fire, Breathing Life is a fistful of furious riffs condensed into three minutes of awesome. Check out the funkiness at the 1:26 mark, then raise your horns at 2:08. The coolest thing to me about Aquila is the sense of war-torn triumph that pervades through all their stuff. It's metal for the conquering Roman general in you. Online: www.myspace.com/aquilametal

IMPERIUM

(Rimac solo)

IN OUR DARKNESS

OUR EYES BLEED DARKNESS

OUR WHISPERS SCREAM SILENCE

FOREVER WE HIDE IN THE SHADOWS

WITH EVERY TOUCH TURNS TO VIOLENCE

OUT OF YOUR SIGHT, WE LIVE

IN FORGOTTEN HOURS, WE APPEAR

LOST IN THE DARK

BROKEN IS YOUR HEART

WALKING AWAY, FORGETTING ALL

WE KILL YOUR HOPES AND WE ARE YOUR FEARS

MOMENTS AS DAYS, HOURS AS YEARS

OF STARING INTO NOTHING THAT PASSES US BY

VISIONS, DECEPTIONS AND DARK FEARS

A WORLD OF MEMORIES, WISHING TO DIE

LISTEN TO A WORLD OF SILENCE

LOST IN THE COLD

ENDLESS DEPTH OF ONESELF

A WORLD OF MEMORIES, WISHING TO DIE

MISTAKES ARE MADE AND REGRETS ARE ENDLESS

THEY DRAG US TO SLOW US DOWN

PREPARE OURSELVES BEFORE DARKNESS ASCENDS

WE MUST PREVAIL AND WE WILL OVERCOME

BREAK THROUGH THE DARKNESS

BREAK THROUGH THE HORRORS AND FEARS

IN OUR DARKNESS, WE WILL PREVAIL

IN OUR DARKNESS, WE FACE OUR FEARS

BREAK THROUGH THE DARKNESS

BREAK THROUGH THE HORRORS AND FEARS

WITHIN THESE FLAMES

FROM THE SHADOWS OF MY DYING BLISS

THIS FIRE LURKS DEEP DOWN INSIDE OF ME

YOU CAN SEE IT IN MY EYES BURNING WITH RAGE, RESPECT AND PRIDE

WITHIN THESE EYES

 RAGE, RESPECT AND PRIDE

AND I TASTE YOUR SORROW

FOR YOU, THERE IS NO TOMORROW

DRAG YOU BACK UNDER THE HOLLOW STONE

WITHOUT DESIRE AND WITHOUT HOPE

WITHIN THESE FLAMES

MY HEART AND MY FIRE

WINTHIN THESE FLAMES MY BLOOD AND MY DESIRE

FUELED BY MY FIRE (WITHIN THESE FLAMES)

DRIVEN BY DESIRE

MY STRENGTH AND MY BELIEFS (WITHIN THESE FLAMES)

ARE MY OWN AND YOU SHALL BURN

AND THIS FIRE SHALL RISE DEEP INSIDE OF ME

 AND I TASTE YOUR SORROW

FOR YOU, THERE IS NO TOMORROW

DRAG YOU BACK UNDER THE HOLLOW STONE

WITHOUT DESIRE AND WITHOUT HOPE

 ( Rimac solo)

DESTROY THE EMPIRES OF MY PAIN

YOU ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME

FOREVER YOU SHALL LIVE IN FEAR AND LET THESE FLAMES BURNS

AND LET THESE FLAMES BURN

AND LET THEM BURN

KILL OR BE KILLED

SO HOW DOES IT FEEL

WHEN YOU SEE YOUR LIFE FLASHING BEFORE YOU

THIS THREAT IS REAL

THE GAMES ARE FUCKING OVER

DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU

IT’S BLOOD FOR BLOOD

I HEAR THE CRY OF A BROKEN MAN

YOUR EXISTENCE HAD DRAINED MY LIFE

KILL OR BE KILLED

CONSQUENCE WRITTEN

KILL OR BE KILLED

YOUR INQUISTION

DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU

MY ANGER’S RELENTLESS, RENEW AND NEVER GONE

YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CAN’T FUCKING HIDE

KILL OR BE KILLED

CONSQUENCE WRITTEN

KILL OR BE KILLED

YOU’RE INQUISITION

DOWN

CHOKE YOU TILL YOUR LAST DYING BREATH

MY SATISFACTION IS TO WITNESS YOUR DEMISE

KILL OR BE KILLED

I SEE REMORSE IN YOUR EYES

I HEAR REMORSE IN YOUR CRIES

YOU WON’T SEE THE PLEASURE IN MY JADED EYES

IN MY EYES

FADED IS YOUR DIGNITY

FADED IS MY TRUST IN YOU

FOREVER IN MY HEART YOU SHALL REMAINED PERISHED

(Shelson solo)

NEVER TO AWAKE

GRAINS OF SAND ARE FALLING, SMASH THE HOURGLASS

THE SIGHT OF IT INVOKES HIS FEAR

WHISPERS TURN TO SILENCE

THE HORROR, THE HORROR IN HIS EYES

AS THE ANGELS MOURNED, A DAY OF AGONY

BLACK ABYSS, FULL OF RAGE

A FATE HE CANNOT RESTRAIN

IS IT DESTINY?  LOST COTROL

NO PRAYER FOR THIS IMMORTAL

SHATTERED

ALONE

FORGOTTEN FROM THIS WORLD

TEARS OF RAGE, TEARS OF SORROW

VISIONS OF MISERY

AND FROM THE ASHES

CAN HE SET HIMSELF FREE?

FREE FROM THESE CHAINS OF HIS OWN SLAVERY

UNLEASH THE DARKNESS OF HIS DESTINY

SACRIFICE MUST BE MADE

HELL BOUND FOREVER

FALLEN TEARS CAN’T TAKE AWAY THE PAIN

TEARS OF RAGE, TEARS OF SORROW

EVERYTHING HE ONCE LOVED

THIS LOVE HE COULD NEVER BETRAY

 HE SOLD HIS SOUL

DON’T TRUST THE BEAST, FOREVER SCORNED

UNLEASH THE DARKNESS OF HIS DESTINY

SACRIFICE MUST BE MADE

HELL BOUND FOREVER

FALLEN TEARS CAN’T TAKE AWAY THE PAIN

TEARS OF RAGE, TEARS OF SORROW

FOREVER ALONE

COULD THIS BE THE END?

COULD THIS BE THE END OF HIS EVERLASTING PAIN?

CLOSE THE GATES

UNLEASH YOUR RAGE

SACRIFICE MUST BE MADE

CLOSE YOUR EYES

NEVER TO AWAKE

(Rimac solo)

VAE VICTUS

(Shelson solo, Rimac solo)

SUFFER AND SOLITUDE

THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES

WE SOMETIMES WONDER WHY?

STARING AT THE WORLD THROUGH BLINDED EYES

FEAR TO FACE OUR DEMISE

VENGEANCE FOR THEIR BLOOD

WE’VE SEEN SO MANY FALL

DESTRUCTION OF CIVILIZATIONS

THIS NATION SHALL DROWN

CONDEMNED TO SUFFER

CONDEMNED TO SEEK THE TRUTH

THE BLOOD OF THE ANGELS HAVE STAINED OUR HANDS

SHATTERING OUR EXISTENCE

ONLY THE SURVIVE

CONDEMNED TO HELL

CONDEMNED TO…

SUFFER AND SOLITUDE

TOGETHER WE MUST STRIVE TO SURVIVE

EMBRACE FALSE JUSTICE

THIS NATION SHALL DROWN

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

POISONED BY CHEMICAL WARFARE

A STRUGGLE FOR THE HUMAN RACE

THIS FATE WE HAVE DENIED

EMBRACE FALSE JUSTICE

THIS NATION SHALL DROWN

IN A WORLD SO COLD

THIS IS OUR TIME WE MUST TAKE HOLD

TAKE A HOLD OF OUR FUTURE

THIS IS OUR WORLD

TOGETHER WE MUST STRIVE TO SURVIVE

SAVE US?

WHO WILL SAVE US?

WHEN CAN’T EVEN SAVE OURSELVES

(Shelson solo)

SUFFER AND SOLITUDE

TOGETHER WE MUST STRIVE TO SURVIVE

NO FORGIVENESS

THOSE LIPS THAT I THOUGHT WERE SO SWEET

SO BLIND YOUR LIES CAN BE

BUT SHE’S SO BEAUTIFUL, BUT I KNOW SHE’S SO EVIL

HAUNTED BY HER SILENT SCREAMS

AND THE EMPTINESS IN HER EYES

AS I SCREAM GOOD BYE FROM HER NIGHTMARES AND HER HAUNTED SCREAMS

HER DEMONS TAKE CONTROL

SHE HAS NEVER FELT SO ALONE

INSIDE SHE IS DYING

INSIDE SHE HAS NEVER FELT SUCH…

EMPTINESS

SHE FADES AWAY

WORTHLESS

SHE’S SO ALONE

THERE’S NO FORGIVENESS IN MY HEART FROM ALL THE PAIN SHE PUT ME THROUGH

 HER DECEPTIONS, HER ADDICTIONS

HER DEMONS TAKE CONTROL

SHE HAS NEVER FELT SO ALONE

INSIDE SHE IS DYING

INSIDE SHE HAS NEVER FELT SUCH…

EMPTINESS

SHE FADES AWAY

WORTHLESS

SHE’S SO ALONE

HOW CAN I FORGIVE YOU?

HOW CAN I FORGET YOU?

SHE SCREAMS OUT MY NAME FOR FORGIVENESS

NO FORGIVENESS, NO REMORSE

SHE SCREAMS OUT MY NAME FOR FORGIVENESS

SHE’S SO EMPTY, ALONE WITH HER SADNESS

MY LOVE FOR YOU IS NO LONGER

MY HEART IS GROWING STRONGER AND STRONGER

 BREATHING FIRE, BREATHING LIFE

A HUNDRED CANNONS SCREAMING

AS LIGHTNING BATTLES THUNDER

THE WARNING CRIES FROM THOSE AHEAD

I WILL PUSH THEM ASIDE TO REACH YOU

WITH EVERY BREATH I TAKE

AS I FACE EACH DAY

I MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF

I WILL LAY YOU TO REST

COLD

UNRELENTING INTENTIONS

AND THEY SOUND THE HORNS

AND THEY WARN THOSE AHEAD

I SHOUT FOR YOUR BLOOD

I SHOUT FOR YOUR DEATH

I AM NOT HERE TO WORSHIP

I AM NOT HERE TO PLEASE

I AM BREATHING FIRE

I AM BREATHING LIFE

THE BLACK, THE BLOODY, THE DEAD AND DYING

AND ALL THOSE TOO WEAK

ARE BACK THERE LYING IN THE DIRT WITH THE ROTTING SHEEP

TO WALK AWAY

I CLENCH MY FIST

I MADE A PROMISE TO MYSELF

I WILL LAY YOU TO REST

BREATHING FIRE, BREATHING LIFE

COLD

UNRELENTING INTENTIONS

I SHOUT FOR YOUR BLOOD

I SHOUT FOR YOUR DEATH

MARK MY WORDS

YOUR DAYS ARE COMING TO AN END

BOUND FOR GLORY

SWEEP THE CHAPEL CLEAN OF DUST FROM OUR BONES

OR WHEN THE GODS HAVE BEEN SATISIFIED

ONLY THEN WILL WE SURRENDER

NO SURRENDER AND NO REMORSE

THE BATTLEFIELD IS A CRY OF AGONY

YOUR PRAYERS ARE MUCH MORE SINCERE

BUT WHICH SO MANY GO UNANSWERED

TO THE HEAVENS WE ARE BOUND FOR GLORY

SHARPENED SWORDS AND SHOUTS OF HATRED

FALLEN ARROWS AND CRIES OF AGONY

WORSHIP YOUR GODS AS WE RAGE FOR FREEDOM

NO SURRENDER AND NO REMORSE

VIOLENCE WILL MAKE A WARRIOR HONEST

AND DISCOVER TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCE

ALL OUR BATTLES ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN

EACH ONE LEAVING SCARS IN OUR HEARTS

LEAVE ALL YOUR FEARS BEHIND

EACH TEAR FALLEN IS FROM YOUR FAMILIES’ EYES

FOR VICTORY, FOR HONOUR, FOR GLORY

WITH PRIDE

WE RAISE OUR FISTS

THERE IS NO TURNING BACK

WE WILL NOT SURRENDER

MEN WILL SUFFER AND MEN WILL BLEED

AN ARMY OF FREEDOM, AN ARMY OF WAR

THIS IS OUR STAND SHOW NO REMORSE

WE WILL LIVE AND THEY WILL DIE

FOR VICTORY, FOR HONOUR, FOR GLORY

THIS IS A DAY OF DEVASTATION

IT SHALL BE OURS

THIS DAY IS OURS

Metal band's name geared for war

Metal loves its war imagery, and I have to be honest - I love metal for it.

So you can imagine how awesome I find it that Windsor metalcore bandAquila derived their name from the military standard that the Romanlegions carried into battle.

The aquila: the emperor's eagle.Sculpted in gold with wings unfurled in triumph, held high on a staff to lead soldier companies on the march. A symbol of conquest and honour.

Aspart of the impressive new wave of Windsor metal bands, Aquila seem totake a similar attitude with their eagle, incorporating it in theirlogo and stamping it on the two killer demo discs they're released sofar.

"We were going to call ourselves Phalanx, but then we foundout too many bands have that name," says Aquila drummer Matt McGuire,23.

McGuire says the band was inspired to use a name with anancient combat theme because of their habitual playing of a computerstrategy game called Medieval Total War. They settled on "aquila" forits uniqueness and historic meaning.

"It's brutal. It's heavy," McGuire says. "Most people don't know what it means. They think it has something to do with tequila."

Thoseunfamiliar with Aquila's deadly combination of nimble fretwork, powerful riffs and screamed vocals can get an earful this weekend atthe Chubby Pickle. Join the audience and you might even be captured onvideo for posterity: the band will be recording their performance forlater release on DVD.

And if you're a fan of aggressive sounds, you need to check out Aquila's demos now. They've been earning raves inonline metal mags for their catchy, genre-straddling tracks, wieldingequal parts death, thrash and hardcore.

As we speak, Aquilamembers Mark Arruda, Anthony Rimac, Matt Shelsonne, Chase Bryant andMcGuire have entrenched in Windsor metal guru Glen Fricker's SpectreSound studio. Under construction is Aquila's debut full-fledged10-track album.

McGuire says the quintet's latest material takestheir sound on their demos to a new level for the band: faster, morecomplex, but still as accessible as rock 'n' roll. "We're not leavingour sounds, we're just coming up with new ones, stronger ones."

Bythe way, did you know you can make an approximation of the aquila bycrossing your palms over your chest with stiffened fingers and crookinga thumb to form a beaked eagle's head? Isn't that awesome? I thinkthat's awesome.

Aquila play Saturday night at the Chubby Pickle,762 Ouellette Ave. Doors open 9 p.m., $5 cover, 19+. Also featuringShot Down Stars, Terror-horse and SledgeHammer. Raise the legion atwww.myspace.com/aquilametal.

if you check out Windsor Social's December issue of 08, Aquila is the music feature of the month.

by:  Mary-Helen Cark-Mckinnon

After rocking the Chubby Pickle on Halloween night, Windsor's newest metal powerhouse Aquila took to the stage at the Coach and Horses on November 14.

The five-piece band played a set alongside Bloodshoteye, Starring Janet Leigh and Glasgow Grin.  Aquila blends the intense guitar work from Matt Shelsonne and the nearly deafening bass from Chase Bryant and Matt McGuire to compliment Marc Arruda's melodic screams perfectly.  The result is a metal song that will make you feel angry, happy and haveeven the most uptight music fan pumping their fist in the air:  Aquila's boiterous fans moshed and sometimes provided back up vocals.

Windsor's metal scene has long been an underground force, but thanks to bands like Aquila, it's slowly resurging to the forefront of the local scene.

The five memebers of the fairly new band made their offical debut in January 2008, taking the Windsor scene by storm.  After spending some time discovering the "filthy side of the music business"  earlier this year, the band has teamed with Glen Fricker of Spectre Sound entertainment to record their debut full length CD; one that promises a "face punching listening experience."

Aquila will be touring across Quebec and Ontario in support of the album.  One can only assume they'll leave a trail of kicked-in heads and broken glass in their wake, as they reintroduce each city to a truly heavy metal performance.

Aquila will be peforming at the Embassy Hotel on December 5th alongside Dismata, Bloodshoteye, Den and Waking Without Remorse.  (Windsor:  The Chubby Pickle on January 19th with Sladgehammer, Shot Down Stars and Terrorhorse.)

More information on Aquila can be found online at www.myspace.com/aquilametal

Aquila - Demo II
(Independent)

Goddamn it Aquila! You just had to do it again didn't you? You just had to tease me with another brutal meldo-death entry that's only four fucking tracks long! Aptly titled "Demo II" this EP is pretty much a continuation of "Demo I" (?) with its intense Melodic Death Metal guitar influences (like a better Zonaria), brutal death and blackened vocals (almost like Graveworm but not quite as great), and blistering drum work (if the Black Dahlia Murder had an apprentice, these guys would be it). The only exceptions are that the sound is a bit more polished overall and the vocalist's death vocals are less scratchy sounding and he almost completely did away with the blackened vocals. What I'd like to hear in a later release are some tighter riffs and maybe a clean vocal break during a chorus just to break up the possibility of monotony. Other than that, it's the same awesome band doing their same awesome thing. Two thumbs way the fuck up! Now let's just see them put out a full length album… oh what's that? They are? When? They start recording in February 2009? Hooray! :) -CS
