IDOL BACK- UP TAKES CENTE R STAGE ALONG SIDE BOTTI , STING , AND MORE! Renowned Vocalist Sy Smith Appears As Special Guest with Chris Botti & Boston Pops
Many die- hard music fans are familiar with her voice , but only a few can put a face to the name of Sy Smith . A back- up singe r with the. . American Idol orchestra for 4 seasons under the direction of Rickey Minor, Sy Smith has made a distinct sound all her own in the genre of music known as "underground soul" . Her third solo effort entitled "Conflict" ( Psyko! Records/ MDI Distribution) has been nominated for several awards (Soultracks' Album Of The Year, Southern Entertainment Award s R&B Indie Album Of The Year) . On this CD, she once again declares the need for music without machines - that is, music without the corporate giants that regulate the markets, determine radio playlists, and control what gets heard (and what doesn't) .
..On September 18 and 19, Sy Smith will appear as a special guest vocalist with Chris Botti as he tapes his music special for PBS (and eventually his soon-to-be-released DVD) . Other guests scheduled to appear include Sting, Josh Groban, Steven Tyler , Yo- Yo Ma and more surprise guests! Sy, who is no newcomer to the stage , comments on the planned event . "I love singing with Chris , it's almost been two years now. The last time Sting came to one of our shows he told me that he was glad he didn't have to sing after me! Can you imagine Sting saying that! ! ? ? To lil ole' me? ? ! ! ". .
As a touring vocalist with Chris Botti , Sy has become a favorite among his fans, wowing them with her soulful yet whimsical vocals, her impressive 5 octave range, and her stunning gowns and dresses. "My stylist, Hollis, always finds the greatest dresses for me to wear. It's so cool having a wonderful stylist who is also one of your best friends! " Sy mentions as she waits for the flight to Boston.
Sy Smith solidified her place in the genre known as under ground soul (or indie-soul) with her 2005 critically-acclaimed debut "The Syberspace Social" (named in the top ten CDs of 2005 by The Boston Globe , featured spotlight albums in Billboard Magazine) which features production from Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest, Lucy Pearl), James Poyser (Common, Lauryn Hill) and guest vocals from Anthony Hamilton. She gained further popularity with her 2007 release "Psykosoul Plus" displaying her expertise at arranging and songwriting. Sy's live DVD "Worship At The Temple" (2007 Bel-Herald Pictures) presents her prowess on stage and easy-going nature off stage .
Her voice is well-known as not only one of the three backing vocalists on American Idol for the past four seasons, but also for her duet with Al Green on the popular TV series "Soul Food", her role as Aisha on the THQ video game "Saint's Row" (she was Aisha's singing and speaking voice ) and several nation-wide jingles. As an Emmy-nominated song writer, she has written for many other artists including Carlos Santana, Macy Gray and Me'shell N'degeocello.
Among other performances planned for this fall/winter season, Sy will also appear with The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra plans to feature Sy in their December 2008 holiday concert series.

A Bill of Rights for Songwriters and Composers Created by ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and PublishersYou may have already seen or signed this, but if you haven't, and you are a songwriter or composer, take a minute to read this and hit the link below to go to ASCAP and sign this bill. Just as citizens of a nation must be educated about their rights to ensure that they are protected and upheld, so too must those who compose words and music know the rights that support their own acts of creation. Without these rights, which directly emanate from the U.S. Constitution, many who dream of focusing their talents and energies on music creation would be economically unable to do so - an outcome that would diminish artistic expression today and for future generations. At this time, when so many forces are seeking to diminish copyright protections and devalue artistic expression, this Bill of Rights for Songwriters and Composers looks to clarify the entitlements that every music creator enjoys. We have the right to be compensated for the use of our creative works, and share in the revenues that they generate.
We have the right to license our works and control the ways in which they are used.
We have the right to withhold permission for uses of our works on artistic, economic or philosophical grounds.
We have the right to protect our creative works to the fullest extent of the law from all forms of piracy, theft and unauthorized use, which deprive us of our right to earn a living based on our creativity.
We have the right to choose when and where our creative works may be used for free.
We have the right to develop, document and distribute our works through new media channels - while retaining the right to a share in all associated profits.
We have the right to choose the organizations we want to represent us and to join our voices together to protect our rights and negotiate for the value of our music.
We have the right to earn compensation from all types of "performances," including direct, live renditions as well as indirect recordings, broadcasts, digital streams and more.
We have the right to decline participation in business models that require us to relinquish all or part of our creative rights - or which do not respect our right to be compensated for our work.
We have the right to advocate for strong laws protecting our creative works, and demand that our government vigorously uphold and protect our rights.Make Your Voice Heard! Add YOUR name to the Bill of Rights now!

BB KINGS UNIVERSAL BREACHES CONTRACT WITH ARTIST SY SMITH Coming into 2008, I was proud to see the advancement of Independent Artist in the industry and the impact that this select group of people have on the music industry as a whole. With grammy nominations, CD sales, music video channels, Billboard charts, and internet digital content sites all reflecting the impact that indie artists have on the entertainment industry, I think it is fair to say that the music industry has been forced to make some changes, and respectfully take a serious look at the independent artist.
This change in the industry’s climate obviously has had an effect on the club scene straight across the board. There are more venues benefiting on their door from appearances by indie artist from the open mike nights to artists that have a large following placing them in the "headliner" category, and these are artists without major label deals or label support.
Sy Smith is one such artist. Having climbed the indie artist ladder pretty much single handedly, Sy Smith has become a popular beauty and contender among female indie artist across the country, and is a sought after headliner for venues in Los Angeles and other major cities looking to increase their door or audience attendance and her fan base is international. That’s not to say that there are not those venues that are true Sy Smith and indie artists supporters. Most venues currently support the indie artist scene and promoters are fair in their payment policies and contractual obligations... well at least I thought this was the case until a recent performance at BB Kings Restaurant and Night Club in Universal City became my first nightmare of 2008.
In an incredible non stop performance by Sy Smith and Deez Nut’s for one and a half hours straight at BB Kings, Ms. Smith performed her popular Go-Go show for a crowd that was so entertained, her fans and supporters never left the floor during the performance. Sy Smith had been asked to perform at BB Kings for a solid year (I can attest to that as I see the booking inquiries that come in on a daily basis). Upon finally agreeing to perform her Go-Go show, and fulfilling her agreement as an artist, the payment ball has been bouncing around Universal City since her performance.
After countless attempts to rectify the problem, and graciously extending every available opportunity to the parties involved (Cool Out Promo), this entertaining event still remains and unpaid venture. Oddly enough, it is a fact that several other payments that were also bouncing around, have been reissued to predominately male parties. I stress "male" parties, because it is no secret that females continue to be treated differently in many areas of the entertainment industry and not given the same respect when it comes to representation, particularly in financial matters that require a female to collect or enforce payment. It is assumed that we are powerless when it comes to "muscle" and that our sensitivities will keep us in line. Then, when you come hard as a female, the notorious "B" word becomes the primary ammunition deployed as a defensive measure in a counter attack.
Well, some of these things may have been true in the past, but when you’re dealing with women who have a plethora of strong networks and capabilities, you may not want to lump them into a stereotype. Sy Smith and Pattie Howard together more than likely have more industry contacts than the average independent artist and have participated beyond their musical skills in more industry related projects than one would imagine. They are not prone to the "B" word attitude and are committed to the use of intelligence, experience, and common sense in business ethics, but don’t take their kindness for weakness.
Pattie Howard is a veteran singer, song writer, producer, recording artist, Grammy nominee and Sy Smith bolsters the same credits with additional nominations as a songwriter (Emmy) and recording artist (Grammy). Ms. Smith is the youngest member of the Recording Academy Board of Governors (NARAS), the familiar voice of the Soul Food intro with Al Green, writer of the title soundtrack for the film Havana Nights performed by Mya, has several songs in the film "Deliver Us From Eva, featured vocalist with Grammy nominee Meshell N’Degeo Cello, Modern Groove Assembly, Chris Botti, and this is the short list. They both have performed with the likes of Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson... I could go on but just read the bio’s. This is not a duo you would want to mess with.
It is unfortunate that people do not do their homework before making certain decisions and in this case, it may not fair well for D. Anthony and Cool Out Promo.
"It’s not just the money" says Pattie Howard who is also VP of Special Projects for a national distribution company that caters to the needs of independent artist, "it’s the money and the disrespect shown to the advertised performing headliner for the evening who without a doubt drew a paying audience for this show, and gave the audience a great hour and a half performance."
Sy Smith always brings it and her band, which featured Chante Carmel, Cassandra O’Neil, Ron Brunner, Tim Baily, Kat Dyson, Anthony DeTieggs (Big Tone), Kamassi Washington and Ryan Porter are some of the most sought after musicians in the city. "You never know what V.I.P’s are going to show up at Sy’s show, like the night Prince walked in to see her Go Go show at the Temple Bar, or when Rahsaan Patterson hit the stage with Sy. She just called out some chord changes and it was on!" There were V.I.P.’s at BB Kings from Warner and Hidden Beach in the audience and veteran producer Keith Crouch made a surprise appearance and graced the stage with Sy Smith. If you didn’t know, now you know... just check out The Syberspace Social CD. ’Nuff said.
