Things have been really busy this past few months, with teaching, traveling and playing gigs. I'm really happy with the way the new guitar etude book turned out. Mike Allemana did a fantastic job playing the etudes. Jazz Guitar Etudes (with Tab) is now available on my educational website.

By popular request, I've just completed a trumpet edition of my most popular book, Jazz Saxophone Etudes. I reworked the etudes so that they're idiomatically suited for trumpet. It was a fun challenge to take these familiar etudes, and revise them to work well on the trumpet. I'm happy with the results, and with the way that Mark Olen performed them. This new book, Jazz Trumpet Etudes will be available by January 2009, if not sooner.

I'm in Chicago for a couple of weeks to record my new beginning level etude book, and to play some gigs. I'll be heading back to Phoenix on October 18th. I'm looking forward to a new Tuesday and Wednesday night gig at Remington's in Scottsdale, Arizona, with my wife, the great pianist/signer Judy Roberts, and with the legendary Danny Long. Danny has the most incredible repertoire! It's truly an honor to play with his group.

The new etude book should be available in January 2009. Please check out my website www.gregfishmanjazzstudios.com for more announcements regarding new books.

Thank you to my many new online students who are taking e-mail lessons with me. I really enjoy teaching, and this new format lets me help people around the world without either one of us having to get on an airplane!

More news next month..... Thanks for reading my blog.

Hello,

This is my first attempt at a blog! I just thought I'd reflect on a few current items/events....

Jazz Saxophone Etudes, Volume 2

After a production delay at the printer's, I'm glad that this book is finally out. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. I wrote the entire book while in my gig in Bangkok this past May.

People often ask me how I write the books, and it depends on my mood and situation. Sometimes I write the pieces while playing the saxophone. Other times, I write them at the piano. Often, however, I simply sit at a desk with a pencil in hand and blank manuscript paper in front of me, and I try to tune in to the sound of a solo, and basically, it's like I'm transcribing from my own inner ear, if that makes any sense. It's almost like I'm trying to tune in a distant radio station with my mind, and when I lock on to the signal, my hand starts taking musical dictation. All except two of the pieces for the new book were written in this manner, and as a result, I feel that the book has a very pure melodic quality to it. I hope that everyone is enjoying the new book.

Jazz Cruise

November 3rd, I leave for Miami to play in Joe Segal's jazz cruise, the 7th Annual Jazz Party At Sea. Lots of great players, including my wife, the great singer/pianist, Judy Roberts, my musical parter Paulinho Garcia, the other half of Two For Brazil, plus Phil Woods, David Sanchez, Dick Hyman, and many other jazz greats. Should be a fun week.

Phoenix

Yes, it's true...I'm moving to Phoenix. I'll be there sometime during the first week of December. I'm looking forward to teaching jazz saxophone and playing lots of gigs, hanging out with close friends, and making new musical connections. However, I'm still keeping the Chicago connection alive, as well....My teaching studio in Evanston will remain open, and I'll be back periodically to teach lessons and play gigs with Two For Brazil.
