Current mood: disappointed
only for the record : i no longer support the so-called "featured artists coalition" a.k.a. FAC from the u.k. ( fyi : http://www.featuredartistscoalition.com ) & have also removed the lil' banner & link to their website on my profile's main page !
"why that ?" , u may ask now ... well ... they are obviously as utterly naive & also CLUELESS as lily allen & her supporters about certain important issues of today like file-sharing etc. ! *sigh* by now they've even sided with allen & co. concerning the so-called "3 strikes plan" ( see their statement , which was also signed by lily allen & patrick wolf besides many others here : "the air statement" - more "the HOT AIR statement" imho ! :-/ ) , which made their CLUELESSNESS totally obvious for me ! :-/
on top of that they've even rejected a friends request yesterday that i've sent out to them already some time ago , albeit i was still supportive of them until today ! :-o
i'm indeed VERY DISAPPOINTED about their lack of innovative ideas & knowledge about some rather important things in today's music biz , which they SHOULD indeed know by now , but obviously don't or won't ! *sigh*
enough of that now !

Current mood: energetic
it was the dear ol' shakespeare who once
wrote the immortal sentence "to be or not to be - THAT is the question
!" ... metaphysically speaking , it is indeed , but what is far more
important in your real & every day life is the question "to have or
not to have !"
so wherever u go & whatever u do , THIS is the question to really ponder about !
after 42 years of life on this planet i've come to the conclusion & realized without a doubt that
ALL - yes indeed ALL ! - problems are based on this question & on
the factor of GREED !
it's greed that controls the monetary system of which we are ALL - without ANY exception ! - slaves of !
in other words : even if we eliminate the monetary system as it is ,
there's still the greed left to cause problems after problems for all
of us - even for the filthy rich pigs !
so NOTHING on earth will really change for the better , if the human species doesn't learn how to get rid of GREED !
as much as u CAN'T win "the war against terror" , if u don't ( want )
or jus' can't understand , why terrorists become what they are after
all & as much as u CAN'T stop somebody from running amok, if u
don't ( want )
or jus' can't understand , why that person wants to do what he or she
is determined to do , u also CAN'T stop somebody - & especially not
masses of people ! - from wanting MORE , because they see / read / hear that others
have , what they want , but somehow can't get !
but if they have the means to get it , most of them will also use that means to get it !
that's the principle of GREED after all !
in other words : if something is made available - no matter , how or
where ! - some people will ALWAYS go & get it , because THEY CAN -
legally or illegally doesn't matter to them !
that's why file-sharing CAN'T be stopped nor drug use can be stopped
nor smoking can be stopped nor alcoholism can be stopped etc. & so
on until the the break of dawn ! *sigh*
remember what the prohibition has caused in the u.s.a. back in the 20s
& early 30s of the last century ? it actually spawned a whole new
industry of crooks like al capone & co. !
WHY ? because of GREED !
please try to realize this ... as it's a PARAMOUNT FACT that people
should indeed learn to understand , if they try to deal with the overwhelming
power of greed !
no matter how much & long u may talk to people & tell them "it's illegal
!" & wave your moral finger @ them , they'll ALWAYS ignore u , as
long as they can get what they want - one way or the other !
that's A PLAIN FACT OF LIFE - like it or not !
so to come back to the whole file-sharing debate of late , we've already established the FACT that it was the
invention of the mp3 format that made music available also FOR FREE !
it's "out there" since more than a decade to use FOR FREE & u jus' CAN'T take it back ,
so u HAVE TO deal with its consequences NOW , which is already late
enough ! *sigh*
what people also rarely , if ever seriously talk about is WHY things
like music files in mp3 format spread all across the globe via p2p
networks like the original napster & others !
it all started not only because the newly invented mp3 format was small enough to
transmit it quite fast via such portals , but basically also because certain
places like universities all around the world had fast broadband
connections ( t1 or even t3 ) to the net already a decade ago , while private users @
home had isdn @ best or jus' a slow dial-up modem connection ! :-o
this means that it were & still are LOADS of students @
universities , who use(d) those new technologies 1st & to the max. FOR YEARS before the average joe or anna had such fast connections also
@ their homes !
can u really blame all those students for using the net not only for
research , but also for file-sharing via p2p networks , when they were
music fans , which most of them were - worldwide !?
go ahead & tell me that u - lily allen & co. or whoever else -
really want to blame all those MILLIONS of students ( quite a lot of
them were even law students , who would later become - or are by now
- lawyers or judges ! ;-o ) for doing "something so illegal" , which MOST people with lil' money , but fast i-net connections have done too ( PLEASE DON'T LIE to me & try to tell me that u haven't ) !
WAKE UP & GET REAL , folx !
after all , it's nothing but your very own GREED that has caused the
problems we are facing now & actually already since about decades !
:-/
the ruthless misuse of the monetary system to increase personal profits
of a few to astronomically high levels of BILLIONS of dollars , euros
or pounds etc. that finally caused the big financial crisis a year ago
only proves WITHOUT A DOUBT , what people are doing wrong in general & worldwide !
they've let their own greed take total control over their lives &
- as a very dangerous effect ! - also over the lives of millions or even
billions of other people , who they've never met nor will ever know !
can THIS be right in any way ?
NOT for me - NEVER EVER !
that's why the way we make use of the monetary system MUST CHANGE
drastically & dramatically to maybe still try to stop this monster
called GREED & THEN learn how to find indeed new ways in life - for
ALL of us !
if we - the people in general - are not able or willing to change that
system ( of steadily increasing greed ) , then we are indeed doomed to
extinction ... & rightly so !
overpopulation will run its course too & make this HUGE problem even bigger every day ...
we can actually see it growing right in front of our very own eyes , if we really look closely to what WE have caused there !
so as long as people won't feel GUILTY OF GREED , they WON'T change a thing @ all - plain fact ... @ least for me by now ! *deep_sigh*
if we can make them feel this guilt EVERY DAY , there might still be a
wee chance to stop this utterly wrong way of "evolution" & return
to A MUCH HEALTHIER society of people , who REALLY care - not only for
themselves , but for each other !
are we actually capable to make this change ?
ask this to yourself 1st , before u try to blame ANYBODY ELSE , fellows !

Current mood: determined
i usually don't post anything else here in my blog than announcements for & playlists of my own radio shows anymore , but by now i think that it's really NECESSARY to speak up again & let y' all know my indeed honest opinion about the current & ongoing debate about file-sharing , the state of the music industry in general & the artists - fans relationship in specific !
only fyi & to make this clear once & for all already in the beginning : i fully support the stance of the so-called "featured artists coalition" - also concerning file-sharing etc. ! btw : already since the coalition was founded i have a lil' banner on my profile site , because i seriously think that they "do the right thing" - for the involved artists as much as for their fans !
read about the stance of the FAC concerning file-sharing here & here , please ! i can also only recommend that u read the following great article in the guardian by charlie brooker : What links Lord Mandelson, Damien Hirst & the music industry?
after that u should read the stance of lily allen in her myspace blog & patrick wolf's stance about this indeed "hot topic" in his myspace blog too , fellows !
a great music producer - guy sigsworth - & i have discussed the whole thing jus' yesterday @ twitter , which was really interesting & i think that we both have indeed learned something from it , as guy also backs up lily's & patrick's stance , while i back up the stance of the FAC !
so WHY do i actually think that the FAC is right with what they say & also do & lily , patrick & - to a certain extend - also guy is wrong , when they speak up against file-sharing so vehemently !? 1st of all , we have to clearly seperate personal opinion from plain facts in this case ! FACT is the following , which most people usually & all too easily forget , when they discuss this indeed still "hot topic" : file-sharing was made possible because of the invention of the mp3 format , which goes back to a scientific research program @ the german fraunhofer institute in the early 80s already ! btw : the development of the mp3 format was also financed by some rather wealthy industry giants & media co.s ! it's an all too common misconception that the mp3 format was once invented by some "pirates" for p2p networks like the original napster portal ! that's jus' NOT TRUE ! so file-sharing was ONLY made possible because of the mp3 format , which could be easily shared via the i-net & such portals like the original napster etc. ! the wav format was simply too big to be used for file-sharing back then - a decade ago - as the whole phenomenon has started ! as quite often with such new inventions , the industry , which even financed the development , had no real clue what to do with it later on & indeed it took the music industry more than 2 decades ( ! ) to finally realize the ( dangerous ? ) potential of the mp3 format ! by that time others - incl. loads of genuine music fans - had discovered & used that potential to its full effect - simply because THEY CAN ! while the giant a.k.a. the music industry was still asleep , file-sharing has already spread worldwide through the whole internet !
one thing that neither the music industry nor artists like lily allen & patrick wolf seem to realize is that THEY CAN'T TURN BACK THE CLOCK to the "good ol' times" of rec. shops , where u could buy your vinyl copy of the latest albums & singles that were released ! as nice & sometimes even really wonderful that great experience was , it was an experience of THE PAST ! cd almost killed the vinyl & mp3 definitely killed the cd by now - plain fact ! it CAN'T BE REVERTED to what was back in the days ! the cd single is already a dead format ! who really buys cd singles , if u can LEGALLY download the songs that u like on such singles usually much cheaper online !? the production of cd singles these days is actually one of the most ridiculous anachronisms of our oh so "modern" world ! albums are a different thing , but people like to "cherry pick" , of course , as they only want to buy online , what they really like & nothing more - also for a usually much better price than on a physical format - i.e. a cd or vinyl ! in times of i-tunes , i-pods , i-phones etc. especially the youth of today is usually more than happy with an mp3 file in 320 or even less kbps "quality" , because their headphones or stereos ( if they actually have one & not jus' some crappy computer speakers ) simply don't let them notice the difference of a good quality mp3 file & a cd or a vinyl copy ! so they 1st start to look around the net for new releases by their favorite artists & if they only find some even less than one minute long mp3 snippets on myspace or wherever else , they simply look further - no matter where ! - until they find , what they are looking for : the full songs in @ least acceptable sound quality ! can u really blame an underage person or a young student for that - actually quite logical - behaviour ? I WON'T & can't , sorry !
after all , the HUGE failure was & still is that the music industry in general has MISSED the great opportunity to make use of the mp3 format BEFORE file-sharing has started & became that (in)famous ! now they can only run after p2p network users & try to sue them with sometimes extremely heavy-handed measures ! this only causes a BIG rift between the music producers & distributers on the one side & the ( @ least potential ) consumers on the other side !
it's also quite "funny" somehow that right now young artists like lily allen & patrick wolf want to stop file-sharing ... or why do they write such blog entries these days ? on the other hand much older artists like billy bragg , nick mason etc. of the FAC seem to have finally realized that the music industry as we knew - & maybe even loved it somehow - is DEAD ! they've realized - unlike lily & patrick - that the ol' giant is nothing but an already brain-dead ZOMBIE , who still refuses to die ! IT MUST DIE NOW ! yes , u read that right : the music industry as we knew it from the "good ol' days" MUST DIE NOW - to finally make way for a new form of distribution & ART !
to bring the ART back into the music biz , its former "industry" has to vanish COMPLETELY, as its nothing but a blood-sucking zombie these days , who exploits artists as much as their fans - i.e. the consumers !
it actually really baffles me that some artists & people in the industry still whine & complain about file-sharing these days - but on the other hand DON'T ( or WON'T ? ) realize that file-sharing is ONLY a logical consequence after the invention of the mp3 format & the lack of interest in a profitable way of distribution by the industry & also the artists & music producers back in the 90s ! WAKE UP , fellows ! the "good ol' days" of vinyl albums & single releases are LONG OVER now ! only a few small niches are profitable for that kind of releases , but NOT the big market ! it's indeed so silly to try to get it back now , because it's a dead end street or a roundabout without aim ! instead of it new artists - incl. lily & patrick - should look for NEW WAYS to distribute their music & try to (re)establish a ( better ) connection to the consumers & fans of their music !
here are some indeed serious suggestions , what new(er) artists like them could do :
put your full album in your myspace music players , so that all people , who want to listen to it can do it ! do a "robo voice-over" for each song several times , so that it makes no sense to rec. the songs off the myspace music players ! sure it's a bit annoying to hear "this is a song by ( name of the artist ) from his / her new album ( title of the album ) on myspace !" every minute , but still much better than ridiculously short song snippets instead !
release no singles anymore , but instead of it make the radio edits ,which are usually a minute or so shorter than the original album version , available for free as a download to all your fans & not jus' to some big radio networks , of the songs that u think are "hits" or potential single releases !
if u still want to release singles , only release 7" vinyl - maybe even as picture discs & give everyone , who purchases it a link to download all the songs on such a release in high quality mp3 format , so the 7" vinyl becomes a collectors item ( even @ a higher price than a usual cd single ;-) & people can listen to the mp3s without even having a rec. player maybe ! ;-) fans & collectors will still be happy - if they get the high quality mp3s for free then ! :-)
when u release albums , think of the art & release it as double 12" vinyl with gatefold sleeves ! do the same as with the 7" vinyl single releases : free mp3s in high quality for all , who purchases a copy ! limited editions can incl. picture discs , posters , an extra booklet with all the lyrics in it & so on ! :-) if the price is right & not astronomically high , then fans & collectors will be really happy again ! :-)
there are soOo many more interesting options to think of , but one thing is for sure : "times they are a changing !" & what once was a successful business model is by now no longer effective & MUST BE CHANGED ! if u still refuse to realize this , the rift between "us & them" ( artists & fans ) will only get bigger & bigger with each passing day of whining & complaining about the oh so "good ol' times" !
START THE CHANGE NOW , fellows , as it's NOT too late for it , but a change also means A REAL CHANGE & not jus' putting a shiny new veneer on a broken ol' cupboard to try to make it look better again , okay !?
update ( 1 ) ...
here's what matt bellamy of muse had to say about
file-sharing etc. ...
"My current opinion is that file sharing is now the
norm. This cannot be changed without an attack on perceived civil liberties
which will never go down well. The problem is that the ISPs making the extreme
profits (due to millions of broadband subscriptions) are not being taxed by the
copyright owners correctly and this is a legislation issue. Radio stations and
TV stations etc have to pay the copyright owners (both recording and publishing)
a fee for using material they do not own. ISPs should have to pay in the same
way with a collection agency like PRS doing the monitoring and calculations
based on encoded (but freely downloaded) data. Broadband makes the internet
essentially the new broadcaster. This is the point which is being
missed.
Also, usage should have a value. Someone who just checks email
uses minimal bandwidth, but someone who downloads 1 gig per day uses way more,
but at the moment they pay the same. It is clear which user is hitting the
creative industries and it is clear which user is not, so for this reason, usage
should also be priced accordingly. The end result will be a taxed, monitored ISP
based on usage which will ensure both the freedom of the consumer and the rights
of the artists - the loser will be the ISP who will probably have to increase
subscription costs to compensate, but the user will have the freedom to choose
between checking a few emails (which will cost far less than a current monthly
subscription) and downloading tons of music and film (which will cost probably a
bit more than current subscription, but not that much more).
We should
set up a meeting with Lord Mandelson as he is on this issue at the moment, I'm
sure he would meet us for breakfast!"
... & here's my reply to it via
lily allen's latest blog entry ...
albeit i really like what matt bellamy of muse had to
say about file-sharing , he misses one indeed very crucial point : LEGAL
downloads ! fyi : i - like many others too - LEGALLY download quite a lot of
music via amazon.de ( i loathe i-tunes ! ) & most likely reach the 1 gb mark
very easily almost every month - like people do , who mostly download a lot of
stuff ILLEGAL too ! :-o it CAN'T be fair nor acceptable that people , who
download stuff LEGALLY have to pay more to actually use the net in general -
because others use it for illegal purposes ! :-/ so as u can see from this
example , it's all a lot trickier than the great majority of people still may
think - also right now !
update ( 2 ... & most likely final )
by now it became more than obvious to me that lily allen & co. still like to feed the dinosaurs ( big rec. co. bosses & their ilk ) in "jurassic park" ( a.k.a. the music industry or biz in general ) for some time to come , instead of seriously thinking about new ways to distribute their music etc. ! *sigh*
if they REALLY want it that way , i'll let them fail ... & will only *lol* @ them , when it's all over - most likely sooner than later - , sorry ( no , not really , as they COULD know better , if they would actually take note , which they seem to refuse for what silly reasons soever ! :-/ )
please read the following great articles on the music biz in general , fellows , as they really speak for itself & explain A LOT , if not even almost everything that u really need to know about this matter !
---
p. s. : i may edit this blog entry again later on or add something new to it , if i think that it's necessary , but i'll mark all significant edits & changes , so that u can see , what's new then ! ;-)
