Sara Routh
The Cat Club
West Hollywood

Contact: Hotline, 917-582-4291; songbrd123@hotmail.com

Web:  www.sararouth.com; MySpace.com/lasongbird

The Players: Sara Routh, acoustic guitar, vocals; Keith Tanenbaum, drums.

Material: Sara Routh is an acoustic alt-rocker somewhere between Grace Slick and Melissa Ether-idge, whose music could easily transition into a full rock band sound. She presents sincere songs in a variety of genres, from the AAA style of "Rollaway" to the ska sounds of "Drinking with the Devil." Her topics range from a song about the city of Los Angeles to a stripper named Rosemary at "Crazy Girls." One of her songs has even found its way onto the Sounds of Superman CD.

Musicianship: Routh is a virtuoso on guitar, and truly shines on "Hills of Gold" with its unique finger picking.  She possesses powerful pipes and an emotional voice. She draws the listener in and makes them care about the songs. Tanenbaum's drums are laid-back, and never overpower Routh's guitar or vocals. Routh's arrangement of "Rosemary" was particularly innovative.

Performance: A true natural performer, Routh literally had the audience in the palm of her hands, both during her songs and through-out her set. She segued beautifully between a plug for the bartender and a song about drinking and the devil. Routh was quick-witted, cleverly disguising her tuning problems, while dishing out stories and hooks that kept the audience involved. However, it was her music that set her apart, as she wailed like a true rock star.  Not only did the audience ask for and receive an encore performance of "Now or Never," but Routh even sang her goodbyes and post-performance plugs.

Summary: Sara Routh has burst upon the L.A. music scene with a fresh new sound that is ready for meatier arrangements. She has created a great base for her music and it deserves the full band treatment. Her songs are radio friendly and her live show will be the topic of conversation for some time to come.

The Glass Plastiks
The Mint
Los Angeles

The Players: Trevor Lissauer, vo-cals, guitar, piano; Jack Gue, lead guitar; Keith Tenenbaum, drums.

Material: Highly regarded singer/ songwriter Trevor Lissauer has gone electric with a full band for this project and pulls it off with his new band, the Glass Plastiks. The songs are pure pleasure with beautiful vocals, gritty observations, and a Neil Young influenced alt-rock attack that keeps the music interesting. In fact, the tunes seem like more fleshed-out rock-ed-up versions of Lissauer's acoustic material.

Musicianship: The musicianship is top notch in this outfit. The only flaw is that, at this gig, Lissauer spent an inordinate amount of time tuning. Once past that, though, the songs cascaded smoothly. There's a tight chemistry among the players, and that contributes nicely to the subtleties in the material. Gue and Tenenbaum know when to lay back and when to kick it up. Lissauer, meanwhile, alternates bet-ween guitar and piano. In fact, his time behind the keys seems most natural. That's when he lights up and comes alive, at least at this show.

1)The Dirty Royals Obsessed America

Buy it from InSound Get this on iTunes

Brit-pop with sexy swagger, Obsessed America is an album written by a group of fellas who startedthis band in the ashes of indie pop-rock outfit The Samurai Seven who John Peel had called one of his favorite all-time bands. The Dirty Royals sway with melodic crooning, manic power chords, andpunked up drumming. Lyrically the EP is filled with personal notes and socially conscious banter; The Dirty Royals write melodic alternative Brit-pop with punk rock noodlings in its midst. Nice.

Trevor Lissauers fellow band members are quick to point out that the front man for the Glass Plastiks has some rather compulsive tendencies when it comes to his art.

There are some people who are born an artist, said bassist Barry Whittaker, and Trevor is one of them. Musically, he can really emulate anything hes interested in, hell listen to it and pick out all the best parts. Hes very versatile, very layered. And a little obsessive.

But its that focus and drive, which is ultimately shared by every member of the melodic progressive pop-rock group, that has made the Glass Plastiks one of the most sought-after bands in Los Angeles. The group has played gigs at the hot L.A. club The Knitting Factory, Johnny Depps famed Viper Room and other sought-after city spots.

They recently played the multi-faceted arts fest South by Southwest in Austin, the hometown of both Lissauer and Whittaker, although they didnt meet until both had arrived in L.A.

The bands songs, from the CD Transit Plaza can be heard on soundtracks for Party of Five, Nip/Tuck as well as the upcoming movie Right At Your Door.  College radio and Internet exposure have given them additional airplay.

Next month, the Glass Plastiks will play Danville, reuniting Lissauer with North Theatre executive director Jerry Meadors, who wrote and produced the 2003 movie Edens Curve, in which Lissauer starred. Lissauer has also had acting roles on numerous projects including the 1993 cult movie The Skateboard Kid and two seasons in the role of Miles on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

The concert, Rock at the North,  is a chance for Danville fans to hear the bands progress, which they call an evolution of sorts as the four have seen their ideas meld, merging together into a sound that moves away from previous acoustic material, adding a little electricity to their moody, idea-laced mix.

Featuring Lissauer, Whittaker, drummer Keith Tenenbaum and the newest member, lead guitarist Jack Gue, the Glass Plastiks are hard at work on a new CD, a project theyve about halfway completed.

This album is going to be, to me, far beyond the limits of what weve done before, said Tenenbaum. Its a collaboration of everybody in the band. This is the first album all four of us will be putting out together. For me, its going to be the masterpiece of the last six years.

There are a lot more dynamics to the songs, added Whittaker of the richly textured, layered collection of tunes. Its a much more mature musical piece at this point. It weaves together in a much richer way.

The music is also becoming more electric, the sound is evolving to more of an alternative rock and roll, said Lissauer, who taught himself guitar at age 14 and has since been what his bandmates call a prolific songwriter. He funds much of the bands projects through acting gigs, such as his most recent, on the Comedy Central show Reno 911.

And although band members compare their relationship to the tumultuous, twisted ones in the movie Fight Club, its really more of a love fest for the Glass Plastiks, who dont look to the L.A. music scene for inspiration, but to each other instead.

The guys I play with inspire me, said Tenenbaum, the only L.A. native in the bunch. (Gue is from Missouri). Theres such a tense air in the clubs. Its a cutthroat city.

Members of the Plastiks share a love of music and each other that has made it easier for them to rise above the competition and find their own levels of success with moody, folk-laced rock that recalls Beatles ballads and has earned more than one critical comparison to Elliott Smith.

Were like brothers. We all care about each other and there isnt any ego that gets in the way, said Tenenbaum. We have a very good friendship outside the music. And Jack fits in like a puzzle piece.

That connection gives the bands creative process a seamlessness of sorts thats working well on the Plastiks latest CD.

Trevor will bring in an idea, strumming the rhythm guitar part, and Barry and I will take it and come up with a melody. Then Jack will put in his textures, said Tenenbaum.

Were excited about it, added Whittaker. Its completely different, the approach is a world apart from what weve done before, but yet, the essence is very much the same.

The Glass Plastiks will headline Rock at the North, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. July 1 at the North Theatre, 629 North Main St.

Also performing will be the regionally-based bands The Strugglers (just back from a European tour), Rathskeller and the Young Sinclairs.

Tickets are $15 and are available at the Heartline Restaurant, 1817 Riverside Drive; The Music Post, 1085 Piney Forest Road; and the North Theatre box office from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

The Dirty Royals The Dirty Royals

'God Save The Queen ... Please!!'

Contrary to popular mythology, the cheeky moniker adopted by the British-U.S. hybrid band The Dirty Royals has nothing to do with the bathing habits of Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles.

In fact, fans who are fast catching on to the foursome's brilliant three part harmonies and West Coast meets UK, punk royalty dirtying it up with straight ahead rock vibe described by one tastemaker as The Buzzcocks meet the Beach Boys may also be surprised to realize that dirty in the U.K. has more to it then just sex.

The edgy yet cool, powerful yet ultra-danceable sounds created by Oxford born and bred brothers Simon (lead vocals, lead guitar) and Matt Williams (rhythm guitar, vocals), Jimmy Martin (bass, vocals) and L.A. drummer Keith Tenenbaum are a better fit for the modern Brit interpretation of the wordthat is, irreverent, down and dirty, the way rock used to be before a corporate, cookie cutter mentality stormed the music business.

We've always liked band names with contradictions, or which juxtapose two ideas which at first seem opposite like sweet vocals and dirty guitars says Matt. Rock and roll by nature is down and dirty, insolent when it's engaging in full freedom of expression. It's also the name of a cocktail.

Launching a career with a five song EP may seem like a modest way to encourage a post-millennial British invasion, but the five tracks on Obsessed America may be the most intense, happy, raging and soulful 17 minutes in indie rock history. The album coverfeaturing four Royal Guardsmen standing before an image of the American flagand title might invoke the idea of a full-on political statement, but actually, the songs vary between social consciousness and very personal storytelling.

Chatting recently with both Simon and Matt Williams, and mentioning that when a band comes with a John Peel quote attached (as they do!) stating that they were one of his all-time favorite bands, I first wondered if there could be any better launch pad?! "John was a real legend and a true champion of innovative and exciting music. It was, and continues to be, a huge thrill for us that he loved our music so much. We ended up recording 5 sessions for his BBC radio show - in the same studios where everyone from Bing Crosby, through The Beatles to Coldplay have recorded. John really went above and beyond the call of duty to support us and we are enormously grateful to him. Like everyone, we miss him very much."

For the Average Joe who may not have heard of you and was thinking of buying your upcoming 'Obsessed America' EP, how would you yourself describe your sound? "The sound of the Beach Boys getting beaten up at a Dead Kennedys concert."

Your EP title 'Obsessed America' is an interesting choice, but perhaps it originates from a more personal standpoint for you? "Having spent last summer in California, Obsessed America worked for us on a number of levels; personally, lyrically and politically. We love America but are increasingly peturbed by the fact that the media in America are obsessed with only American issues and often the most trivial. Should we really care where Paris Hilton last went to the bathroom, when there are bigger issues in the world?"

"The rest of the world - Britain in particular - is also obsessed with America. But rather than taking all the things that actually make America the fantastic country it is, the world apes the worst excesses. Fast food, disregard for the environment and an unhealthy obsession with instant fame at any price."

"Politcally, we are uncomfortable with the direction that Blair and Bush are leading both our countries. Blair's obsession with Dubya seems pretty unhealthy too."

If there was one track on 'Obsessed America' that truly encapsulated The Dirty Royals at their musical and lyrical finest, which one would it be? "Lyrically, the track 'CIA' is representative in that it puts elements of a personal relationship in a wider social context. It talks about the way that both our governments are clamping down on our civil liberties. Everyone is assumed to be guilty of something. In doing so, our governments are acting like jealous lovers, rifling through their partner's texts and emails behind their backs. This is a huge turnoff in any relationship, so no-one should be surprised when voting turnouts are down."

"Musically, 'CIA' is a 3 minute pop song that takes you from raw, hysterical energy through to a luscious and reflective coda. You really need to check out a show to sample all the delights at the Dirty Royals all-you-can-eat buffet."

Has your band name ever gotten you any weird, unwarranted comments back in England? "Not really - in fact most people think it's a cool name. The royal family are the best comedy act this country has produced, so it's hard to take it all that seriously."

Noting that some of you come from Oxford in the UK, what landmark is the town famous for ... and have you ever been there yourself? "Oxford is probably most famous for the University, but we didn't get the grades. If you're ever in Oxford, check out the Pitt-Rivers."

What happened in-between August of last year and May of this one that caused such a change in the band? "When our original drummer failed to get a visa to come to America in August we had to recruit a new drummer at very short notice. Happily our paths crossed with Keith Tenenbaum, who is an amazing drummer and a really cool guy. He is now our full-time drummer and brings his own special magic and personality to the music."

"Also, we learned a lot from the people we have been fortunate enough to work with over the past few months and we were inspired by all the experiences we had. There is a much more positive attitude to life in California than in most parts of Britain and this is definitely reflected in the new material we have written."

"Believe me, that Californian sunshine is a pretty potent catalyst!"

It's been quoted that Simon was shot by a passing motorist outside a pub in 2000 ... was this on purpose or by pure accident?! "Just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

What '80s (and possibly cheesy!) pop/rock song would you love to cover today if asked ... and why?! "80's AND cheesy? How about "How Can We Be Lovers" by Michael Bolton? I gather that the argument he's singing about was caused by his tendency to hog the remote!"

Lastly, I like Penguins ... do you?! "Of course! What's not to like? Mind you, we prefer Catwomen!"

Interviewed by Russell A. Trunk

If you would like to win an AUTOGRAPHED copy of The Dirty Royals' brand new CD, just answer this easy question: Back in 2000, Simon, Matt and Jimmy were all the rage in Great Britain as a hot indie band dubbed by some as the next Oasis and with a name that was again very European ... but what was that other band name that they had before The Dirty Royals?!

Send me your answers and if you're correct you'll be in the running to win one of these great new and AUTOGRAPHED CDs! Just send us an e:mail here before August 1st with your answer and the subject title 'DIRTY ROYALS SIGNED CDs' to: exclusivemagazine@flash.net
