Back now from Australia... just long enough to write this and then go to Cleveland.  Try to keep up, people...

The Ingenuity Festival Cleveland returns... and so will The ECC.

The Evolution Control Committee had a great time performing last year at Ingenuity Festival 2008, so when their call for artists came out for 2009's event it was a no-brainer to apply.  Guess they liked us too -- we're in!

This coming weekend The ECC brings The Wheel Of Mashup and our amazing new VidiMasher 3000 to Cleveland Ohio to do FOUR great shows for the 2009 Ingenuity Festival Cleveland.  After appearing in the festival's Preview Party on Thursday July 9th, The ECC hits the street to perform on the All Go Signs alley stage.  We'll do a fresh show for every day of the festival:

7:30-8 pm  •  Friday, July 10, 2009
10-10:30 pm  •  Saturday, July 11, 2009
5-5:30 pm  •  Sunday, July 12, 2009

Every show will be different with new mashups being created as audience members spin the Wheel Of Mashup.  But the rest of the music changes too: one of the great things about our new VidiMasher 3000 is that it makes improvised mashup music possible, cutting and pasting on the fly -- anything can happen!

Last year's festival was one of our highlights of the year.  Join us this weekend and see why!

WHAT: Ingenuity Festival Cleveland
WHEN: One show each day, 9-12 July 2009 (see times above)
WHERE:
Playhouse Square/Star Plaza, downtown Cleveland Ohio (map)
TICKETS: From $10 / Order tickets online

Down Under: Done!

Thank you, Australia -- it was great to see you dancing and partying with The Evolution Control Committee and our little Wheel Of Mashup show.  Our shows in Sydney and Cairns were both great times, as were the rest of the festivals our shows were part of.  We have many recordings, photos, and videos to sift through and share after our next travels -- until then, check out the Liquid Architecture blog for a very favorable review of our show there.  Here's hoping for a quick return and the chance to hit more cities across Australia!

Big thanks to the festival organizers: Shannon O'Neill and Jen Teo (Liquid Architecture Festival), and Nicholas Mills (On Edge Festival), and to Brent Clough (The Night Air, ABC), Jamie and Aspa (Mu Meson Archives and The Naked City), Hermann's Bar, and Mofo Gallery.

There's plenty of activity here at ECC headquarters as we approach our ECC mini-tour of Australia!  We're all looking forward to sharing the Wheel Of Mashup and the VidiMasher 3000 for the Liquid Architecture Festival in Sydney and the On Edge Festival in Cairns.

Those are our only stops in Australia Administrator, so don't miss them!
It took a month, but looky this:  We got some decent video (thanks Brooke & Owen!) from The ECC's great show at the DNA Lounge for the Bootie San Francisco mashup club night.  It synched very nicely with DNA Lounge's audio archive of the show and is now up on YouTube in lovely HD quality.  The best videos were our two final numbers:

One thing we like to do at shows is to see just how many sounds we can mashup together at the same time on the VidiMasher 3000, with The ECC's Mashettes Frillypants and Fancypants keeping count. We call this our 7-Up Mashdown, and it's also titled that on our Ritalin Ruckus album.

Then to finish things off, an ECC first -- a coordinated dance routine by The Mashettes (Fancypants and Frillypants) joined by TradeMark G.

And now, back into ECC history:  Through the 1990's The ECC had a sister, of sorts -- the band Gaga.  Gaga was Columbus Ohio's answer to Crash Worship and Einstuerzende Neubauten -- an industrial band relying heavily on junk persussion, fire-making toys, and beating props into a pulp. This is a clip from Gaga's most infamous show, where a fuel accident caused a fireball (at 7:05) that engulfed our keyboards and our singer! Maybe having her read/sing the Unabomber Manifesto was tempting fate...

ECC update just emailed -- not on our email list? Read it at: http://xrl.us/berhbo ...& in the upper-left on that page, sign up!

Welcome to May -- the big month with the shortest name.

For The Evolution Control Committee this should be a productive month.  With our travels to Europe, Seattle, and Los Angeles are out of the way we have 7 weeks until The ECC goes down under to Australia for the Liquid Architecture and On Edge festivals, followed quickly by the Ingenuity Cleveland festival.  During those 7 weeks work on our new album "All Rights Reserved" becomes top priority!  The majority of tracks are done, but there's still a lot of producing, mastering, artwork, promotion, and more to do before a release date is even in site.  Our rough target: this fall.

So if that's our top priority, why the heck did we agree to perform every single weekend this month?  oops?

If you're in San Francisco, don't miss Saturday's show!  Bootie is the biggest mashup music club night in the world -- this will be massive!

SHAKE YOUR BOOTIE: The ECC Returns to the Mashup Mecca this Saturday

Bootie's mashup empire has been growing with imperial zeal, reaching many major cities in the US, Europe, and even Australia and now in Beijing.  Although The ECC performed at Bootie's LA night just a couple months ago, it's been a couple years since The ECC headlined at Bootie's mothership night here in San Francisco.  And it is MASSIVE!  They had to make their monthly night twice monthly because they were regularly selling out the 1,500-ish capacity DNA Lounge every month.

That means this will easily be the largest US audience yet to see our new VidiMasher 3000, which has been dropping jaws everywhere.  The VidiMasher shares our mashup secrets with you -- watch and see how all of our live, improvised mashups are cut and pasted right on the spot.  It's made our Wheel Of Mashup shows really fun, really amazing, and really unique.

WHAT: The Wheel Of Mashup & VidiMasher 3000 @ Bootie SF
w/Adrian & the Mysterious D, Dada, Tim Barsky, DJs Malderor & Mad Murdock
WHEN: This Saturday, May 9th, 2009 / 9pm / ECC @ 11pm
WHERE: DNA Lounge / 375 11th @ Harrison / San Francisco, CA
HOW MUCH: $12 / Half price before 10pm / 21+

RADIO ACTIVE: Archives of Recent ECC Visits from Radio

The ECC recently paid another visit to the ubRadio Salon, the weekly internet radio show of Big City Orchestra on DFM Radio International.  We believe this collaboration made for the best show yet!  Joined once again by Univac, the two-hour show of improvised sounds and music had a handful of memorable moments.  But don't take our word for it:  Listen to the archive of that episode (as well as other episodes ECC has participated in) thanks to archive.org.

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=ubradio+68

Our interview on Another Nice Mess with DJ Marcelle was quite good, and we thought it a shame that the archive would only be available on her site for one week.  So:  Now for your permanent listening pleasure, our complete interview (aired April 14th, 2009).

http://evolution-control.com/index.php/experiments/mp3s/40-mp3s/177-archive-of-ecc-interview-with-dj-marcelle

The ECC has our own radio show too: The Sound Of Plaid airs every Thursday on Shouting Fire:

10a PST / 1p EST
 2p PST / 5p EST   (repeat)
 6p PST / 9p EST   (repeat)

OPERATRON: "Foibles Mench" Mashes Up Opera, Robots, Dance, and ECC

Longtime collaborator (Gaga; Cheese & Pants Theater), friend, and fellow Ohio ex-pat Gary Xaoui is producing an opera (as it were) to be performed one night only, Saturday May 16th 2009, with music produced and directed by The ECC's TradeMark G.  While talking with Xaoui he summed up the show in this quip:

"Think SRL... but with a plot."

THE OPERA NEEDS:  Drummers / Dancers / Set Builders
... and robots too, in case you have some... or are one.

For more info, email Gary Xaoui .. or TradeMark G. ...

Foibles Mench - Opera! Robots! Fire!
Live Mixed Arts Performance Depicts Man's Evolution and Destruction

HOW: Live performers, robots and clever props; tell the tale of the evolution of humanity from primitive to modern and beyond. Humans use machines first to improve and then to unwittingly destroy their environment, with the machines eventually taking over and destroying everything including themselves.

WHAT: "Foibles Mench" (man's folly) is a combination of performance, robots and live music that synthesizes opera, modern dance, and fire/machine art to present a narrative of the birth, destruction, and rebirth of civilization.
WHY: Everyone loves fire and robots - this event combines a variety of performance art styles with a strong plot and well planned sight-lines so that everyone can see the action!
WHERE: NIMBY, 8410 Amelia Street, Oakland CA 94621 (http://www.nimbyspace.org/)
WHEN: Saturday, MAY 16th at 10pm (Doors open at 8pm).
COST: Cost: $15 advance, $20 at the door (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63231)

when we get back.
Get back?  From where?

Coming soon... to a city near you?
With shows approaching in Eindhoven (Netherlands), London, Amsterdam, Seattle, Cleveland, and more you can see why we've been telling each other that 2009 is the year of The ECC.  But we're getting ahead of ourselves -- let's just stick to this weekend:  Hello, Los Angeles.
The
Bootie mashup club night has earned quite a bit of well-deserved
success, bursting their Bay Area britches and franchising the night to
New York, Paris, Munich, Beijing, Australia, and more.  But their first
post-SF city is still one of their biggest: Bootie Los Angeles.  The ECC had a great show there two years ago at the old Safari Sam's space, but with our hot new Vidimasher 3000
and an updated Wheel of Mashup it was high time to visit again.  Early
birds get in cheap AND get a free CD.  So come visit us at the Echoplex, spin the wheel, and mash your ass off!
WHAT: Bootie LA with The ECC, DJ Paul V, DJ Shyboy, and more

WHEN: This Saturday, March 7th 2009, 9p-2a (ECC @ 11p)

WHERE: Echoplex, 1154 Glendale Blvd. (Back Entrance)

HOW MUCH: $5 before 10p / $10 after

Looking for something to watch?  The ECC's TradeMark G. has set up a new YouTube channel to post videos of other bands that ECC has (and hasn't) shared the stage with.  See videos of The Master Musicians of Jajouka, L Ron Hubby, KALRI$$IAN, and more!

demonstrating our new video mashup screen, we certainly
didn't expect that over 142,000 of you would see it...!
Thanks to BoingBoing,

all the way to be a featured video on YouTube's home page:

Thanks! It's inspired us to make a live video of the

fell off YouTube's home page, it should stay on their full

***  THIMBLETRONIC ENERGY:  ECC COMPETES @ YURI'S NIGHT BAY AREA... HELP US WIN!  ***

No doubt jealous of the Maker Faire, NASA has recently gotten in on the action with Yuri's Night, a birthday party of sorts for man's first moments in space, and the man who did it: Yuri Gagarin.  It's an airplane-hanger-sized geekfest with real live astronauts, scientists, and geeks from NASA and beyond.

And "Beyond" is where we get in: The ECC is competing in the Musical Interface Competition, and we need your help!  The Thimbletron is sure to wow judges, but audience reaction is part of the game -- and that's where YOU come in.  So... come in!  If you're in the Bay Area, come to Yuri's Night at 2:30pm (yeah, in the afternoon... some "night", huh?) and get energized by the Thimbletronic power.

***  THE SOUND OF PLAID:  ECC INTERNET RADIO EVERY THURSDAY  ***

Every Thursday 3 times a day, The ECC's TradeMark G. hosts The Sound Of Plaid, a weekly internet radio show on Shouting Fire.  For two hours TradeMark features ECC music, audio curiosities from The ECC's expansive audio archive, and specials like The 20 Biggest Record Company Screw-Ups of All Time.  This week featured screw-ups from 20 down to 11; tune in next week to hear 10 down to 1!  Some excerpts such as Torture Music are posted to The ECC website, but the only way to hear the whole show is through Shouting Fire.

***  DINOSAUR GARDENS:  ECC ARCHIVE DUMPSITE  ***

The ECC has been dumping gems from the ECC audio archive into music blog Dinosaur Gardens for nearly two years now.  Ever wondered where the samples for our song "Don't Miss The Great Snatch" come from?  Hear 'em and download 'em!  The ECC has also posted porno 8-tracks, survival shelter radio ads, and more.  Every post is accompanied by high quality MP3s of the compete album or source featured.
