OK, so Tiger is human. He’s not perfect. The cat knows how to play after daddy has passed away. However, who on the range is driving Tiger’s PR ball? They need to get a better grip on the opportunity while Tiger’s irons are hot.

While Tiger sits at home, behind the guard-protected gates of his community, Golf’s #1 player is missing his very own annual tournament, The Chevron World Challenge, in Thousand Oaks, California. Three quarters of golf’s greatest players are teeing off at Tiger’s event—with a purse of over five million at stake. The event benefits Tiger’s foundation, which has helped over ten million kids since its inception in 1996. The Golf Channel is covering the first two rounds, live--today and tomorrow. NBC will televise the final two rounds this weekend.

While Tiger may not have felt like showing up and playing this weekend due to his personal woes, he could have done something for himself, his image, and the game of golf—if he chose to get on a plane and make a surprise appearance:

·        * For Himself, Tiger would have put his face right in the limelight. Rather than appear to be hiding behind the gates, he would have looked like a guy who is not afraid to face the world—head on. I mean, come on, he’s passing up a dozen hours of built-in TV coverage this weekend on both the Golf Channel and NBC!

·        * For His Image, Tiger would could have faced the cameras and controlled the entire situation. I mean, look at it this way, this tournament is Tigers! By the end of the weekend, America probably would have had enough of Tiger News!

·         *For the Game of Golf, what a missed opportunity! If Tiger would have participated in his own tourney, ratings on both the Golf Channel and NBC would have easily beaten the World Series! I don’t know if Tiger could have knocked off the Super Bowl, but my guess is that he would have come close. One thing’s for sure, the face of Golf would have been changed forever. It would have immediately become more mainstream, more accessible, more interesting to watch.

By choosing to not appear, attendance will be down, TV ratings will be cut in half, sponsors will be short-changed, and—most of all—the kids who benefit will be disappointed.

So, Tiger, my recommendation to you is to pack your clubs and head to the airport. Get on the next flight to L.A. and join your fellow golfers. I know you’ve missed the first couple of rounds, but it’s your tournament! Just join the pack, and play for the kids you support through your charitable foundation.

Remember, it’s not about winning; it’s about having the courage to step up and play—regardless of the obstacles. And, on Sunday, when those NBC network cameras are pointing at your face, simply look into the camera and apologize to your wife and children…to your many fans—and ask for forgiveness for, as you put it, your “ transgressions.”  This will be one of the greatest moments in golf, in sports, and in your life.

Tiger, do you really think God gave you this opportunity for to pass over? While you may not be able to win the tournament, you may win back so very much more.

According to breaking news on TheWrap.com, Oprah is set to announce that she will leave her talk show in 2011.

If this happens, and Oprah uses her show to launch OWN, I predict that it will be the biggest launch of a cable network in history. Her audience will find her, regardless where her show is aired. I suspect that this will help garner additional cable and satellite households, as well. It could also garner additional carriage fees for Discovery and Oprah. I'm sure she has taken a calculator to it. Oprah has given her stations an incredible run. She is not replaceable. Her value as a news lead-in (in most markets) is beyond measure. I suspect that distributors are licking their chops for these time periods. Many stations may opt to add an additional hour of news, especially the ABC o@o's which carry her. However, my guess is that Oprah will try to develop something to replace her syndicated talkfest. This would be a win-win for all concerned. She could promote her "replacement" for an entire season before departing. Is it any coincidence that Sarah Palin appeared on Oprah this week? Could there be more to this story? While Palin is no Oprah, she certainly would get better ratings than most anyone else who would attempt to fill such big shoes. Congrats to all concerned. Especially the King brothers who had the vision to launch Oprah nationally in 1986. I am very honored to have been a part of that effort as head of global marketing and creative affairs for King World during that era.

What do you think?

Glossies are being replaced by the Internet. TV is being replaced by the Internet. CDs are being replaced by downloads via the Internet. Brick and mortar retail is being replaced by the Internet.
Anyone who has a crystal ball that is not showing the future of media CLEARLY needs to take an early retirement.
McGraw-Hill announced today that it has sold the coveted business magazine, BUSINESSWEEK for $2 million-$5 million, plus debt. Just a few years ago, the publication was worth something around a billion dollars.
The BusinessWeek deal was brilliant. The domain name itself, based on the amount of traffic it gets, is worth $7,800,00. The value of the brand is priceless.
I predict that Mike Bloomberg will keep the magazine in print while he figures out the online strategy. Once he does, good-bye glossy sheet!
This is a good deal for BusinessWeek's employees, too. They'll get to keep their jobs, at least for a while.
Congrats to those involved for the creative dealmaking. It's nice to see a staple like BusinessWeek survive...and folks keep their paycheck.
For those of you who think the bloodbath is over...IT'S ONLY STARTING! TV and the Internet is about to converge over the next 3 years. With cable, satellite, and the Internet--there is no longer any reason to own an expensive "broadcast" station.

With the convergence of TV and the Internet just around the corner, domain names are going to become MORE THAN JUST DOMAIN NAMES. Mark my words! 100 Million TVs will be Internet ready by 2011. 60 Million flat screens will be Internet ready in the United States by 2013. Even today, many people are starting to watch web video in their living rooms by hooking up their laptop to their flat screen TV sets. What are you doing to get ready for this great opportunity? What will be YOUR domain channel? Trust me, we're entering a new generation of domaining. Let the revolution begin!

Michael Jackson's death has dominated the news for days. Since his death, the TV news networks have devoted so much of their "coveted" airtime to covering every aspect of MJ's story. It seems as though there is virtually no other news in the entire world!

Whatever happened to those people protesting in the streets of Iran over the outcome of their election? Whatever happened to our recession and the skyrocketing unemployment numbers? Whatever happened to all of those auto companies searching for more bailout dollars? Did someone come up with a cure for the swine flu?

I guess Michael Jackson really did end up making a real difference in our world. Sadly, he had to die to get us to focus on something more than the norm--NEGATIVE NEWS.

I think that the folks running the major networks, especially the news networks, really need to rethink what is NEWS in the first place. If we can go so many days without hearing so much about what is bad about the world in which we live, why can't this become the new norm?

I don't know about you, but I have found it refreshing over the past few days to turn on the TV and NOT hear about the world coming to an end. Yes, the Jackson coverage has been extreme; but it sure beats the usual negative brainwashing we seem to get 24/7.

Food for thought:

President Obama and congress pass an massive 800 million dollar stimulus package full of pork. Weeks later, we have an outbreak of swine flu!

Pass it on!

How I Visualized Calling The Shots In Hollywood When I Was A Pimple-Faced Kid In Ohio

When I was 13, I knew who I wanted to be when I grew up—a big-shot Television programmer. I visualized about the day I would hire and fire producers, wine and dine the talent, and present my programming line up to advertisers. I created a storyboard in my mind as to what my life would look like. To this day, I have a piece of paper that I authored when I was just about to enter high school. On it is a diagram of my life's goals—up to age 50. I remember creating a "backwards thinking" road map of each step I would need to take in order to achieve my ultimate goal. By thinking "backwards" rather than "forwards" you have already mentally achieved your goal—and you're simply filling in the steps necessary to get there.

Look at it this way, suppose your goal is to find your true love in the castle at the top of the highest mountain. Traditional "forward thinking" would have you climb the steep mountain in an effort to reach your destination—fighting the elements, the terrain, the fear of the unknown—and wondering if your princess is actually going to be there—and available—once you reach the top! Whereas with "backward thinking" you have already reached your destination, won the heart of your princess, and now all you have to do is to simply get down the hill—and back home. Face it; it's a lot easier looking down from the top, than looking up from the bottom.

Ironically I reached my goal in half the time that I had planned for. By the time I was 25 I was in Hollywood heading up global marketing and creative affairs for King World. I was hand-picked by the King Brothers to join the company when it only had a handful of employees, and assets of just a few million dollars. I was the main creative and marketing honcho on the west coast, reporting directly to the President and CEO, Michael King. We had garnered the rights to a couple of shows that had been canceled on the networks and turned them into the two biggest syndicated series of all-time—WHEEL OF FORTUNE and JEOPARDY! I then had the privilege of working with, and launching, OPRAH WINFREY nationally, along with top producers like Merv Griffin, Dick Clark, and dozens of others. While most of my friends had just graduated from college and started their careers, I was already in Hollywood starring in the role that I had visualized when I was 13. Years later, King World sold for billions of dollars. WHEEL, JEOPARDY, and OPRAH still remain at the top of the rating charts!

Throughout my career I have visualized each and every career move. I have painted storyboards in my head—providing myself with a road map to achieving my goals and fulfilling my short and long-term purpose. Prayer is also a powerful tool that I use. It helps me ask God to paint my storyboard for me. There is simply no greater artist than my Creator—the master of the universe.
