For those who don't know, I've been challenging myself with a little experiment. Since January of last year, I've recorded at least one song every other day in an attempt to make up some kind of musical journal of sorts. The name of the project is Days Run Away, which comes from a poem/book of poetry by Charles Bukowski. The name of my band is Swimmingpool The Band. Since I began, I've recorded up to 58 albums (I'm currently in the middle of 59). For every ten or so, I compile them into a more accessible collection.

The Songs range from straight out ambient-drone to more involved post-rock pieces. And though they may be heavily processed, they consist almost entirely of guitar, piano, clarinet and cello.
The following collection compiles my favorite tracks from albums 46 through 58. Two tracks feature outside help on the cello (Swans No. 2 and The Bay at Dawn) from my friend Diana Palermo.

In the past, feedback has ranged from:
'this is great studying music'
'this is great to get high to'
'it sounds like (any one of the following) Vangelis, The Silent Hill Soundtrack, Mist soundtrack, Brian Eno and Stars Of The Lid'
and 'I wish you wouldn't sing sometimes, It's distracting'.
To those concerned about the latter criticism, I don't sing nearly as much on this as I have in the past.

As always, I look forward to any and all feedback/criticisms.

Once my laptop is returned, I'll get to posting the new tracks from album 60 and 61.

I've had this up for a while and haven't bothered to update the blog yet. COMPILATION IV: SHAKING BRANCHES is now completed. You can download it at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P88BH0U1

Here's my blurb about it:
For anyone who hasn't seen my previous posts of free music, my solo project's name is Swimmingpool The Band. Since January of this year, I've started a bit of an experiment in which I would record at least three songs a week, preferably (and more often than not) I would do one a day. The title for this project is Days Run Away, based on the Charles Bukowski poem, Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over The Hills. Every collection of songs over 30 minutes long would result in an album. Admittedly, this can be somewhat overwhelming. As such, with every five albums, I decided to compile a compilation of my favorite tracks from the previous record.

The original songs were short, almost embarrassingly simple (on reflection). With each album, the songs began to grow more complex, longer and at times no longer retain the same ambient aesthetic as before. Some sound more, for lack of a better term, electronic in sound where as others tend to retain a more epic feel, perhaps even flirting with post-rock. Regardless of what they sound like, they're all free.

The following songs utilize more of my own vocals and drums (few electronic beats, more actual drums and/or percussion instruments, which essentially means my dad's crappy drum-set and various kitchen objects and vases). Beyond that, one song also features a sample from a close friend's band (http://www.myspace.com/elysianfields586) Elysium Fields. This compilation also spans six albums as a result of no internet access (meaning I continued to record and organized the records into a compilation following better access). As a result of which, the compilation is in two parts for two reasons.

Here are some of the tracks:

LINER NOTES FOR, THE WOLF AND THE GATEKEEPER: SWIMMINGPOOL THE BAND FROM 2006-2008

By Seamus Stimpson

I respect the football player more now than I ever did. I guess there is a bit of grace to playing professionally and under such pressure. I respect further the underdog. From the now inglorious Miami Dolphins to the hot/freezing Buffalo Bills, such grace under the pressure of the regular man who stakes his existence and escapism on one's performance is a feat which, to me, sounds agonizing. My recent attraction to the game is in the colors. One who's bitter outlook on their inability to get girlfriends as a result of football player's normal argument is to say that the sport is a rip off of rugby. Though debatable, the argument of aesthetic is almost undeniable. For many rugby teams, the colors of their jerseys are spotty, mainly noted in the L. Tigers Red & Green christmas colors. Many others prove that, with the exception of teams who's Jersey's remain the same as a result of tradition or country, whoever designed them had absolutely no sense of design or color.Â

Basketball and Hockey have more creative team names. Baseball is an all-together better and, quite frankly, more watch-able sport. The look of football, however, manages to win my favorite as far as visuals are concerned. When one watches re-plays of the on-field cameras, the visuals are stunning. The common boundary of acceptable human contact is broken in an instant. Internalized frustrations are the fuel that drives the vehicle of stress, tension, passion, physical wall, flesh, connecting and the audience connects. The colors have to be easy to define now. Unlike baseball where the teams do not make such contact, which could otherwise be confusing to a fan in the distance or watching television, as the football players do.

The patterns are simple as are the alternatives which go with away jerseys. Red and white, white and red. Green and white, white and green. The helmet is the coat of arms. A simple statement. My attraction grows further with the Dolphins.

Florida itself is not a state of intimidating sports teams.

Florida Marlins.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Mighty Ducks

Ect...

..

In a contact sport such as football, there's no Mighty to drive the name of the Dolphins. Strong as Dolphins may be, they are not as capable when put up against, in a purely literal sense, Jaguars, VIKINGS, Bulls, or even Giants. Even the Eagle would have the upper hand in a battle against a Dolphin if it were on land…where football is played. It's also fortunate that another natural enemy of the Dolphin, man, The Oilers, no longer exist…in football that is.

With my bias of aquatic life at hand, the combination of three colors, tealish green, white and orange, that ran so close to three that, in combination, I can't normally stand (Green, White and Orange, Ireland), revealed itself to be quite appealing to me. This and the fact that they were one of the first teams that I could recall off the top of my head, on account of Dan Marino and the Dolphin in Ace Ventura, slowly drew me back in.

Then I moved to Philly. For one's own safety, you learn the phrase "Yeah, go Birds!" if you're ever to talk about football. Seldom, if ever, do I see the jerseys of rivals or disliked teams in the city (Cowboys, Redskins (love their name by the way). Seldom did I also see the Jersey of my two underdog teams, which rival my vote for favorite next to The Eagles (A favorite which comes out of city pride and necessity mind you).

So then there's the Buffalo.

Or the Buffalos.

Who goes to upstate New York? I almost did. I almost attended SUNY BUFFALO for film. I didn't and ended up here, in Philadelphia. Had I ended up there I would've been faced with two teams (two that I do follow when they don't threaten the Philly teams), the Sabers (Hockey) and the Bills (Football). I remember when I was young constantly watching VHS tapes with the Bills on it. I don't know why my father owned them as he is not a football fan. I remembered loving the Bills for some unknown reason. In elementary school, that was the focus of ridicule when me and my peers played out sports center through lunchtime conversation.

"Cowboys are best!" a friend would say.

"The Giants" another.

We were young and did not have the patience to sit through an entire game. We would also soon move away from all sports, recognizing them as things the popular kids did, and did well (well...up until the steroid scandal which will long be remembered as one of the greatest moments in DHHS history). Time moves on and we grow up. Many of the friends I grew up with still (With the exception of my longtime friend Tim, an adamant and respectable Giants fan) do not like sports. They especially dislike football. Football is the jock's game. You've got to be an idiot to play it or enjoy it. I don't believe this.

Back to elementary school.

"You're dumb if you like the Bills, they suck."

My opinion is solid. Upon reflection, I truly believe it was their mascot, logo and coat of arms that attracted me to them. I've always loved magnificent and large creatures. The Buffalo is no exception. It seems that the history of the franchise has, in ways, paralleled that of the creature of which it's named. Once strong, great and near unbeatable soon falls victim to various outside circumstances. It still remains. Both Buffalos do.

They both still have a fan in me.

And I respect these players. On/off teams still have the dreams of their fans. Sure, many are overpaid and that sucks. There's nothing that can be done about it. Ironically enough, they're really the idols of the working man. Blue collar idols. The grace under pressure is frequently captured by the gorgeous on field cinematography. Falling. Rising. Crashing. Connecting. They wear helmets but it still hurts. In fact, I'm sure it hurts a lot.

THE WOLF AND THE GATEKEEPER is a collection of the songs I'm most proud of recorded during my Swimmingpool The Band years (which are still happening by the way...I just don't play live!). There are albums and albums and hours and hours of other solo crap dating even earlier than this. Ignore it.

People that, whether they know it or not, have contributed sounds, instruments, loops or Voices include some baptist minister from Louisiana, Jarrett Courtney, Liam Carroll, Erica Rega and Lou Ferrigno.
