Very positive reviews of Tommy T's The Prester John Sessions have been rolling in. We wanted to share some highlights with you:
“…his album grooves without compromise and glides by with beautiful melodies and glorious improvised jams…Prester John is an effusive statement of Ethiopian diversity to a previously ignorant world and a welcome addition to any music lover’s collection.”....

The Aquarian Weekly “The Prester John Sessions fizzes with energy and is a serious contender for African album of the year.”....
World Music Central "The Prester John Sessions is an intoxicating blend of Ethiopian folk styles, heavy dub reggae rhythms, gut-punching funk grooves, and horn-heavy Afrobeat. The Abyssinia Roots Collective…sews everything into a seamless flow…Tommy T takes this opportunity to balance between playing musical ambassador and musical adventurer, freely mixing the sounds he's been carrying inside him all his life with those he's absorbed along his journey.”....
All Music Guide“You can delve as deeply into the messages and the history of the music on The Prester John Sessions as you’d like, but you can also simply enjoy the album for what it is: a great mix of instrumentation, rhythms, and musical culture with its own voice – one that sounds ancient and fresh at the same time. If the goal was a “universal vibe,” then Tommy T and The Abyssinia Roots Collective have done what they set out to do.”....
Jambands.com“Bassist Tommy T. Gobena pulls together the funky rhythms and riffs of contemporary Ethiopian music, creating an enormously exciting, electrifying result.”....
JazzWax.com“The Prester John Sessions is an instrumental affair whose insinuating reggae grooves, tasty jazz licks, and churning slices of steamy Ethiopian funk combine for an international experience a lot more resonant and personal than anything you’ll find on some Putumayo mix CD.”....
LimeWire Music Blog“Engaging and interesting.”....
ChartAttack“A record full of [the] finest Ethiopian music.”....

The news recently came across that the great Italian reggae festival Rototom Sunsplash, which the Easy Star All-Stars have played twice (including earlier this year), has come under attack by Italian police and judges and is being forced to cancel operations in Italy . The claim is that reggae fans are criminals because of their smoking of ganja; the police have put increasing pressure on the directors of the festival and now they have responded by moving the festival to Spain in 2010. The Easy Star All-Stars play two shows in Italy November 18-19 and have dedicated their shows to supporting Rototom. Ras I-Ray and Menny More of the group even recorded a message of support while on the road in Austria , which was shown on a big screen at a support rally for the festival in Ossoppo this past friday. Here is the video:

If you are near the shows in Italy (see here  for details), come show your support for Rototom by being at a great reggae show. Reggae fans are not criminals!

TOMMY T.
"THE PRESTER JOHN SESSIONS"
For the past three years, Tommy T (Thomas T Gobena) has been the bass player for gypsy punk powerhouse Gogol Bordello. Tommy was born and raised in Addis Ababa ( Ethiopia 's capital city) and the knowledge of global rhythms he brings to Gogol's sound has become part of their
unclassifiable approach to music making.

With the encouragement of his Gogol Bordello band mates, Tommy has
produced his first solo effort, The Prester John Sessions. An aural travelogue that ranges freely through the music and culture of Ethiopia, the album is a collection of 11 songs including a remix of the track "Oromo Dub (Cushitic Dub)," featuring fellow Gogol Bordello band mates Eugene Hutz
and Pedro Erazo and mixed by Michael Goldwasser of the Easy Star All-Stars. The Prester John Sessions will be released exclusively via ITunes on October 13, 2009, with the wide release at traditional retail outlets everywhere on November 10, 2009 via Easy Star Records.
