Michaelangelos and Unk's are very excited to announce the "Feel The Beat, Not The Pain" Benefit Concert to be hosted at Unk’s on Thursday Nov 12th from 7p-11p.  The Benefit will be in the loving memory of Andrew Kirby and Landon Blackley, remembering the June 30th tragedy and to speak out about the pain of community violence.  All monies collected will go to a scholarship fund being created in Andrew Kirby's name.  Musical guests for the event include Big Hop, Cindercat, The Spittones and The Early Show House Band.

All bands are donating their time and all covers collected at the door will go directly to the Scholarship fund.  Further, Unk’s and Michelangelo’s Downtown will be donating 10% of the day’s gross sells to this great cause.  We would like to challenge other downtown restaurants, bars and businesses to also donate 10% of their sales on November 12th to the scholarship fund.  Realizing we are in a recessionary economy any monetary donation will be of great assistance.

Sponsorship Levels

Platinum - 10% of Sales on November 12th

Gold - $100 or more

Silver - $50 or more

Bronze - $25 or more

We would like to ask if your business would be willing to donate 10% of gross sales on November 12th.  If not, a smaller monetary donation, as well as hanging the event flyer in your business would, be greatly appreciated.

If you know of anyone else who would be willing to help, please feel free to forward this info.

Please feel free to contact me via email jeremy@drunksoasis.com
to discuss any help you may be able to give.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jeremy

It seems that many other local clubs and venues have jumped on the "Tribute Band" Band Wagon per se. At Unk's we strive to provide the best in local, regional and national touring acts and support our artists efforts to get their music to the masses. When we charge a cover at the door 75% or more of that cover is going directly to the artist and we often do not even cover our costs associated with our live music events such as the band guarantee, sound and lighting engineers and Sheriff's Deputies.  So when you are charged a cover remember that Unk's is not the on getting this moneyand don't complain because we are trying to provide the best music available.  Most often the amount of the cover is determined by the band, so if you like the band, support them by paying the cover.  If not, then come back and see us Sunday thru Thursday when there is never a cover.  Sunday we have NFL Sunday Ticket, Monday Football, Tuesday the Early Show with Live Music from 8p-11p, Wednesday Karaoke from 8p-11p and Thursday the Early Show with Live Music from 8p-11p.  And there is never a cover Sun - Thurs>

..

Check Out these Awesome Tribute Bands form the past, present and future at Unk's.  None have diosappointed and these guys are the real deal.  Quit being fooled by cheap immitators at other bars and clubs.

Dear City Council Member:

I write today to voice my opinion on the recent discussion involving crime overall in Greenville, as well as the attempt to restructure the Public/Private Club Use in downtown Greenville.  While the recent shootings and murders in the downtown area are tragic, I feel that these are somewhat isolated events.  Unfortunately, there are other sections of Greenville where incidents like this are a regular occurrence instead of a somewhat isolated incident.  With that being said, I do feel that both issues need to be seriously contemplated and addressed.

In my opinion, as well as others with whom I have discussed this issue, the best idea of the fifteen (15) proposed actions in the downtown area is to require all Public/Private Clubs  to have an off duty officer working in the establishment.  From first hand knowledge this has many benefits.  Patrons feel safer, a qualified individual is available to assist security in properly dealing with issues which arise, and a uniformed officer is a definite deterrent to underage drinking and fake IDs, as well as problematic patrons.   Further, officers would be aware of activities within the Clubs, as opposed to only dealing with the patrons when they end up on the street at closing time.  From a business owners perspective this also lowers potential liability as a sworn officer would be available to testify during any type of lawsuit which may arise from a number of issues.  A patron is a lot less likely to drive a vehicle when having consumed too many beverages when they have to walk by a uniformed officer and then drive from the parking lot.

Not only does this help the bar owners and security of the patrons, but if enacted in the same manner as Unk’s where an officer (in Unk’s case two (2)) are required anytime amplified music is played after 11pm there would basically be 16 officers in the CD district every Tuesday thru Saturday who would be paid by the bar owners instead of the taxpayers.  This idea could potentially reduce the number of on duty, city paid officers in the downtown area by half (from 25 to 12) and in effect still have 28 officers in the CD area.  I am unaware of how much of the $500,000 is related to salaries, but since most of these officers are either working overtime or are from the impact unit one could assume at least 60% – 70% is salaries.  Hypothetically, the math breaks down to a savings of $150,000 assuming $300,000 is salaries and half of the on duty officers would be required since an additional 16 officers would be in the area at the expense of the bar owners.

Not only would this save money in the downtown area, but also free up officers to police areas where serious violence is a constant instead of an abnormality.

Realizing this email is already rather lengthy, the other ideas I support would be: 1) Glass (or other transparent materials) on the front of these businesses.  Not only would this help with security as far as visibility into the establishments, but also would force owners to maintain and improve the interiors of their buildings and give a better overall feel to the downtown area much like Evans Street and the new Winslow’s Tavern (at least I believe that is the name).  2) Requiring the grandfather Clubs to obtain Special Use Permits instead of operating without fear of repercussions when the business is not operated properly.

It is a sad day when the murder of a woman who just wanted peace in her neighborhood and to be rid of drug dealers and violence does not cause the same uproar as the tragic incidents downtown, especially when crime is a regular occurrence in that neighborhood.  All areas of Greenville deserve to be policed with the number of units assigned in direct proportion to the current level of crime.  The bar owners can afford these measures.  The majority of their money is made off of cover sales which generate no sales tax, so while it has already been stated that the property taxes generate less than $20,000 per year, it would also be interesting to know how much sales tax revenue is reported by these businesses and makes its way back to Greenville.  With Penny Draft and Dollar Liqour being the norm in this area I do not imagine that the sales tax revenue makes up for the $500,000 shortfall.

The overall idea concerning the downtown bar district should be proper operation with oversight, not the more extreme stance of closing down these businesses.  I appreciate your public service and realize it requires an extreme amount of time and dedication.  I feel solutions are possible and that careful consideration and long term planning for the viability of these businesses, the Uptown Greenville area and crime in Greenville as a whole is quite possible.

Thank you for your time and I will gladly discuss this issue with you personally at your convenience if you are interested.  Having worked in restaurants for the past 18 years and owned restaurants for the past 11 years, I have many ideas on what can be done to at least improve the “operation” of the downtown bar district.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Spengeman

For anyone interested or who was there, Gifts for Grunts raised $1,150 which will be used to purchase goods and make gift packs for the men of Marine Delta Co. 2AABN currently serving in Iraq.  Thanks to all of you who showed up and supported such a great cause.  Without patrons like you we would be unable to host such great events to bring a little joy into the lives of others.  I also would like to thank Mick from 99X and the members of Stairwell, Assembly Required and Tailgate for donating their time and talent.  If you have yet to see one or any of these bands be sure to check them out at a live show, preferably at Unk's, but anywhere you can find them you will be in for a treat.

Also a very special thanks to our troops, the men and women, who day in and day out put their lives on the lines so that we may be fortunate to live free in such a great country.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Unk’s will be hosting the “Gifts for Grunts” Benefit on Thursday, August 27th from 7p-11p.

The event will be hosted by Mick from 99.5 the X along with a live remote and perhaps an infamous “Short Bus Sing-Along” or two.

Participating bands are Stairwell, Assembly Required and Tailgate.

We will be collecting a minimum donation of $5 at the door starting at 7pm.  All monies collected at the door will be used to purchase goods for Marine Delta Company 2AABN currently stationed in Afghanistan.  All expenses related to this event will be paid by Unk’s out of pocket including postage for the purchased goods, so you can be assured, and assure any who ask, that all money will be used to purchase much needed supplies.  The main items to be purchased will include socks, Gold Bond foot powder, beef jerky and other staples requested by the platoon.

On a personal note, my fiancée and I thank you for your participation as her brother, Jason, is part of this Platoon and is currently serving his 2nd tour (previously was in Iraq).  While it is not an easy time for us, or anyone with family overseas, it is very important to support our troops and keep them in good morale anyway possible.  Jason has already run over an IED (land mine) in his tank and fortunately none of the 4 crew was seriously injured and Jason has returned to duty.  Please keep him and all of our troops in your prayers.

We thank the bands and all those providing their time and talent for the “Gifts for Grunts” benefit, as well as you, the supporters of Unk’s whose patronage make events like this possible.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

The Board of Adjustments granted Unk's a Special Use Permit to operate as the newly defined use "Dining and Entertainment Establishment" on Thursday May 28th.  This successfully marks the end of Unk's battle against TRUNA and the City to remain in business. Now we are able to concentrate on our main goal which is to provide "Goods Food, Good Drinks and Good Times" to all of our patrons old and new.

The major changes from an operations stand point as will be viewed by you, the customer, are as follows:

Audio entertainment must end by 11pm Sunday thru Thursday.  Unk's will remain open until 2am nightly, this just means music Sunday thru Thursday must end by 11pm.

On any night live music is offered after 11pm (Friday, Saturday or New Years Eve) we must have two off duty Plice Officers to patrol the parking lot.  Those of you reading this know that this is almost totally unneccessary, but at least now we can boast the safest parking lot in Greenville, as well as deter crime throughout our neighborhood.

Unk's can now charge a cover.  In the past it has been limiting and also quite a struggle to provide quality entertainment while absorbing all of the costs thru sales.  Now with a cover we are able to offer popular more expensive bands.  As you will see on our page, we are very excited to have the Kelly Bell Band return twice before the end of the year, as well as another appearance of Nevermind - The Ultimate Nirvana Tribute.  Our new Tribute Concert Series has been announced and so far we have lined up appearances by Behind the Sun - A Tribute to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Once - Pearl Jam Tribute Band, Local Favorites Appetite for Destruction - A Tribute to Guns N Roses and Eulogy, the Ultimate Tool Tribute.  Flyers are up on the page as well as videos for many of these bands.  We also will see the return of many of out other popular bands, so be sure to check out DJ Williams Projekt, Suicide Blonde, BallyHoo! and Villanova.  If you have band suggestions or requests, message us and we will look into booking your favorite band.

For the summer we will be hosting Krazy Karaoke on Wednesday from 8p-11p, Live Music on Friday from 10p - 2a and Live Music on Saturday from 8p-11p.  We will tentatively return to having Saturday music from 10p - 2a the last weekend in August when Once, the Ultimate Pearl Jam Tribute will take the stage.  Due to the cost of the off duty police officers we decided to move up the Saturday music and also see if there is interest in earlier entertainment.

If you are interested in being part of the Unk's street team and posting flyers up around the area, please let us know.  Special perks are available.

Finally, I would like to thank all of you who have supported us during this trying time, we look forward to serving you again in the very near future.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Due to the number of bands who request to be Dr.Unk's friend, we do not accept bands as friends unless they are scheduled to play at Dr.Unk's.  If you would like to introduce us to your music in the hopes of playing at Dr.Unk's, please see the associated blog.

By no means are we trying to be exclusive, but with 800 friends and counting we like to be able to easily stay in touch with our friends and customers as opposed to reading 100s of bulletins posted by bands who are not currently in our rotation.

Thanks for your cooperation and we would love to hear your music, but please send  it through the appropriate route as discussed in Band Bookings Blog.
