Episode 3 - Rise above the Chatter: Using Streaming Media on the Web without Throwing Away Your Money [6:36m]:
DownloadTranscription:What is streaming media anyway?
Well, according to Wikipedia,
Streaming media is multimedia that is continuously received by, and normally displayed to, the end-user while it is being delivered by the provider. The name refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than to the medium itself. The distinction is usually applied to media that are distributed over telecommunications networks, as most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g. radio, television) or inherently non-streaming (e.g. books, video cassettes, audio CDs). The verb 'to stream' is also derived from this term, meaning to deliver media in this manner
An example of a streaming media outlet you might be familiar with is YouTube. All the videos on YouTube are streaming videos. If you're listening to this podcast with the player directly on this page, you are listening to streaming media.
The reason this is so important for you and your online presence is that the web is changing. People are bombarded with thousands of advertisements and messages every single day even if they don't turn on the TV or Radio. If you don't put any effort into it, the web can be a pretty boring place too. If you want your prospects and customers to get to know you better, the best way to rise above the chatter is to put your voice or a video of yourself online. This can be in the form of a welcome message on your site, audio or video testimonials, demonstrations of your products or services, or syndicated media like this podcast.
There are a lot of options out there when it comes to streaming media. For video, unless the content is something you want to keep from the general public (like an actual product people are paying for) the best way is usually just to use something like YouTube or Google Video to host your video. The reason for this is that video takes up a lot of space and bandwidth and if you can host it for your free on someone else's' servers, you should take advantage of it. If you exceed your bandwidth capacity on your hosting account, your whole site can go down.
For audio, file size and bandwidth isn't as much of an issue, but it still comes up a lot. Some of the most popular solutions for streaming audio are monthly programs. They charge you a monthly fee, usually between $20.00 and $40.00 and you can host you audio in your account with them. These services are fairly easy to use and allow you to create streaming audio and sometimes video players as well as some other features depending on the specific service.
The reason I don't usually suggest these services anymore is because for the price of one or two months in one of these program, you can buy power streaming audio software that allows you to create your own streaming audio players. You host them directly on your site so you have complete control of them. When you use those monthly programs, they put arbitrary monthly bandwidth limitations on your account and if you exceed them, you audio stops working. Generally, even with inexpensive web site hosting accounts, the amount of bandwidth you get greatly exceeds what you would get with the monthly streaming audio programs.
The best, most reasonably priced and easiest to use streaming audio software I have found is Impact Web Audio. Impact Web Audio allows you to create unlimited streaming media players in an array of shapes, sizes and colors. You adjust the quality of the audio playback to fit your specifications and you can even have a new page open up after the audio is done playing. The greatest thing about it is that once you purchase it, you own it and you don't have to keep pouring money into a monthly membership program. The thing about those membership programs is that if you ever change your mind and want to cancel your account, all of the streaming media players you have online become inactive, creating a ton of work for you in the long run. To avoid this mess in the future and to start easily creating streaming audio players, check out
Impact Web Audio. It's satisfaction guaranteed and it's all for the price of about 2 months with on of the leading subscription-based streaming media options available online.
