Are there any women out there who are actively engaged in producing their own music? There aren't that many of us out there, or so the media would have us believe, but I have a sneaky suspicion that there is a bit of a quiet revolution going on in women's spare bedrooms, kitchens, cellars and attics.. any quiet space, in fact, that has room for a computer, a guitar or piano and a mike.

In fact, I feel so strongly about this sneaky feeling that I'm doing a Phd about it so unless I'm completely wrong and I'm one of only a few female artists who writes, records, produces and releases all her own stuff, I would love to hear from you and include your story in this monster of a thesis I'm writing.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Well, the gals and myself had a sublime time at The Guardian Hay Festival last weekend. As anyone in the UK will know, the weather was just gorgeous. We were wonderfully looked after and both the show on friday night, 29th May and the TV broadcast on Sat. 30th all went without a hitch. The only slight misdemeanor was that I somehow managed to get locked in a portaloo 5 minutes before we were due on stage on the friday night!

There was a funny catch on the outside door of this loo - a bit like a child lock - and when it swung shut in the evening Hay breeze, I found myself locked in. It was one of those situations where at first you laugh to yourself thinking, this is funny, no one would believe this...and then you start to panic. Luckily Cath heard my plaintive cries for help and came running over to let me out just in time.

I have to say I was very unimpressed by Hot Leg, the reincarnation of The Darkness who were sitting by an open door of a marquee (do marquees have doors?)RIGHT NEXT TO the portacabin loos. They must have heard my pathetic cries for help... and completely ignored me...nice.

Anyway, after being somewhat out of breath and not a little disorienated for the first few songs, we had a splendid time playing to an incredibly polite and rather lovely Hay Festival audience. We were each given a rose at the end of the set - now you don't get that at The Borderline - and lots of folk came up to say hello afterwards.

We packed up the gear and it still felt warm! Those of you in sunnier climes may not appreciate that to have a balmy evening in England where the air smells sweet after a hot day is a rare occurrence indeed and one that merits comment! We headed back to the hotel, Naomi taking the lead with her sat nav and Cath and myself following close behind. My cynicism over the use of such contraptions dissolved last weekend as the technology earned its place in my estimation in its helping us out of a few unplanned detours between Norfolk and Hay...

So, we were all tucked up before midnight as we had to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for our TV debut the next morning as you know what they say about cameras never lying etc etc

We arrived at the Hay green room the next morning as arranged at 10.30am. The green room was an oasis of calm and we were soon escorted by floor manager Leo to the Sky Arts studio for rehearsal. We didn't have an awful lot of time but the efficiency and professionalism of the sound crew put us instantly at our ease and we were soon done and ready for make up.

The line up for this penultimate Hay-on-Sky show, introduced by Mariella Frostrup, was really interesting: burlesque artist, Immodesty Blaize, novelist, Sarah Waters and man behind the tv series The Wire, David Simon. We were on just before David Simon.

I was a bit concerned over the tuning of my guitar as the different temperatures were doing odd things to it but it was fine and I think I can say that all three of us really enjoyed the performance. We played 'A Place in The Sun', second track on the album and, as it happened, very appropriately titled for our very sunny and very wonderful weekend at The Guardian Hay Festival and Sky Arts. If you missed the show, you will be able to catch it again on the Hay-on-Sky, Sky Arts websiste.

Well, me and the gals are all ready for next week's gig at The Borderline supporting Eileen Rose - caught a sneak preview of her session for Bob Harris, she's great, so it should be a good night all round.

We will be on around 8pm so if any of you are in London next thursday, 18th, come down and say hello!

It has been very remiss of me not to mention the two wonderful women who have been playing live with me since May, so before we hit the road again, may I introduce, first of all, Cath Evans.

Cath played all the drums on the album and was introduced to me via the Latvian double bass player, Ivars Gaienieks, who also played on the album. Ivars had seen Cath playing at a jazz jamming session in Norwich just before he did his sessions for me. It works out that not only had Cath moved to Norfolk having previously lived in Manchester for a while, like me, but that she had played with loads of people who I used to play with years ago - small world huh!

Live, Cath, gives a new definition to multi tasking. She plays the cajon, percussion, keyboard and sings backing vocals - more often than not, all at the same time!

Playing cello, is our very lovely and very wonderful Naomi Payne Cooke. Naomi walked through the door just weeks before our first gig together in May and we knew straight away she was the gal for the job! Naomi was introduced to me via Philip Trzebiatowski, who played cello on the album and there lies yet another tale.

Naomi had also just recently relocated to Norfolk and was looking to meet other cellists. She had been told the name of one ex-London cellist, now based here, Philip Trzebiatowski.

After having just moved here, she had to leave her cello in to be repaired and on her way home saw a man sitting on a bench with a cello case eating a sandwich. She went up to introduce herself, not knowing that, lo and behold, it was none other than our Philip. Philip was actually all ready to be the cellist in the band but due to a very serious ear infection, couldn't do it and recommended this new woman that he had just met. And the rest, as they say....

So, there you go...fate?...coincidence?...All I know is that it is bloody good fun having two cool cats on stage with me after a few too many years of going it alone.

So, if you are reading this and you fancy catching the gals and myself live, put September 18th at The Borderline in your diary or October 22nd at the Green Note. There are more dates in the pipeline so I'll keep you posted. As I'm here, I guess I ought to mention that the album is going to be released mid october - we haven't got an actual day yet but will do very soon.

All the best for now,
