Hi Everyone! This page has a lot of people whom drunk driving has affected in an all too personal and tragic way, so wanted to reach out to all of you here. This week (through my birthday, September 19th), I am donating $5 of each CD sale to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). If you aren't familiar with my music, you can hear some of it at my main myspace - http://Lynnsongs.comAll of the songs there are on my CD, including my drunk driving themed song "I Wasn't A Friend" (which is also the profile song on this myspace page). Additionally, I do a cover on my CD of the Pat Benatar classic "We Belong", which features special guest Brian May of the legendary group QUEEN. You can see a video of that at this YouTube page.
If you enjoy my music and are passionate about helping to end drunk driving, now would be a great time to buy my CD. Upon your purchase, I will make a $5 donation and add YOUR NAME to the fundraising honor roll at MADD!
For more details and link to where you buy my CD for this special donation deal, please visit my blog at here and please repost this or the blog if you can - Thanks so much, everyone!!

Current mood: frustrated
Life is ironic sometimes. On Sunday, May 18th, the girl who wrote a song about drunk driving, has been promoting drunk driving awareness at this page and at events for MADD and RADD, got hit by a drunk driver out of the clear blue sky at 10:30 pm, while driving home from a social event with two friends. She never even saw it coming.
The girl I'm talking about would be me. I'm Lynn Carey Saylor, the songwriter/singer of the song "I Wasn't A Friend", which is playing on this profile's front page. And I was one of the lucky ones. I'm sitting here writing you about this. Many others hit by someone who was as drunk as the 23-year-old with a SUSPENDED license was (suggesting he is likely a repeat drunk driver) the night he hit me aren't around anymore to talk about it. My educated guess is that his blood alcohol level was at or close to 3x the legal limit, judging from his behavior. He couldn't speak English, but a drunk is a drunk in ANY language and it was painfully obvious how completely intoxicated this guy was the second he got out of the car.
The accident itself was scary in that he first came up on my car at a high enough rate of speed that he had to slam on the brakes to miss the car, making a jarring screeching sound which startled me, but then floored the gas in an ill-fated attempt to go around my car to the left and instead smashed right into it, then kept driving as if nothing happened and initially appeared like he was going to pull a hit and run. I actually ducked right after the impact (as he was flying by my driver's side window) because I live in LA and for a moment I thought he actually meant to ram into me and was now going by my driver's side to SHOOT me from his car window. Too many stories of drive by shootings in the city you live in will make you skittish like this, believe me!
Fortunately, my fear on that level was not realized and while he was attempting to make a left turn to his getaway path, traffic at a red light stopped him long enough to get a license plate number and I think maybe he knew that, so he made the turn once the light turned green and pulled into a parking lot and got out of his vehicle, which was a Ford Explorer (worth mentioning because this is the sort of vehicle that packs a punch when it hits you).
After figuring out that Spanish, not English, was this guy's language, I pulled out my driver's license and held it up and pointed at it and then at him in my attempt to say, "Do you have a license?". I did the same thing with my insurance card. To both things he kept shaking his head, "No". One thing he was EAGER to show me that he DID have, however, was CASH. He pulled out a $100 bill and tried to hand it to me, thinking perhaps if he gave me his money, I'd let him off the hook to drive off before the police arrived. I shook my head and waved my hands, "No", and then he pulled out another $100 to try and give me $200 total. He looked like he had a lot more money to pull out and try and bribe me with, too, but my contorted and disgusted looking face no doubt let him now this idea of his wasn't going to work. There would not have been enough money in the world that he could have handed me to let him drive off to potentially hit (and possibly kill) someone else.
I was frustrated with the police, I must say, because they took a long time to get there (even though we made it very clear we had been hit by a drunk driver and needed assistance to keep him at the scene). I was very concerned that this guy was going to have a change of heart about staying at the scene the longer we waited and I did NOT want to have to take off in my car chasing a drunk driver through some LA streets at Midnight! Finally, they did show up, did their sobriety test thing with him and after waiting another half hour for the Spanish speaking officer to arrive to read this guy his rights, he was handcuffed and arrested.
I have some minor whiplash and back issues from the accident, but as I said, I am one of the LUCKY ones. It could have been so much worse. A couple of days ago, I got an email from MADD (I'm on their mailing list), which was targeted to those of us in California. I would like to share it and the links they included with you. The information is sobering and if you live in California, as I do, please consider their request to express your disapproval of the actions of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, as explained below. It is my opinion that there SHOULD be mandatory ignition interlocks on the vehicles of ALL convicted drunk drivers and why a bill mandating that isn't a slam dunk is a complete mystery to me. My guess is that none of those people on the Assembly Appropriations Committee have had a loved one or close personal friend killed by the actions of a drunk driver.
Read on below. The rest of the text is from MADD's email appeal.
Thanks to all who take the time to read this blog.
xo Lynn Carey Saylor
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Californians share the road with 310,971 drivers with 3 or more DUI convictions -- and 44,210 drivers with 5 or more DUI convictions.
This is a shocking and troubling number of repeat drunk drivers. But California Assemblyman Mike Feuer introduced AB 2784, a bill -- which received almost unanimous support from the Assembly Public Safety Committee -- that will help protect citizens by mandating ignition interlocks on the vehicles of ALL convicted drunk drivers. Passage of AB 2784 will result in a significant decline in DUI recidivism and more importantly, numerous California lives saved and injuries avoided. Unfortunately, last Friday the Assembly Appropriations Committee took a significant step backwards in the fight against drunk driving by removing the mandatory interlock provision in AB 2784.
Urgent action is needed to restore the provision in AB 2784 to require ignition interlocks on the vehicles of all convicted drunk drivers before an Assembly floor vote scheduled for this week.
Please email and/or call Appropriations Committee Chairman Mark Leno at his district office in San Francisco at 415-557-3013 or in Sacramento at 916-319-2013 and urge him to strike the amendments to AB 2784 and mandate ignition interlock usage by all persons in California convicted of DUI. Here is Mark Leno's direct website contact page: http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a13/Contact/default.aspx
Forward this e-mail on to your friends, family and neighbors and encourage them to contact Assemblyman Leno. Here is a form at the MADD website for forwarding this message: http://support.madd.org/site/TellAFriend?msgId=10101.0&devId=9801

I’m very pleased to see that Kelly Ripa of Regis and Kelly talk show fame has filmed a PSA for the Walk Like Madd Event I am performing at in Raleigh, North Carolina in a little over a week (Saturday, March 29). Her sister was nearly killed by a drunk driver, so she has been very active in helping to get the message out that drinking and driving DO NOT mix (and God bless her for it!). Check out her PSA below, which has all the details about how you can participate and PLEASE DO if you are in the vicinity of Raleigh. This is a HIGH PROFILE event, which will be attended by the CEO of MADD and Elizabeth Dole! We are still taking bids on our guitar auction to benefit MADD, also, so please see my blog at this link for pics of the guitar and auction details if you haven’t already. High bid is still only $500 and believe me, this one-of-a-kind-guitar is definitely worth MORE than that and ALL PROCEEDS are going to help in the fight against DRUNK DRIVING!

Hey Gang! I am so very PLEASED to announce the start of a charity auction of the beautiful ONE-OF-A-KIND guitar pictured below, which was handcrafted and designed by Rob Videtto of Rob's Guitar Works (http://robsguitarworks.com). The beauty with its creator, Rob Videtto! Rob, who previously made me a Les Paul style guitar which I adore, made this guitar especially for me to sign (on back of guitar), auction and to donate 100% of the proceeds of to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) during an appearance I will be making at the "Walk Like MADD" event in Raleigh, North Carolina on March 29th, where I will also be performing (see my events section on my main page for more details). Those of you who own my CD know that the issue of drunk driving is something I care a great deal about, with my having written a song for my album called "I Wasn't A Friend", which sends a strong message about the consequences of not stopping a friend from driving drunk, and dedicating it in the liner notes to all the families who have lost a loved one in a drunk driving accident. It was through my efforts at promoting this song and drunk driving awareness in general that I came to know a beautiful lady named Zebbra who wrote to tell me how much the song meant to her because her only son, Johnathon Ferguson, had been killed by a drunk driver in October of 2005. The money raised in the auction that MADD receives is, of course, in honor of ALL victims of drunk driving, but the guitar has a specific logo dedication on the headstock, which was created by Vicky Adair, that indicates the guitar was lovingly made in Memory of Zebbra's son specifically. Zebbra is the one who brought me and my song to the attention of MADD's chapter in North Carolina (I'm grateful for that - thank you, Zebbra!) and her son John also played guitar ( as mentioned in my previous blog - the current profile pic on this page is of John with his guitar and so it seems especially appropriate that a beautiful guitar was created with a dedication to him on it and the money will go to help MADD and their cause. Vicky's head stock logo dedication up close Zebbra and I would like to thank all the wonderful people who have had a part in making the guitar a reality. First and foremost, our very special thanks to Rob Videtto. For the donations of parts or special pricing on materials needed to create the guitar, thank you to http://www.guitarheads.net, http://www.allparts.com, Southeast Music out of Tennessee and Wood Workers Wource of Arizona. Last, but not least, thanks to Vicky Adair for her time and creativity in making the headstock logo design. If the guitar's minimum price is out of your reach to make a bid, please consider making any donation directly to "John's Team" at the Walk or, if you are in the area, please consider signing up as a walker yourself. Zebbra would love to have you join her! I would also like to personally thank my fans/friends who have donated directly to the MADD Walk already - Don, Tim, Racheal, Suzanne, Vicky, Ron and Michele. INSTRUCTIONS FOR BIDDING ON THE GUITAR: Please send an email to Lori.Brown@MADD.org with your first and last name, address and contact telephone number along with your bid. Our high bid at the moment is $400, so please make your bid amount higher than that if you wish to make a play for this beautiful guitar. Bidding ends at 4:00pm Friday March 28, 2008 and the winner will be contacted, as well as posted online (unless winner specifically asks to remain anonymous). If for some reason payment cannot be made by the winning bidder, then the guitar will go to the next highest bid. MADD will be responsible for contacting the winner and accepting payment. Credit cards and checks are accepted, payment must post before guitar will be shipped. Rob Videtto will be on hand to present the guitar to me for my autograph at the MADD walk on March 29th while I am on stage for a live performance of "I Wasn't A Friend". Please come out to this event if you are able. The guitar will be shipped once payment has been made by the winner and after the MADD walk on March 29, 2008. The following is a repeat of a blog I posted recently at my main myspace page. Please see the duplicate blog for some comments already made about this, including touching words by John's Mom, Zebbra Oliver. Many thanks to Racheal and Don Campbell for being the FIRST to donate to "John's Team" because of the blog I wrote. ------------------------ Hi Everyone, I would like to announce my intention to donate 50% of all the net download money from my drunk driving themed song "I Wasn't A Friend" purchased through my page at http://blastmymusic.com/Lynncareysaylor to the "John's Team" Strides For Change walk fund in Raleigh, N.C., from now until the date of the walk, March 29, 2008. Also, If you purchase an entire album download of "You Like It Clean" for $9.99 through the above link between now and March 29, I will donate half of those net proceeds as well. The album download not only includes all 11 songs from my CD, but also a bonus 12th song not on the album. It's the only place on the Internet that you can get the 12th song included with the album download. If you are not familiar with my song "I Wasn't A Friend", it can be heard in its entirety on my myspace player or at http://drivingdrunkkills.com. The site stridesforchange.org is a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) website and they are the organizer of the event and beneficiary of the funds raised. MADD works in more than 600 communities across the U.S. and has more than 1,400 trained victim advocates on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support victims with comfort or legal assistance they can rely on. John's Team was started and is headed by my friend Zebbra Oliver who lost her beautiful and talented son Johnathon Ferguson on October 2, 2005, when he was killed by a drunk driver at the young age of 19. Although nothing can bring John back, Zebbra walks in this event in memory of her beloved son because she wants to help raise awareness and funds so that other parents don't have to go through what she had to endure by the immeasurable loss of losing a child to a drunk driver. Zebbra's fund raising goal for her walk on March 29th is just $1,000. Please help her meet (or hopefully exceed) this goal by downloading my song or album from the above link or by going directly to her page at the strides for change website and making a donation. If you happen to be IN the Raleigh area, Zebbra would love to have you join her on the walk! Details on that are at the stridesforchange web site. Below is my very favorite picture of John, playing his guitar, which Zebbra tells me he loved to do. Because I also play guitar, I feel a special bond with this great picture of him in particular and wanted to share it with all of you. These words below are from John's Mom: WHO WAS JOHN......... He was a son, a brother, a grandchild, a nephew, an uncle, a friend, someone's love. Johnathon was full of life and loved life. Johnathon was a very talented young man in almost all areas of his life. He could do anything he put his mind to. Johnathon had many friends and was kind to everyone no matter who they were. He was a sensitive and loving young man. Johnathon wasn't a trouble maker, he was never arrested and he didn't do drugs, drink or even smoke cigarettes. Johnathon 19 years old knew that if under the influence of drugs and or alcohol and to get behind the wheel of a vehicle was a danger to himself and others. At a Every 15 minute program put on by the local Police Department and MADD at Chaparral High School where Johnathon was a student, he became very emotional after seeing how the actions of drinking and driving could hurt a family and friends and take a life or life's in a instance. He will always be loved and in my heart. I miss you John. -John's Mom, Zebbra Oliver
Thank you, everyone! I know I can count on my fans to help in this worthy cause. I invite all of you to pass on the link to this blog, write your own bulletins about it and help spread the word. Much Love, xo Lynn Carey Saylor

Hi All, I had a great time yesterday participating as judge in the RADD sponsored "Battle of the Bartenders" event, in which various venue Bartenders at Universal CityWalk were in a "mix-off" competition to vie for the best non-alcoholic beverage to promote a safe holiday season. ALL of the drinks were festive and tasty and having any one of them would make a designated driver feel like they weren't missing out and a part of the party. I am pleased to present the winning drink recipe here, which we collectively selected as the best overall drink. For the record, had I been the sole judge, this is the drink I would have selected and I'm definitely going to try and make this at home! 1st PLACE CAFÉ TU TU TANGO Atomic Sangria Mix together the following ingredients in a pitcher: Ingredients: Fre Merlot - (alcohol removed red wine) 1/4 cup Orange Juice 1/4 cup Apple Juice 1/4 cup Lemonade 2 Tbsp. Fresh Sugar 1/4 cup Sprite After mixed, float 1 can of energy drink - that's gives the edge to this sangria; Add lots of fresh fruit chunks to pitcher. Serves 9, 7oz. glasses. If you'd like to download ALL the drink recipes that we judged, here is the link to the .pdf file of them: http://radd.org/cwo_images/RADD%20&%20BOTB-Recipes%2007.pdf Photos below were taken by P.J. Holiday Greetings to everyone!
Those of you who have been supportive of my drunk driving awareness efforts with my song, "I Wasn't A Friend", will be pleased to know that I will be making my first public/media appearance for RADD (RADD.org) as a judge for the event described in the press release below next Wednesday at Universal CityWalk. I am also scheduled for a televised morning news show appearance the following day with the winner of the "Mix-off". Hopefully, I'll be able to have someone tape the television appearance, so I can post a video of that.
I am proud to be embraced by RADD and have their support for my song, as they are the entertainment industry's leading voice for drunk driving awareness and road safety in the U.S.
For those of you in the Los Angeles area who may be wondering if you can attend this, the event itself is invited guests/media only, BUT CityWalk is open to the pubic so people are welcome to come and view from the sidewalk. Since the event is outside on the Tu Tu Tango patio it will be easy to view from the walkways.
Happy Holidays to all and thanks to everyone who has been supportive in my efforts to get the message of my song "I Wasn't A Friend" out into the world. This event is only the beginning and I look forward to all the ways in which I can represent RADD and promote my song, which sends a strong message that friends don't let friends drive drunk, to the public in 2008.

Hi Everyone, I do a lot of Google searching in my quest to keep on top of what's going on in the drunk driving prevention world and to try to find meaningful places to send my anti-drunk driving song " I Wasn't A Friend" to. During one such search today, I stumbled on two newly posted drunk driving PSA videos made by one of my favorite television personalities, Kelly Ripa of the "LIVE with Regis & Kelly" morning ABC show. You all may (or may not) know that Kelly has a very personal reason for having made these videos for the prominent drunk driving organization MADD. On August 18, 1999, Kelly's sister Linda Ripa was hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light at almost 80 mph. Linda Ripa was eight months pregnant at the time. Linda Ripa broke her nose, her sternum in several places, her back in three places, her pelvis in five places, and the bones of her right ankle and foot. The baby that Linda Ripa was carrying went into a coma in utero after the bones of Linda Ripa's pelvis smashed into his head. Linda Ripa refused pain medication because she didn't want it to impact her baby. Miraculously, the baby survived, but the physical and emotional effects of the crash still haunt her. I admire Kelly tremendously for the bright, bubbly, funny and warm presence she is on television and even more so for taking a stand following her sister's tragic accident and using her celebrity to help make a difference in the critical area of drunk driving prevention and awareness of MADD and what they do. I wish I could meet Kelly and play my song "I Wasn't A Friend" on the Regis & Kelly show someday. In the meantime, while I figure out how to make that LOFTY dream come true, I am happy to post Kelly's MADD PSA's here in this blog that were posted over on YouTube on September 04, 2007 by MADD under user name "MADDOnline" Kudos to you, Kelly! xo Lynn Carey Saylor

Hi everyone, I found the following posted at http://www.friendsdrivesober.org and found it very worthy of posting here on this page. I also contacted the site about my song "I Wasn't A Friend" because I think it would be a perfect theme song for their organization. I hope they think so as well. Good work they are doing there, so please check them out and read the tips below that I found there.

How to Stop a Friend From Driving Impaired
If a friend or someone you know has been drinking while at a party or "out on the town," they shouldn't drive, so please prevent them from doing so. Many people believe that coffee, a cold shower, or fresh air is all that's needed to overcome the effects of alcohol. In truth, time is the only way to get alcohol out of the system. If a friend of yours has been drinking, he or she shouldn't drive. There are steps you can take to keep a friend alive. 1
* Be proactive. Talk with your friends before they go out. Pick a designated driver, arrange for a sober driver to pick you up, or bring enough money for a cab or public transportation.
* Politely, but firmly, tell them you cannot let them drive home because you care. The first time you do this will be the toughest, but your actions could save your friend's life or that of an innocent victim. 1
* Drive your friend home. You're having a party and one of your friends has had too much to drink and should not drive. To be sure your friend arrives home safely, you can drive him or her yourself, if you haven't also been drinking. 2
* Call a cab. If you can't drive your friend home, you can call a cab. You may want to pay the fare in advance. That's one way to show you really care. 2
* Have your friend sleep over. Asking a guest to sleep over is another good way to keep a friend from driving. You won't have to drive and your friend won't have to return the next day for the car. 2
* Take the keys away. Here are some hints on how to get the keys from a drunken person before he or she can drive: 3
o Be calm. Joke about it. Make light of it.
o Make it clear that you're doing him a favor by taking their keys.
o Find the keys while he is distracted and take them away. They'll probably think they've lost them and will be forced to let someone else drive.
o If it is a close friend, be soft and calm. Speak to him or her privately and suggest that they let someone else drive, or take a cab or a bus.
o If it is a good friend, spouse, or loved one, refuse to get in the car with them. Tell him or her you will ride with someone else, take public transportation, or walk.
o If you don't know the person well, speak to their friends and ask them to help get the keys.
o If possible, do not embarrass the person or be confrontational.
* Whatever you do, don't give in. 4 About one-third (32%) of persons of driving age have been with a friend who may have had too much to drink to drive safely, including half of those under age 30. Most of these (80%) tried to stop the friend from driving and were successful in preventing the impaired person from driving about 75% of the time. Friends don't let friends drink and then drive. In the morning, you'll have a safer, and maybe an even closer, friend. 5
