10TH ANNUAL MEDICAL MARIJUANA BENEFIT CONCERT
AT TOBACCO ROAD
HOSTED BY
PLOPPY PALACE PRODUCTIONS

On Saturday, January 19, 2008 Ploppy Palace Productions and Tobacco Road will be hosting the 10th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert to raise funds for FL NORML's (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) medical marijuana campaign and the protection of patients' rights.  As part of this four stage extravaganza, some of South Florida's top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together for patients' and physicians' right to use medical cannabis.

As a testament to the diversity of supporters for this cause, there will be a broad variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, reggae, folk, vocal harmonies, hip-hop, funk, experimental, tribal rhythms, world beat fusion, psychedelic grooves and various interactive jams.

Marijuana has proven therapeutically useful in treating numerous medical conditions including muscle spasticity, arthritis, and the nausea related to AIDS and cancer chemotherapy. Currently there are 12 states that have laws allowing marijuana to be used as medicine.

Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert Crisis Update

Since you're a friend of Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert, I thought you should know that our future is in doubt. We've been putting on this 11 hour concert for 9 years, but whether we do the 10th Anniversary show next January is in real doubt! Let me tell you what the problem is.

The Concert is the brainchild of Flash, the owner-operator of The Wallflower Gallery. The Wallflower is the Music, Art, Performance Venue and Activism home to all our other activities. The Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert Series is our biggest annual event, bringing together over 1,000 people at the oldest watering hole in Miami, Tobacco Road. The Wallflower is 10 years old. The Concert is 10 years old. We have joined forces 8 years ago and have been inseparable ever since. Unfortunately, we have developed what people in the business world call an "Unconventional Business Plan." Because we've got art and other breakable stuff on the walls, we don't sell alcohol. Our crowds are usually sober, but not necessarily straight. It's very difficult to make a living when a venue doesn't sell booze.

We've been falling further and further behind in our rent and credit card payments. The Landlord was about to pull the plug. We have no lease and he's demanded that we catch up or leave, or get thrown out. When we first started asking our Friends for help, we were 5 months behind in rent and negotiating with our credit card companies. Now we are 4 months behind and still negotiating with the credit card companies.

If the Wallflower dies, so does our sponsorship of the Concert. Which means no more concert. No more home for the arts and the people who make that art. The Music, Spoken Word, Dance and much of the Visual Arts that makes the Benefit Concert tick is all made by local artists that have played, performed, or exhibited their work here at the Wallflower. We didn't just call up people and ask them if they would be good enough to perform at our Concert. They've all done their thing here before, in some cases, many times before. The reason we are the longest running Marijuana event in Florida is because of the quality of our total package. All of our performers are quality artists, all 40 acts and 10 speakers for 11 hours on four stages. It's a very big deal!

We are glad that you and about 44 hundred other people have asked to become our MySpace friends. Now, in this time of financial crisis, we must turn to our friends to get us over the hump. It is the only way we know of to keep up the artistic program at the Wallflower that supports the Marijuana Concert.

And we're not asking for much. If you are REALLY OUR FRIEND, send us $1. Just put it in an envelope and send it to:

The Wallflower Gallery
10 N.E. 3rd St.
Miami, Fl 33132

If you want to send more, we won't discourage you. If you want to use your Pay Pal account. Just click on the "Make a Donation" button over the BIG PURPLE FLOWER!

But send a DOLLAR! ONE LOUSY DOLLAR from all our friends would pay for a bit over 3 months rent, and get us over the crisis. Just ONE LOUSY FUCKING DOLLAR! (pardon my language, but I'm trying to save the Wallflower, the mother of your Medical Marijuana Concert.) DO IT FOR YOUR MOTHER!

Put your money where your mouth is!

Current mood:  hopeful
As we continue to prepare for the 9th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert at Tobacco Road on Saturday, January 20, 2007, we are connecting with people from all across the nation who are concerned with medical marijuana.

By looking at the Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert Series as a component in a larger movement, we are able to facilitate a gathering of energy in many ways - through personal conversation, the internet, business involvement and the residual relationship that are developed around this event. Within this context, it does not matter if people are close enough to South Florida to travel to the show or even if people are of age to attend the event, everyone who believes in medical marijuana can participate in this campaign.

Through the internet and especially with MySpace, everyone can promote and help to make the show part of a national beacon for drug law reform. It will take the nation to wake up and realize that persecuting sick people who use medical marijuana needs to be stopped in order for the real change to be established.

As we all saw in the 2000 election, Florida is a pivotal state when in comes to politics. The Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert is working to establish a more progressive base for drug law reform and other liberal issues. To paraphrase a notion, it takes a nation united to heal a nation. Now we need to reach out beyond ourselves to make real changes on a significant scope.

I would like to encourage everyone to direct people to the Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert's page and become Friends. In addition, it would be very much appreciated if the Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert could be featured in your "top 8" - this way other people can see your support of medical marijuana.

In the coming weeks, we will have banners that can be posted and comment graphics prepared. We will begin to spread these around as soon as they are ready.

In addition, there will be a PayPal button that will allow people to purchase tickets and make contributions to the event.

Since this is a fundraiser for FL NORML, we are working to generate as much money as possible to support the medical marijuana campaign in Florida.

Let's see what we can do together.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you for your effort.

Hope all's well.

Enjoy

As part of this four stage extravaganza, some of South Florida's top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together for patients' and physicians' right to use medical cannabis.

As a testament to the diversity of supporters for this cause, there will be a broad variety of musical styles including rock, reggae, folk, hip-hop, funk, experimental, tribal rhythms, world beat fusion, Hatian, Traditional Peruvian, psychedelic grooves and various interactive jams.

Johnny Dread, Sweetbone, Jahfe, Kuyayky, Aurapool, Out OfThe Anonymous, Addax, Day Music Died, The Oski Foundation, Under No Order, Carl Ferrari & Friends, The Tribe, Val C. Wisecracker, Robby Hunter, Mike Matthews, Charissa Johnson, Andrew Vait, ZP Tepi, January, Jon Ryczek, Outereach, Brimstone127, Anodize and more will be showcasing original music.

In addition, the TranZenDance Dance Company, Shri-Shambhala Tribe and other dancers will be performing a variety of dance and movement pieces to energetic, rhythmic percussion and ambient tones.

As an extra feature, Lumonics Light Museum will be presenting a special video projection showcase.

Irvin Rosenfeld and Elvy Musikka, legal medical marijuana patients, will be describing their experiences with obtaining his medicine through the federal government.

The 9th Annual Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert will also feature a selection of community speakers who will present information about the issues including Toni Latino from Florida NORML.

FL NORML, Emerge Miami, Miami-Dade Green Party, the Improvised Action Collective and various other organizations will have informational booths with literature and handouts to help educate about community issues and the medical marijuana campaign in Florida.

The event will work to raise funds and awareness for FL NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) medical marijuana campaign and the protection of patients' rights. Previously, a person's right to use medical necessity as a defense to marijuana charges has been upheld by several appeals courts in Florida. Marijuana has proven therapeutically useful in treating numerous medical conditions including muscle spasticity, arthritis, and the nausea related to AIDS and cancer chemotherapy. Currently there are 10 states that have laws allowing marijuana to be used as medicine.

In addition there will be vendors and small businesses promoting and selling their merchandise, including The Wallflower Gallery and selected independent corporations
