Help ARFF Say "Adios" to Circus Vazquez!

Circus Vazquez, also known as Circo Hermanos Vázquez, is a traveling circus that has a history of animal cruelty and human safety violations.

Tiger Abuse. Circus Vazquez has been cited numerous times by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for failing to provide adequate space for tigers. In March 2008, a tiger with the show was attacked and mauled to death by one or more of the five other tigers she had been crammed into a small cage with.

Circus Shut Down. In April 2008, Los Angeles Animal Services shut down Circus Vazquez’s elephant and tiger acts, which at the time were run by infamous animal abuser Will Davenport, due to permit violations and Davenport's record of Animal Welfare Act violations.

Rampages. In October 2001, two elephants rampaged during a Circus Vazquez performance at a church in North Carolina. The elephants suffered cuts and bruises and caused an estimated $75,000 in damages. This year the circus is touring with three elephants from The Hanneford Family Circus. In 1990, one of these elephants crushed a circus worker to death at Fort Lauderdale's Swap Shop flea market.

Help Kick Animal Circuses Out of Broward County Schools!

For-profit circus promoters are
committed to luring schoolchildren with field trips, ticket giveaways and other
promotions. For children, animal acts are a detrimental example of our duty to
conserve and respect fellow species.  School
Boards have the opportunity to act responsibly by adopting a policy not to
support circuses with animal acts.

Please join the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida
in our request to the Broward School Board for the County to adopt a policy NOT to support animal circuses.

BROWARD COUNTY (FL) residents, please sign the petition by clicking this text!!!

ACTION ALERT!!!!

The pet industry, and their lobbyists in Washington, D.C., are working hard to weaken House Resolution 2811, an important bill that would halt the import, export and commercial trade in pythons. We need your help TODAY to counter the voices of python breeders and pet shop owners.

H.R. 2811 will be discussed tomorrow (Wednesday) in the House Judiciary Committee. The following U.S. Representatives from south Florida are members of this committee.

Please call both members, urge them to support H.R. 2811 and to oppose any amendments that would weaken the bill.

Florida residents:  Make sure that you mention you are calling from Florida.

Contact:

• Congressman Thomas J. Rooney
Phone: (202) 225-5792

• Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Phone: (202) 225-7931

Please also contact the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and the ranking Republican member, and ask for their support of H.R. 2811.

Explain that this bill is very important to Florida residents concerned about animal welfare and protecting Florida's fragile environment.

Contact:

• Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), Committee Chair
Phone: (202) 225-5126

• Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX), Ranking Member
Phone: (202) 225-4236

Thank you!

Mark your calendars!
Please plan to join ARFF outside the Miss Florida USA pageant finals on Saturday, July 18 at Broward Community College's Bailey Hall in Davie -- to protest the pageant's lead sponsor, the Fur Information Council of America.

When:  Saturday July 18th, 2009
Time: 6:00PM -7:30PM
Location:
Bailey Concert Hall, Broward Community College, 3501 South West Davie Road, Davie
(ARFF will meet at the Main Entrance).

An ugly side of the Miss Florida USA/Miss Florida Teen USA Pageants

On July 18, 2009 contestants from around the state will gather to compete for the title of Miss Florida USA, and ARFF will be there to greet them. What will the lucky winners of the pageant be entitled to? The skin of a dead animal.

The Fur Information Council of America (FICA) is a long-time sponsor of Miss Florida USA and its sister pageant, Miss Florida Teen USA.* The Miss Florida USA website features contestants modeling fur coats designed by FICA, who claim fur is “the fabric of choice.” Those who wear fur trim and fur coats are certainly making a choice—to have the blood of mink, foxes and other animals on their hands.

With more than enough warm and beautiful alternatives available, the fur industry’s brutal slaughter of millions of animals each year is needless. Furthermore, Miss Florida USA’s continued support of this barbaric trade is unacceptable and brings shame to the pageant as well as the participants.

You Can Help

Please join ARFF's protest, listed above, and also contact Miss Florida USA/Miss Florida Teen USA to let them know that you are disappointed that the Fur Information Council of America is a sponsor of the pageants. Ask them not to include fur in future pageants.

Contact:
Grant & Mary Lou Gravitt, Pageant Producers
Miss Florida USA / Miss Florida Teen USA
2040 Sherman Street
Hollywood, FL 33020
Phone: (954) 924-4949
Fax: (954) 924-4980
E -mail: telair@aol.com

*Fur is not included in rival pageants, such as Miss Florida and Miss Florida Outstanding Teen, or the Miss Florida US International and Miss Teen Florida World pageants.

Thank you!!!

Teach children compassion and respect for animals

Join ARFF to demonstrate against the "Rodeo for Youth" in Davie. Events at the rodeo, such as bull riding and team roping, are violent activities that display and encourage brutal treatment of animals. At the rodeo, children see animals terrorized and harmed, seemingly with adult approval.

Date: Thursday, June 25
Time: 10:00am
Location: Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road, Davie (map). We will meet at the main entrance on Davie Road.

Promoting compassion in your community
June 22nd, 2009 by admin

Local politics is not for everyone, but if you have the courage to approach elected officials with an idea to help animals, the stubbornness to follow-up on your meeting or correspondence, and the patience to sit through city or county commission meetings that can be excruciatingly long, then you can make a big difference for animals in your community.*

Last week there were three great examples of local government…

Alleged cat killer had been encouraged to cut open cats in school
June 16th, 2009 by admin
On Saturday night, 18-year-old Tyler Weinman was arrested as a suspect in a spree of mutilation and killings of cats that has terrified residents in the Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay communities of Miami-Dade County since early May. At least 19 dead cats have been discovered. Many of the cats were found with their bellies cut open and their organs pulled out; other cats had been skinned.

In court yesterday it was revealed…

Today is the first day of the 2009 hurricane season. Do you have a plan in place to ensure your companion animal’s safety in the event of a hurricane?

Last month, Hillsborough County announced two new pet-friendly hurricane shelters (there are now four in the county). Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita explained the importance of…
