Rocky Mountain Rollergirls bring derby to a brand new locale
On April 14th, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' home teams—the Red Ridin' Hoods and the Sugar Kill Gang—hit the road for Cheyenne, Wyoming, in order to bring the hard-hitting action of flat track roller derby that Denver and the rest of Colorado loves to a state that had never before witnessed it. Arriving at the Taco John's Events Center unsure of what to expect, the Sugars were armed with new skaters Edie I. Mean, Annia Late-her, and Ho J. Simpson to play the first and only game between RMRG's two home teams this season. Though Wyoming was unfamiliar with what was in store for them, the house was packed as the first period brought a close score of the Hoods at 35, Sugars at 23.
These teams last played one another at last year's Halloween bout where the Hoods took the win by a significant margin. While they didn't actually face off during the March 3rd round robin, however, the Sugars were able to walk away winners with the largest number of points, leaving the Hoods in second place. It's no secret that the Sugars have some great jammers while the Hoods are very blocker-heavy, so a match between these teams could go either way. The second period, however, gave the Hoods a sizable lead with some major point-scoring, including an eight-point jam by Anne Shank. Halftime saw the Hoods at 70, Sugars at 36.
Cheyenne liked what they were seeing, and RMRG had gained quite a number of fans across the state line before the night was through. There was still one more period before the night's end, however, and both teams were prepared to make the last 20 minutes their best. Skaters in both pink and red were serving up hits that were knocking their opponents to the floor, and jammers like C-Roll pushed to close the point gap in the final moments. Even so, the Hoods were able to hold onto their lead up to the end, with a final score of Hoods 113, Sugars 57.
RMRG would like to thank Cheyenne and Taco Johns Events Center for hosting us and putting on a great bout. We hope that the roller derby fever we have will catch on with many of our neighbors up north!

Hoods and Snipers pair up for a rematch
After the round robin season opener in March that saw a face-off between teams from both the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls and the Pikes Peak Derby Dames from Colorado Springs, the Red Ridin' Hoods invited PPDD's Candy Snipers back for a full-on rematch. These two home teams bouted one another only briefly at the end of the night a month ago with the Hoods scoring more points, but April 7th gave the Snipers three full periods to take back the win. Three new skaters—Smashbox, Drew Burywhores, and Mistress Tarable—joined the Hoods after their previousl stingy lineup, promising to give the Snipers a run for their money. The first 20 minutes put the Hoods at 34, Snipers at 12.
Though the Snipers came in to the second period behind by 22 points, the short break gave them a chance to rethink their strategy and come back strong. Hungry for a victory and stepping up their blocking, the Snipers brought the gap in points closer by the time halftime rolled around, leaving the Hoods at 59, Snipers at 40.
While the Hoods still had the lead, the Snipers were making a strong comeback. The Springs girls were able to score in every jam of the third period, bringing their points up significantly. Even with the Snipers' awesome fight to the finish, however, it was no match for jams like She Who Cannot Be Named's 11 points and Smashbox's 9 in under two minutes each. The final score: Hoods 98, Snipers 77.
The Hoods and RMRG would like to give a big THANK YOU to the Snipers and all of the Pikes Peak girls—we love skating with you and are proud of the great league you have become! Thank you as well to all of our fans and supporters that make Colorado such a great place for flat-track roller derby!

Current mood: impressed
The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls' 2007 season started with a bang as RMRG's Red Ridin' Hoods and Sugar Kill Gang took on the Pikes Peak Derby Dames' Candy Snipers and Danger Dolls in a round robin to determine Colorado's best home team. Each team from RMRG played those from PPDD in four 15-minute periods instead of the normal three, and whoever walked away with the most points at the end took home the title. The bout was packed and with the additions of the party bus to give fans a ride to and from the game as well as bleachers to offer more seating, the sellout crowd made it clear that the off-season had left RMRG fans hungry for more action!
These four teams played a similar type of game back in July with the Hoods taking the victory, but the Sugars and the Pikes Peak girls were more than ready to fight for the lead spot this time around. Period one brought the Danger Dolls up against the Hoods, who were playing short with only eight skaters. Even with the girls in red with such a stingy roster, they were still able to gain a sizable lead. Final score: Hoods 33, Dolls 12.
The second period saw completely new skaters on the track with the Sugars taking on the Snipers. The Sugars' were heavy in the jammer department, which was essential for such a point-driven competition. With great skaters like Frida Beater, Ida Hustler and Penny Payne racking up the points, the final score for this match showed an impressive lead with the Sugars at 45, Snipers at 13.
After a brief rest at halftime the Snipers geared up again, this time to take on the Hoods. Each team put up a fight, knowing this was their last chance to gain as many points as possible to walk away with a victory. The Hoods skated away with 34 to the Snipers' 14.
The night came to a close with the Sugars and the Dolls facing off in a final attempt at piling up the points. This match ended with the Sugars at 46, Dolls at 9.
RMRG held up their home turf with the Sugars in first place at 91, the Hoods in second with 67, the Snipers coming in third with 27 and the Dolls' ending with 21. Get ready for a rematch when the Hoods take on The Snipers in a full bout April 7th and the Sugars face the Dolls on October 6th, both at the Bladium!

Current mood: accomplished
The home team grudge between the Red Ridin' Hoods and the Sugar Kill Gang came to a close this season with the October 28th Spook-n-Roll. While the Sugars put up a good fight all year the Hoods managed to stay on top, regardless of the major lineup changes each team faced throughout the season. This bout saw a number of new players - Anne Shank, Sin Smitty, and Dr. Dread for the Hoods and Ferret Fawcett, Mama KiCass and Frida Beater for the Sugars.
As period one began, no one knew where this game could end up. With three new skaters per team and a number of former favorites missing in action, it was anyone's guess as to whether the not-so-sweet Sugars or the menacing Hoods would leave the track as tonight's champions. The game began with many of the skaters dressed for the holiday, including She Who Cannot Be Named in a cape, Zoom Zoom Zetta resembling a female KISS member, and most of the Hoods rotting away as zombies. The Hoods' gory getups were intimidating enought to gain a steady lead, with a score of 47 to the Sugars' 27 by the end of 20 minutes.
When the second period rolled around, the new recruits on both the Hoods and Sugars were in on the intense rivalry between these two teams. The Sugars retaliated with some notable jams, such as Ida Hustler's score of 12 points in less than two minutes. Even with such a great effort on the Sugars' part, the Hoods' defense remained as strong as ever, leaving the Sugars with five scoreless jams in each of the first two quarters. Halftime began with the Hoods at 109 and the Sugars trailing with 74.
While the Hoods were in control, the Sugars weren't ready to throw in the towel just yet. With a Halloween sweet tooth, however, the Hoods were ready to satisfy their craving with Sugar remains, staying ahead and finishing the bout with a score of 154 to 113.
The 2006 seson ended with the Hoods as the undefeated champions. Now it's time for our league to play nice - at least until next year...
