Now that I've been made into a trading card, not that I have one mind you or even knew I was being turned into one, I've done just about all I've set out to do. Now I'm off to travel the world and be a crazy person who talks about the time I fought in the UFC.
Doh! I have to wait til the action figure comes out... guess I'll be in Canada on April 18 after all...
So I'm gonna head to 7-11 and buy some Topps trading cards. Here's how it will go.
"Chuck, chuck, chuck, chuck, forrest, chuck, diego, chuck, randy and chuck, randy, chuck in action, randy, chuck. Doh."
"Nother pack please."

So yeah... long story short I got a new Slider phone from T-Mobile. The thing is a piece of crap. But it was fine for about 2 or 3 months. Now it shuts down during the day. At random times. This kicks all my text messages and phone numbers and then I receive 300 texts that are approx 5 months old. So I've been driving to a place and my phone shuts off. Lose the address because I had that in text. And I can't even call the guy because his number was on my phone.
So T-Mobile says if I sign up for another 2 years I can buy whatever phone I want. To which I say no, I just spent $200 on a phone that doesn't work. Give me $200 credit to a new phone and I'll be happy. No can do. But they'll send me a new Slider. If I pay for shipping. Oh, and I have to send mine to them first so I'd be without a phone for about 2 weeks. So the rep I'm talking to puts me on hold then I get cut off. Beautiful. Whatever happened to helping a customer? I've been one for years. Always pay my bill. I don't want a favor, I want what I paid for. So I've sent them an email as a last ditch effort for them to make good on their end of the deal.
"I have been a loyal customer for several years now. My dissatisfaction has arisen with my Slider phone. I'm now on my second phone and third battery. I'm writing this because after my 3rd phone call to T-Mobile I was cut off and I've had it. My phone shuts off randomly and loses all my text messages and phone numbers. It does this up to 3 times a day. I do not want another Slider phone as they are obviously defective. However, that's not even an option as I've been told I have to send mine in before I can even get one in return. I cannot go a week to 10 days without my phone. I conduct all of my business on my cel. I also do not want to purchase another phone with a two year contract. I just did that with the Slider. Now my $200 or whatever I paid, is a waste as I have a phone that does not work. I consider this a breech of contract in that the contract states I pay for service and I get reliable service in return. All I want is a phone that works and to be treated as a customer with a problem that needs to be repaired. This customer service has been incredibly poor. Please contact me with a resolution asap or I'll be forced to take my business elsewhere.
Nathan Quarry"
So I'm writing this blog to vent my frustrations and thought everyone could post their big bitches about soulless corps. that crap on the customers that keep them in business.
One other, I signed up with Verizon/Direct tv home package of internet, phone and satellite tv. Verizon came out and hooked up everything. Two weeks later, Direct tv came out and said they couldn't see their satellite so I can have Direct tv. Ok, no biggie. So cancel everything. But they can't do that. They're separate companies. Oh, it takes one call to set it up but many calls to cancel everything. And Verizon is charging me for the phone service I didn't use for the weeks they had it installed before Direct tv came out and told me I couldn't get it. Unbelievable. If anyone works for these companies can you tell me why we all get treated like this?
So I was pretty pissed and say what horrible service I've gotten and etc. How I feel I'm being raped as a customer and I can't believe that companies in America can treat us like this. So she says, "Sorry to hear that Mr. Quarry. Good luck with your fighting." And hangs up. Doh. Good times....

Hey all, I've got a buddy doing a couple Ebay auctions for me with the proceeds going to my little girls college education. No one in my family has gone to college and no one on her mother's side has gone to college so that is my goal for her. I'm auctioning off some personal gear from the first season of the Ultimate Fighter. So check it out and if so inclined, feel free to bid. I've been selling quite a few things through my friends Ebay store and so far have raised $1700 for her education. Yay us!
If this goes well, I could do more... of course I'm running out of cool stuff but have tons of worthless crap... I mean... Cool Quarry collectibles!

Moving forward on the Sports Lab.

Starting small right now but damn, I'm happy with the coaching staff we've got. The best in Oregon under one roof

Monday and Wednesday

6:00-7:15 Ju Jitsu with Eben Kaneshiro, black belt under John Ramirez and John Ouano. Worlds, Pan Am, Grappler's Quest and NAGA competitor. Also has an extensive MMA record of 12-3 competing in King of the Cage, Pacific Extreme Combat and Garden Island Cage Match.

Tuesdays and Thursdays

6:00-7:15 Muay Thai Kickboxing with Jeremy Wijers. Someone I've worked with quite a bit. Over 20 years of kickboxing experience. If you've never worked with a master of Muay Thai this will be an experience. At 140 pounds he kicks harder than I do at 205. Really an outstanding coach with a great understanding of MMA also.

Monday-Thursday

7:30-8:45 MMA with head coach Greg Thompson. Greg really developed quite a following at his last gym, teaching 16 classes a week. Now he's excited to be able to continue following his passion for coaching. We are in talks right now with a black belt in Judo and may be expaning our program so that twice a week we will have Judo in place of MMA. Most likely on the nights we have our Ju Jitsu.

We've really been blessed with getting some incredible coaches under one roof. We're starting small with the classes offered, but will be looking to expand in the near future. Oh, and don't forget we've got Phil Claud, my personal strength and conditioning coach, here at the Lab. He's going to be running MMA conditioning classes, specifically designed to get people in shape for their chosen sport, whether it be MMA, Ju Jitsu, Kickboxing or the hobbyist.

Come down this week and check it out!

The rumors are true. We're moving forward with the MMA program at the Sports Lab in north Portland.

How did this come about? I've been training at the Lab for most of the year now. It has truly been instrumental in my comeback. The first day I was there, Coach Claud put me through an evaluation. He was able to point out my strengths and more importantly, my weeknesses. His training has been incredible. His workouts have been sports specific for what I need but he has a background of working with professional athletes for many years in many different sports. On any given day you can expect to see pro football players to track and field athletes to an entire lacross team. I was the first MMA athlete Coach Claud has worked with and since our meeting he's developed a passion for the sport. So he approached me about running an MMA program at the Lab. He asked what I would want at a gym I trained at. Basically the answer is simple. The best coaches and the best training atmosphere. So that's what we're working towards.

A lot of what we're striving for is still in the works so I can't list everything but here's what we've got so far.

MMA Coach - Greg Thompson     You may have seen him in my corner for my last fight. He's most known for his coaching at Team Quest where he was teaching up to 16 classes a week. He has been an incredible part in getting me ready for my fights. A great person and a great coach. It's not often you find someone who looks out for your interests ahead of their own and I can honestly say Greg is one of those people.

Thai Boxing - Jeremy Wijers     I've worked with Jeremy quite a bit over the past year and I can honestly say he's an incredible coach. You can check out his current website at www.portlandthaiboxing.com. I can't say enough good things about Coach Wijers. He's fought down in Thailand. He's been training kickboxing for 20 years. And he is a man that really makes me appreciate the strength of a kickboxing game. At about 145 pounds he kicks harder than I do. And we've got him. Two nights a week to start off with he's going to bring his game to the Lab.

Conditioning - Phil Claud     To have a coach like this training the athletes and students is really incredible. His depth of knowledge has helped me so much. His balance training and core development has just amazed me. And just the simple things such as rolling on a foam roller after every workout is invaluable.

Ju Jitsu - We're in talks with a few people here and will get it nailed down in the next couple weeks. Rest assured it's going to be a deep program with coaches I want to train with.

Judo - Same thing here. Talking to a few people about running a program at the Lab. Again, someone I want to train with. Someone who's going to improve my game. Judo has been proven in the octagon and I think it should be an important part of everyone's MMA game.

For now that's it. We're starting slow and small. Our goal is to underpromise and overdeliver. Right now just 4 nights a week. 2 MMA, 2 Jits, 2 Kickboxing and 2 Judo. And conditioning workouts. I'm going to be an assisstant coach, basicaly helping out. I've found that trying to commit to coaching while pursuing my own fight career is difficult so I'm going to be doing seminars and individual coaching.

This is the beginning. We think very soon we're going to expand from our small half of the building and take over another 6,000 sq ft to really get the program running. By that time we'll hopefully have Jeremy over full time, have a wrestling and boxing program and an MMA competition team up and running as well as a kids program and a few other things we're working on. We're working to build a world class facility that is not in competition with other gyms. We want to work with other gyms. We'll all get better that way.

The Sports Lab's easy to find in North Portland. It's directly on the Max line and has been a neighborhood staple for years.

And it's new myspace page is in my top 8

Training starts January 7th, hope to see you there. And I'll be posting more info as we get so more of the details ironed out.

Saturday, November 04, 2006

Well, imagine my surprise when I open myspace last Thursday and am greated with many congrats of my recovery and upcoming fight. First thoughts were, "hmm... why didn't anybody tell me I was fighting?"

Through some friends and networking I've found my supposed interview. When I first heard of this I figured someone had found an old interview and reposted it. Now that I've read it, wow, this is just a blatant lie. It amazes me how some people have so little of a life that they will fabricate a fake interview of someone. Geeze. Get a life. Or at least do your research.

For the record, I'm not fighting in December. I don't know who Brock Larson is. And while I thank all for the condolences of my father, he passed about 4 years ago. Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but it's so crazy I can't help it. I had friends calling and wanting to know why I didn't fill them in! Even a coach asked about it!

So here's the "interview".

Nate Quarry is back!!!!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.boxinginsider.com/mma/fig...2860&zoneid=13

After being on a hiatus from the UFC and not fighting in almost a year, Nate "The Rock" Quarry returns to the octagon in December to take on fast rising youngster Brock Larson at UFC 66.

Recently BoxingInsider.com caught up with Quarry to talk about his fight, his personal life, and his long-awaited return to Mixed Martial-Arts.

BoxingInsider: First off Nate, tell our readers about your up-coming fight on December 30th.

Nate Quarry: I will be fighting Brock Larson. He's a young kid looking for his opportunity so you know he's going to come strong and fast.

Boxing Insider: Have you had any chance to study him at all during your training?

Nate Quarry: I saw his last few fights from Extreme Challenge and his fight last year with Jon Fitch. He's a tough fighter with a slick ground-game. He also never quits during any of his matches and has never been stopped in a fight.

BoxingInsider: Since you've took such a long break from MMA, do you think being non-active for the past year will have any effect on you for this fight?

Nate Quarry: No, but the last year has been rough though. I injured my back right after the fight with Rich, I wasn't healthy enough to fight until late August. But that's when my father passed away as well. So I've been dealing with a lot of issues lately, but I think I've got everything behind me now.  (Wow! That's a pretty fast recovery from a spinal fusion! A month and a half after major surgery! I rule... I'm inserting here.)

BoxingInsider: Would you like another shot at the title or a chance to redeem your loss against Rich someday?

Nate Quarry: [Laughs] Oh I'd love that, but that won't be for a long time. I've just got to concentrate on my up-coming fight with Brock Larson, and then take it one fight at a time after that.

BoxingInsider: Well I wish you the best of luck in your up-coming fight in December. Would you like to say anything to your fans before we head out?

Nate Quarry: I would just like to thank all of my fans who have stuck with me and supported me the whole way. Stand strong. (And I would never say, "Stand strong." That just sounds lame. I would say "Fortitudine Vincimus" or something cool like that.)

Me again, as was the insert. Wow. Just goes to show you that the internet is one crazy place. I once recieved a friend request from Randy Couture. So I sent a message saying, hey Randy if this is you, gimme a call. I knew it was a fake but it was hilarious to see the wanker accuse me of not being me.

Now, more importantly, when am I fighting again? Will I fight again? Well, things are looking good right now. I'm getting stronger every day. Haven't been able to do any grappling but I'm lifting, doing a little cardio and hitting mitts with a new boxing coach. And of course I've got my coach Robert Follis helping to expand my game. And my girlfriend has been doing her best to keep me fed and keep me from going too far too fast. That is a task in itself. So.... Long story short... We'll see. Fortunately I've had some sponsors step up and make it possible for me to pay my bills in this tight time. Yok'd who's clothes rival that of Affliction. Metabolic Adaptation who have the most incredible supplements I've ever taken. And my boy Levi who watches out for me too.

So don't count me out. Not yet. I'll be back if just to show the world that with enough drive and determination, even a broken back can't keep you from following your dreams.

Rock

As usual, not edited to give people something to bitch about if that's their thing. :-)

Current mood:  determined

That being said, ouch.

Spinal fusion for those that hadn't heard. An incredibly invasive surgery. And I'm still recovering so that's why I haven't posted for a while. Wanted to be able to give some positive news. :-)

Well, the surgery went as good as it possibly could. Had it down in Vegas, performed by a Dr. Thalgott, assissted by Ray and Rober and even had Dr. Sanders there, who operated on my ankle during TUF 1. A truly incredible crew. And the surgery was cutting edge.

Basically they came in from my left side just below my short ribs and ran a cylinder up to the shredded disk. Through the cylinder they chewed up what was left of the disk and sucked it out. Then they put a new prosthetic spacer disk in it's place. It puts my vertabrae back in alignment and at the proper distance from each other. Then from the back they cut me open right at the disk spot and screwed the two vertabrae together. And another cut was made just above my right rear hip so they could scrape some bone material off and put it all around the prosthetic.

If I would have had this surgery just a year ago it would have been twice as bad. But with the crew I had it just went great. Took about 4 hours, about half the time it does for most other crews. So what can I say? The surgery went great.

Now for the horror story. Thalgott and his crew did everything they could to make me as comfortable as possible and do a great job. Unfortunately the hospital Thalgott had to use wasn't on the same page. Well, that's not entirely true. Some of the nursing staff was outstanding. Some.... Not so outstanding.

Valley View Hospital for 5 days. The first nurse I had seemed to have trouble keeping time. I was on a cocktail of painkillers. Morphine on a push button, oxycotton and perkasets and shots of demerol. Every two hours I was to get the perkasets or a shot of demerol. Over and over my nurse would forget my pills or shots. So I'd go 4 hours without anything and then she'd come in and say, "Oh yeah, guess I forgot. I'll just give you both now." Yikes. I'd go from extreme pain to being completely gone. But my next nurse was amazing. Made sure I got everything I needed just right. And when she said her shift was over I begged her to write down the medication schedule for the next nurse. Which she did. Which the next nurse proceeded to erase as soon as she started. Yikes.

On Thursday began physical therapy. Keep in mind I had the surgery on Wednesday. So the day after I'm up and walking around. That was really the goal. A true credit to the surgeon. But the first therapist.... Geeze. She walks in and says, "Ok, it's time to go for a walk. Let's go." So I start to roll over to the edge of the bed, I was told by my surgeon to roll like a log. After a back surgery they don't want you bending at the waist for about a month. As I'm scooting she grabs me about the hip and shoulder and yanks me to the edge. At which point I'm just screaming in pain. She then throws my feet off the side of the bed causing me to launch upright again screaming in pain and I grabbed her about the shoulder to keep my self from falling off. Her response? "Don't grab onto me!!" My response, "Could you please tell me what you want." "I just told you!!" "Could you tell me before I do something to upset you?" And her response to that was, "That's it!! Lay back down!! I'm not going to deal with you!!" Oh my God. I looked at her in my haze of conciousness and said, "Please... Have some compassion. I just had major surgery. I'm sorry if I've done something to upset you. Please be patient with me." To which she said, "Fine. Come on." Far be it from me to judge her, but damn. Why would you choose a profession in which all you do is help people with an attitude like that?

I'm jumping all around here with the time schedule but I'm trying to insert the stories and finish them all at once. :-) Wednesday night I got a roommate. He was a man who was apparently moving a large oak table and tripped and it fell on him and broke his back. Crushed a vertabrae. For some reason there was no one who could perform surgery on him for 4 days. It was like being in one of those VA hospitals you see in the movies. Every few hours I'd hear this, "Ok, Mr.... We need to take a look at your back." "Ok, please be caref...YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" Grown man screaming at the top of his lungs. I felt so bad for him and his family. (You know, right now he's probably telling the exact same thing about his roommate (-: )

But what was the worst of it all? By far? Piss on the toilet seat. Constantly. Every time I went into the bathroom there was piss on the toilet seat. The nurses would dump out the bags from the catheters and get them all over the seat. Oh, and every time I was in the bathroom the nurses would knock and come right in. It was like, knock and open and then "Oh, sorry." Even when they would say the name of someone else they were looking for I would say, "No, not in here." And they'd come right in. "Oh, sorry."

Left the hospital on Sunday. Should really have stayed another day, but I couldn't deal with Valley View any more. It was about Tuesday though that I came out of my haze. Finally realized where I was. I had made it through the surgery and was at my hotel. I called a few friends to let them know the surgery had gone well. To my surprise they said I had already called them. I had no idea.

I wasn't allowed to eat the day before the surgery and I couldn't keep food down for about 4 days after the surgery. So I went without food for about 6 days. Not too big of a deal, I just lost a lot of weight. It's starting to come back now.

Started physical therapy last week. Real physical therapy, not just walking around. Stretching out the scar tissue and loosening up everything. The previous pain is pretty much gone. No more vertabrae scraping on each other. Now it's mostly surgery pain. That and muscles seizing up. That sucks. But it's better than it was.

Gotta thank Dr. Thalgott and Ray and Robert and Dr Sanders for such a great job. And my physical therapist Noah Goodwill and his wife who's getting me back in shape, Christine. And my sponsors who have really stepped up in my time of need, Yok'd Clothing, Metabolic Adaptation, Xooma Worldwide and my friend Levi. Without all of you believing in me, this road would be a lot harder. And of course all the fans of the sport, and me, who have sent me kind words of support.

Like I said at the beginning, you can't complain about the journey if you're happy with your eventual destination. And don't think I'm writing all this to get sympathy, really most of it is written with me laughing. Especially the piss on the seat part. Not so much the first physical therapist. True dat. But really I'd been getting a lot of messages asking what the story is and I wanted to fill everyone in.

So that's about it. Fight again? Not sure yet. But it's looking good. Just need to finish healing. The prosthetic put in my back is cutting edge and they tell me my back is going to be stronger than ever when I'm done. So keep sending me your good thoughts and I'll keep working on getting back in the cage to get punched for your amusement. :-)

Oh, and as usual, not proofread to give all a y'all something to rip on if that's your thing.

Surgery went well. Posting this off my phone. I was told by the surgeons that it went as well as it possibly could. I will give more in depth later. Thanks for all the positive energy that has been sent my way. The road to recovery will be long and a hard one. I can't wait to get on it.
