first off, we need to get the word out about the Eric Mikula Benefit Concert at Belle Vernon Area High School.  We are really really trying to make this event successful for one of our best friends.  Personally, me and Eric went to high school and college together, are neighbors, have played on the same hockey teams, and basically hang out a lot together.  Watch hockey, play video games, talk about girls.  The point I am trying to make is that we have been really good friends for many years, so we're really putting a lot of effort into making this a successful event for him.

Some of the features of the night and reasons that you should go are going to be:

1. Punchline is playing

2. Other great legendary BV area bands are playing such as Logic (now members of Gene the Werewolf), Elephant (members of Wings of Azreal), and the Catastrophe (members of A week in july and Punchline).  All of these bands are Belle Vernon music legends.  These bands helped create a great scene that was here in which we all grew up in and loved.

3. Eric Starkey is going to perform his magic show.  So, yes, we have a professional magician there.  This ought to be really cool.  You can check him out at www.creativeconjuring.com

4. We are going to have lots of raffles.  The raffles are going to include Penguins tickets generously donated by Pete Sewchek, an iPod (great christmas gift if you already have one!), gift cards galore for places like Get Go, Best Buy, etc, and lots of baked goods!

5. The night is going to be like a big reunion for many of us, as many of the people that graduated over the years will be there.  I'm expecting to see a ton of people I havent seen in a while as well as many people that I get the pleasure of dealing with on a daily basis.

6. And obviously the most important reason is for Eric!  Its going to be great to be able to raise some money for his recovery and show all of our support for him.

Heres a little more info that we had posted around the Churchs this weekend in the bulletin...

Benefit Concert for Eric Mikula
On Friday November 28th, please join us for an all ages fundraising concert at Belle Vernon High School at 6:00pm to benefit Eric Mikula.  In late August, Eric was in a severe car accident in which he spent several weeks in the hospital (3 of which in the ICU) recovering from head trauma and broken ribs.  To make things worse, Eric was in the process of changing jobs and at the time was uninsured leaving behind great amounts of medical bills and no workers compensation

The concert will be headlined by the popular band Punchline (www.punchkids.com), and will also feature, The Victory Year (www.purevolume.com/thevictoryyear) as well as Logic, Elephant, and the Catastrophe.  In addition there will be plenty of food, games, and raffles.  Items being raffled off include Penguin tickets, Pirate tickets, Get Go Gift Cards, and an iPod.  There will also be a magician, Eric Starkey (www.creativeconjuring.com), performing as well.  Tickets are $8 for students (college and high school), $10 for non-students, and $12 at the door.  Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 412-323-1919.  Additional information can be found at www.druskyentertainment.com.

If you would still like to donate, but cannot attend the event, please contact JC Gallo (724-433-6116, jcgallo@dckww.com).

St. John’s Church next Sunday 4/13/08
Our priest and good friend, Father Bob Lubic aka "The Punk Priest" at our Church, St. John’s in Perryopolis, has been trying to get a band together to do masses at the church for sometime now.

So, we were asked if we would help out. And we said yes. The guy who is heading it up is a good friend of ours named Greg Capozzi. The guy is a really talented musician with has masters in music and everything. He took a bunch of the parts of the mass and some other songs and basically rearranged them to make them more contemporary and upbeat.

On Sunday 4/13/08, we are going to be debuting our new style mass and we are inviting anyone who would like to come out to celebrate with us. This is really going to be different from traditional church music, but believe this will really be inspiring and make the mass a little more appealing for some people. So, we hope to see you there. We’ll be at the 10:30 mass.

On Saturday night we were able to be a part of a show that benefited Feed Just One.  At the show, the girl who set it up, Emily, was able to raise over $800 for the organization.  So, we were very happy to be a part of the event and wanted to write a little information about Feed Just One to help get the word out and hopefully find some people that would want to get involved.  This information came from their website (see below).  We would encourage readers of this blog to seriously take this call for help into consideration.  Think about it...  We live in a nation where we are so blessed with so many things, one of such is food.  Many of us dont know what its like to have to struggle to even pay for the most basic of necessities.  With this in mind, we have the opportunity to make a change in this world, even if its only at a small scale.  So, see below, and see what you think, maybe you can help out and make a difference.  These are real problems and we need real people to make solutions.

THE NEED

Over 800 million people are starving worldwide.

A child dies every 5 seconds of hunger.

THE PROBLEM

Most aid programs currently available require a commitment of $35 a month that your average person either can't or isn't willing to commit to. Schools and orphanages are trying on their own with little or no aid and children are "lucky" to get 3 meals a week. It has been said that 5 meals a week would be a miracle.

THE SOLUTION

You can provide a meal to a starving child through Feed Just One for only 4 cents. One meal a day costs just 28 cents a week, $1.20 a month or $14.60 a year.

HOW WE DO IT

With the help of Feed My Starving Children, we are able to ship meals wherever they are needed in very large quantities for only 4 cents per meal.

1. Donors provide funds to FMSC who produces the meals for 15 cents a serving.

2. Volunteers pack the meals.

3. FMSC donates the meals to other organizations to distribute in the impoverished areas that need it the most. They receive the food for free, but must cover the entire shipping costs ($6-10,000US per shipment).

4. Feed Just One covers the shipping costs for as many shipments as possible in order to further the work of the local feeding programs in the foreign countries that have very limited funds.

5. Schools and orphanages are able to receive and distribute the meals to starving children at absolutely no cost to them.

6. A starving child has a meal to eat and becomes healthier, day by day, 4 cents at a time.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Spread the message! Tell everyone you know about Feed Just One and what they can do to help. Tell your friends, your family, your school, your church, your team, your band, your enemies, everyone! Post about it on your MySpace, Facebook, Virb, Purevolume, Xanga, Livejournal, Blog, anywhere!

2. Give! All of the publicity in the world doesn't do any good if we don't help anyone. How much? It doesn't really matter. Anything is better than nothing and everyone can give something. Remember it just costs $1.20 to feed someone for an entire month so just feed as many as you can. This is all about doing what you can and not worrying about what you can't.

3. Buy! Buying our shirts and stickers not only helps promote the cause when you wear them, but a large part of the purchase price goes directly towards meals. Each sticker that sells for only $1 will provide 2 weeks worth of meals and each shirt that sells for $15 will provide 3 months worth of meals.

FIRST GOAL

Our first goal is $8,000 to ship a 40 foot container of 270,864 meals. That's enough food to feed 742 people for an entire year! This will be so easy if everyone helps out. You don't want to miss out on being a part of this.

Check out this Saturday's Penguins game vs. the Carolina Hurricanes to hear The Victory Year's song "Chances, Scars, and Ups & Downs".  It will be played at the 6:30 pre-game show and right after the game going into the post-game show.

We are very excited about this because if you know us, you know that we watch (or tape, yes I know we may be a bit excessive) every Penguins game.
