For those who couldn’t make it a couple weeks ago, Nato Caliph and Earthworms completely tore Austin up during the annual South by Southwest Festival. F5 really held it down and rep’d St. Louis as best as we could. Met some amazing artists, made some great contacts and we are all total focused on the rest of 2008. In honor of the craziness that is SXSW, F5 offers this free download mixtape that was given out during that week. It was put together by Chicago’s DJ Pickel and features old and new F5 music. Everything from BNP to Hi Fidel to Nato. Take a listen. http://www.divshare.com/download/3987365-9e9And be sure to check out DJ Trog’s F5 Podcast. Remember to check out Nato and Earthworms on April 12th at The Bluebird w/ Animate Objects and Lovers in Arms from Chicago. Earthworms will be backed by a full band, THE 35s! (flyer below) DJ Crucial is at Gramophone every Thursday with Needles of course. Also take a listen to the latest Hi Fidel audio interview that you can stream directly from HurtMeSoul or www.f5records.com Be sure to pick up or download all the latest F5 material from Rockwell Knuckles, Hi Fidel, and our newest group Twilight Sentinels (Indianapolis) in addition to Nato and Earthworms. Its been a busy 8 months of us here at F5 and we are grateful for the support we are receiving locally and nationally. It has truly been a rewarding and eye opening time. Check out Soundslam.com’s review of Twilight Sentinels latest releaseShouts to Loudmouth, DJ Orion (Austin), Black Spade (who had a great SXSW show too) and be on the look out for another free download next week from our old friends at The Cooler.....Peace Berk

From Sentient Productions:
If you had any hint of doubt about the strength of the St. Louis underground Hip-Hop scene, let Nato Caliph's "Cipher Inside" suffocate the last of this doubt until it is no more. Once the real hip-hop enthusiast presses play, it's all over. From the very beginning, "Physics 720" unleashes a glimpse of the talent that laces the entire album. Once listeners plug into "Cipher Inside", they are introduced to a reawakening of sorts, as Caliph wrappes words around your head over and over again. Nato Caliph takes the true conscious and progressive mind on a social and spiritual journey, one that is both very intimate, yet seemingly reaching out across all boundaries.
"Cipher Inside" is much like an opus for the community in which Caliph lives, as well as the Hip-Hop community in general, reflecting true street stories while also tackling very personal issues that almost anyone can relate to. Nato strikes at the heart of the listener with passages such as "Why do we raise buildings faster than we raise children, then wonder why they grow up depressed and hide feelings?", consistently pushing fierce but sober comparisons right into your face.
The entire album provides an experience that is altogether satisfying and reveals lyrical expression that unarguably borders on a level of high giftedness. Track after track, the "Move" man displays impeccable timing, intelligent concepts and strong lyricism over soothing, well developed beats, easily surpassing the bar of what is expected of a top-quality Hip-Hop album. If you are searching to be inspired, I highly recommend picking up this joint, regardless of personal musical preference, as "Cipher Inside" is undoubtedly one of the best albums of the year. Cipher Inside includes 16 original tracks and features Dj Crucial, Lyfestile, MF Grimm, Hi-Fidel, Coultrain, Black Spade, Phact (of KTC), MF Mez, Bits N Pieces, E-Pi-C, Fly D-Ex, & Peace 1 Minute.

Check the Link Besides rapping for a stellar, relatively unknown St. Louis record label, L.A. resident Umar Rashid is a t-shirt designer, painter, and the author of a graphic novel for children, The Hunter and the Teardrop. According to a description, the book is "a moral tale about an interstellar hunter who kills all the great beasts in the universe, and one day finds he has nothing left to kill." For his latest collection at Taylor de Cordoba, Feathers revisits issues of imperialism and focuses on the fictitious "Frenglish" Emperor Nancy and the villainous Lord William. Dynamic, large-scale paintings as well as more precious works on paper are featured in this royally surreal exhibition. – Ashley Tibbits for Flavorpill L.A P.S If you get a chance, I'm in the Pacific Coast edition on New American Paintings( juried by MOCA curator Alma Ruiz) (73). It's $20 but there is a lot of good work in it. If interested, I believe most major bookstores carry it. -80

..>..>DIG THE EARTHWORMS Soulful hip-hop group Earthworms is reaching back to what many consider the golden era of hip-hop on its second CD, the new "Bottle Full of Bourbon." The hot disc, an old school-flavored bag of riches, is the follow-up to "No Arms, No Legs, Just a Head and a Body," released two years ago. "There's definitely something for everyone with all the different sounds, but the golden era is definitely there," says group front man Mathias, who is joined by Kama, Black Patrick and DJ Mahf. "A few of us came up in the golden era of hip-hop with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. DJ Crucial handled a good deal of the production, and everyone knows he's a big proponent of the '90s-era hip-hop that's real sample-based with the jazz and soul samples. He really knows how to conjure that spirit." Mathias, a former member of eclectic rock and hip-hop St. Louis band Core Project, says "Bottle Full of Bourbon" is a more cohesive effort than the previous "No Arms." "On the first album, we didn't know each other well," he says. "We were just getting to know each other as artists and as people. The songs were more experimental, more loosey-goosey." The new album also has more crossover appeal, which Mathias says works because they often share bills with rock bands. His biggest influence is late rapper Katt Davis of Bits N' Pieces. "He was always spitting fire about something and always getting his point across, and that really resonated with me," he says. "That's the approach I took, getting my message across without being preachy." Earthworms is a band that likes to talk about having a good time and rockin' the party, though it stays away from the "party rap" moniker. The CD release party for "Bottle Full of Bourbon" will be at 9 p.m. Friday at Lucas School House with a full band including Dave Grelle on keyboards, Jeremy West on guitars, Gavin Duffy on bass, Grover Stewart on drums, and a horn section with Terry Grohman and Ben Reece. Midwest Avengers, 40 Til' Five and Steddy P are also on the bill. Admission is $10. More information is available at www.myspace.com/earthworms or www.lucasevents.com. ..
