Following The Balloon and The Bubble EPs, the talented Wolverhampton songsmith now launches the third and final in the self-released collection, The Box, which will be on sale on the night.

Written some nine years ago, the slow burning Right Here In Front Of You which provides the title reference conjures the splintered heart balladry of Thom Yorke as it builds in emotional intensity while the chugging tick tocking guitar rock We All Feel The Same Pain melds Damien Rice and early U2, Holding My Head Under marries 60s English campus folk to Bolan percussion and, with whispered vocal and keening pedal steel, I Saw The End is the sort of naked soulful confessional of regret that warrants comparison with the mighty Richard Hawley.

That same open heart emotional surgery can be heard on the slow building If I Grow Old’s leafy, star-kissed and hopelessly romantic hymn to enduring love while, another soul melting moment, graced with both BJ Cole’s pedal and steel and backing vocals from Carina Round,

the scuffed melancholy of Where Is The Love has every chance of becoming 2010’s anthem for the heartbroken.

Joined by John Large on drums, bassist Steve Clarke bass, June Mori on piano and Tom Bounford providing violin, this promises to be little short of an incandescent evening, the new material boosted by past diamonds like Somewhere I Don't Want To Go, Carousel and You Can’t Give Me Anymore that will have you leafing through the thesaurus for superlatives.

Sharing the night will be Suffolk acoustic blues singer-songwriter Vashti Anna and a solo set from Michael Clarke, singer with Birmingham ringing guitar outfit Rogue States whose own Lights EP shines with the spirit of U2, Snow Patrol and REM.8pm. £6. Glee Club

DAN WHITEHOUSE
THE BOX E.P.

...it’s quite simply one of the very best releases of the year. Really. I’ve been listening to it on a daily basis for quite some time and it never ever disappoints. Never loses its emotional intensity. Never ceases to surprise with its musical invention.
Listen to the tension in We All Feel The Same Pain; the initial swell, the artisan chorus, the push and pull of melody against rhythm and the final release as all elements meet.
Marvel at Where Is The Love – my song of the year incidentally – a simply beautiful piece of music with pedal steel legend B.J. Cole adding a stunning landscape and Carina Round a harmony vocal that amplify Dan’s majestic vocal.
If I Grow Old is a deceptively arranged love song bolstered by June Mori’s elegant piano and Dan’s emotive falsetto. Holding My Head Under and I Saw The End both ably illustrate Dan’s excellence as a writer, delivering songs that are at once clearly personal and yet universal with words and melody sounding as though they might be stolen from your own diary and delivered with an intimacy that always makes listening an intensely personal experience.
Right Here is the key song to The Box in many ways; a tough song of defiant vulnerability that builds to a scorching emotional howl courtesy of Dan’s underrated, always tasteful guitar playing.
And that’s The Box. And That’s Dan Whitehouse. Musician and 6 Music presenter Tom Robinson gets it and growing audiences across the UK get it. They understand that this is truly fine music from one of the best kept secrets in music.
It would be easy to finish with some box opening tag line but this music neither needs nor deserves that; it just needs you to listen with an open heart.

Greetings!

Thank you to all who came to the Bubble EP launch and made it such a wonderful night. Everyone was as warm as the midday sun and the band and I really enjoyed playing the songs. Did you tune into WCR radio last night? Katy J played 3 tracks on her show and discussed the gig too.

I would also like to thank Ben Drummond, Lisa De'Ville and Jade who all played great sets, and the venue manager Chris Brown who went reached far beyond his call of duty.

You can view a gallery of photos taken by Carsten at the event

The Bubble EP was officially released today and is now available to buy via itunes, or on CD via paypal from my site.

A lovely chap called Jed Hart captured the gig and various other bubble shananegenins on video, i'll be posting clips on this blog over coming weeks.

I have two gigs this week - this Thursday 28th at Glee Club Birmingham and Friday 29th May at the Wychwood Festival..hope to see you there.

I am also very excited about a forthcoming support slot (June 14th) with 'Broken Records' a fantastic new band signed to legendary 4AD label.

Bye for now...i'm heading off to continue work on the box ep!

Hellooooo,

On May 23rd 2009, I will be joined by an eclectic ensemble of musicians for a full bodied performance of The Bubble EP, part two in a trilogy of EPs released throughout 2009.

Considered an ‘undiscovered gem’ by many concert goers, the beautiful theatre space at Newhampton Arts Centre will provide the ideal environment for the performance. The theatre has comfortable seating, disabled access, the room has a great natural sound and the sound and lighting systems are second to none.

The location is of particular significance as it is where we recorded the music too; a total of 21 songs will be released in 2009 via 3 EPs: The Balloon: The Bubble: and The Box.

Tickets are available now for £5, click here to buy via the Newhampton Arts Centre website, or call the box office: 01902 572 090 during office hours.
