Last night I took a trip back in time, my wife and I along with some of our best friends headed out to catch 80's sensation Rick Springfield in concert. I will admit I was very hesitant at first to purchase these tickets, I mean really, how good can he be, he's been around since I was 9 years old. Being that my wife is a huge 80's fan I figured why not, it will be a fun night for her. Now for you to fully understand my nervousness you would have to hear the story of my friend Jason Gray, you see Jason and his wife Taya went to a Cyndi Lauper show recently only to find themselves smack dab in the middle of a homosexual gathering (you can read it in his blog) so for the weeks leading up to this event I had prepared myself for what "could be". We arrived a little before the show started, spread out our blanket and dined on our picnic of Chik-fil-a and Sun Chips. Around 8 the opening band came on, wow! these guys were my parents age or older, singing mostly cover songs from generations before me, stricken with pure boredom I gazed around the crowd that was filing in, just seeing what and who was there. I was pleasantly suprised, it was mostly couples like my wife and I, mid thirtys, middle income, just looking to recapture what was once their youth, I was however suprised at how many young fans were there, 15-25. Finally around 9:15 with much build up Rick took the stage, my first impression was, "wow, this guy is in good shape", I mean he might be 10% body fat if that, he has fought age well, it is obvious that physical fitness is at the top of his to do list. Rick jumped right into singing the hits that made him famous "Human Touch", "Jesses Girl", "I've Done Everyhting For You", and this list goes on. What unveiled that night was a guy who refuses to grow old, his energy level was second to none, he spent most of his night in the crowd singing with the fans and running from one end of the stage to the other, he was a well rehearsed professional. Every song was sung at his best ability, which is still really good by the way. His energy level never dropped. By nights end he had sung pretty much every song I wanted to hear, the amphitheatre was full of happy patrons who felt they had gotten their moneys worth, most of us leaving wanting more. Later that night I thought how easy it would be for him just to let himself go, eat whatever whenever, just stand behing the mic and sing, take his check and go home. I mean that is what most of that generation has done, I'm guilty myself, but Rick chose to stand out, to continue to impress and improve, to win over a new generation of fans and constantly strive to keep up with the times. You know we as Christians can learn a lot from Rick Springfield, now there something you thought you would never hear, I mean, how many of us had that one hit wonder of Christianity, where we really felt locked into what God had in store for us. We worked hard, studied long, and prayed hard. But then mother time caught up with us, we slowly began to get "spiritually fat", eating whatever society had to offer whenever they wanted us to, no longer seeking fresh ideas or even considering change. We started going to Church out of habit, no longer was there a desire to make ourselves better. Just sitting in the pew and going home has become acceptable to most of us, so many Churches are just generic black and white, newer generations are not on their "to do list', our generation is all we know how to appeal to, we rarely leave wanting more. Desire... thats what its all about, so easy to obtain but so quick to pass, so many say "I just didnt get it this morning, the preacher was off, the Worship team was off key, the lights were to dim..." you see, its easy to find fault, but rarely do we focus on ourselves, how we prepared ourselves for Worship before we walked in the doors, how our prayer life was the week leading up to services, or something so simple as asking God to bless you today. I'm not familiar with Rick's spirituality but I do know we can all take time to slow down and learn something from him. If you have a chance go see him live, you might just leave feeling youger. Thanks for reading, hope all finds you well. God bless.
