The 99th Annual Christmas Boast Parade
If there was ever an aquatic equivalent to the spectacle of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, it must be the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, which sets sail into its 99th holiday season on Wednesday, December 12 through Sunday, December 16 at 6:30pm each evening in Newport Harbor. With the theme of 'Twas the Lights Before Christmas,' the visually stunning parade is expected to again attract an audience of over one million spectators over the five consecutive evenings.
Garnering national attention in The New York Times (who called it "One of the top holiday happenings in the nation") and on the CBS Morning Show, among other media outlets, the parade has been a uniquely southern California holiday tradition for nearly a century and is the oldest holiday boat parade in the United States. Produced by the Commodores Club of Newport Beach and the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, and presented by Simple Green (plus additional sponsors Fidelity Investments and Traditional Jewelers) the parade features a dazzling armada of over 100 festively lit and decorated boats – ranging from small skiffs, kayaks, canoes and power boats to enormous multimillion dollar yachts.
Many of the boats are richly adorned with animated holiday scenes accompanied by seasonal music and costumed carolers. Some boat owners in the past have spent over $50,000 to decorate their vessels for the yearly event. The colorful, twinkling parade winds its way nearly 14 miles around the harbor to give viewers in restaurants, yacht clubs, on public beaches, and in private homes an incredible sight – one that has delighted generations since 1908.
Acting as the backdrop for the parade is the annual "Ring of Lights" contest, hosted by the Commodores Club. Beautifully and impressively decorated bayside estates and businesses surrounding the harbor go "all out" with their own festive holiday displays, featuring everything from elaborate roof-top animated scenes to fanciful dancing Christmas trees. With its judged categories and prizes, the "Ring of Lights" competition has brought out playful rivalries among harbor-side residents and, from a local perspective, is almost as celebrated as the parade itself.
Dinner reservations during the parde are now available at the following harborside restaurants: First Cabin at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, Rusty Pelican and Villa Nova.
For a video preview of the parade, go to this website.

"Little Hollywood" Embraces Famous Past and Future NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Once nicknamed "Little Hollywood," Newport Beach has attracted celebrities for years with its convenient access to the movie and entertainment capital of the world and the promise of relative obscurity. While many visit the city for its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous – a phenomenon that has only increased with the popularity of "The O.C." – others have chosen to make Newport Beach home. Current Celebrity Residents
Los Angeles Lakers megastar, Kobe Bryant, resides in a $4 million, Mediterranean-style home with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Kobe bought the house with his wife, Vanessa, who grew up in the area and wanted to "return to her roots." Dean Koontz, best-selling author of suspense novels such as "Velocity" and "The Taking", resides in an art-deco house he designed himself, complete with its own lift, antique deco furniture, and separate male and female marble-floored bathrooms for guests. A member of Frank Sinatra's original Rat Pack, Joey Bishop is known to be one of Newport Beach's most colorful residents, often making appearances in local events and giving interviews from his house on Lido Isle. Retired professional basketball player, Karl Malone, played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2003-2004 season (he previously played 15 years for the Utah Jazz), and now resides with his family in Newport Beach. America's richest landlord, Donald Bren, is ranked as #40 on the Forbes 400 list the profiles the wealthiest people in America. Sole owner of The Irvine Company since 1996, Bren is known for his generous contributions to California universities. Henry Segerstrom, and the entire Segerstrom family, are known for their support of Orange County art organizations. They have donated land to South Coast Repertory Theatre and to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, both located in Costa Mesa. Newport Beach's most notorious resident, Dennis Rodman, owns a home on the Balboa Peninsula, and owned a local nightclub on Pacific Coast Highway called fittingly, "Rodman's" until 2006.
Past Celebrity Residents
John Wayne is perhaps the best-known of all Newport Beach celebrities, a fact that is reinforced daily at the county's airport bearing his name. Some say Wayne owes his fame and fortune to Newport Beach, since a bodysurfing accident off Balboa Pier forced him to give up football and pursue an acting career. Wayne lived in a large waterfront home overlooking the beautiful Newport Harbor, sailing his yacht, "The Wild Goose" until his death in 1979. The Duke's 136-foot yacht can still be seen sailing the waters off Balboa Island as it is not owned by Hornblower Cruises & Events and is available for private charter At age 13, actress Shirley Temple was crowned the very first "Miss Newport". She was known to be a regular upon Newport Bay until she moved and Buddy Ebsen (best remembered for his roles as Jed Clampet and Barnaby Jones) took up residence in her home. Humphrey Bogart, actor in films such as "Sabrina" and "The African Queen," was a frequent visitor at many Newport Beach restaurants and sailing events in the Harbor. The house he lived in was his wedding present to actress Lauren Bacall. Actor Errol Flynn was a regular among the Newport Beach Jet Set Yacht crowd, and was one of the reasons Newport Beach was nicknamed, "Little Hollywood". Current A-lister, Michelle Pfeiffer, lived in Newport Beach until just recently, and grew up in nearby Santa Ana, where she attended Fountain Valley High School. Pfeiffer participated in local beauty pageants and was once crowned, "Ms. Orange County," which helped launch her acting career. Other Past Celebrity Residents · Jim Abbot - former Major League Baseball pitcher who was born with only one hand · George Burns and Gracie Allen – radio and television comedians · Candice Bergen – actress known for her starring role on "Murphy Brown" · James Cagney – film star; won a small island in Newport Beach from a game of poker · Dick Dale – "King of the Surf Guitar" · Greta Garbo – actress; was an exclusive member of the Balboa Bay Club · Heather Locklear – actress from television shows "Melrose Place" and "Dynasty" · Bo Derrick – model and actress · William Holden – actor · McG – producer of "The OC," which is said to be based on many of his experiences growing up · Kelly Mcgillis – actress from "Top Gun"; attended Corona Del Mar High School · Chuck Norris – martial arts star, part owner at one time of "Woody's Wharf" on the Peninsula · Sugar Ray – band was formed in Newport Beach · Roy Rogers and Dale Evans – actors; residents of Lido Island · Leigh Steinberg - | ..>
