Jeff Carey+Audrey Chen+Raed Yassin+Morten J. Olsen Quartet
American composer JEFF CAREY’S music is a blend of fixed-media composition and electro-instrumentalism — the music of the visceral, ecstatic, and electric moment. His inventions of fluid sound are in an ever changing state: a mobile moves in the wind, changes shape, and is in constant renewal. Listeners are invited to explore an abstract sonic universe and engage in a world inspired by fictional cosmology, code breaking, and mathematical conundrums.

AUDREY CHEN is a Chinese-American musician and performance artist born outside of Chicago in 1976. Using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen’s work focuses on the combination and layering of traditional and extended techniques. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is often extremely personal and visceral. Her performance work incorporates sound, movement and visual/sculptural concepts.

Washington, D.C.'s Musical Experiments
By Neda Ulaby
January 6, 2009

Hear The Music

Washington, D.C., is known more for suits than fun, but it also has a long history as a home to diverse styles of music — from Duke Ellington to hardcore to go-go — and some of the hottest guitarists to ever touch the fretboard: Roy Clark, Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton. Today, the city is home to an experimental music scene that's thriving under D.C.'s official radar.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

PINKO COMMUNOIDS is an improvisational trio based in Charlottesville, Virginia. The trio consists of Carey Sargent, Kevin Parks and Wendy Hsu, who create both free and structured improvisations using conventional instruments including guitars, accordions and percussion, found objects, circuits, microphones and other electronics. Recent explorations have led the trio to investigate aspects of tuning and timbre and the relationship between the two. INFO: www.pinkos.info

TL0741 is the solo exploration of Pat Gillis, Northern Machine. A dynamic alchemical universe of electronic anti-music is conjured using tape manipulation, digital sampling, analogue synthesizers and audio processing. INFO: www.myspace.com/tl0741

VIOLET (J. Surak) is a veteran experimenter from Washington DC. Since the early 1980s, he has explored the netherworld between improvisation and composition to create something between the two auditory realms of experimental music. Found objects, microcassettes, damaged compact discs, prepared acoustic instruments and old record players outfitted with foil are his tools of choice. INFO: www.zeromoon.com/violet

BLK w/ BEAR now encompasses the talents of J.S. Adams (loops/prepared vinyl), Doug Poplin (cello) and multi-instrumentalist P.D. Sexton. The trio creates laptop and real-time textures that incorporate 'dead media' sources such as Wilcox-Gay Recordio and Mutoscope Voice-o-Graph discs. BLK w/ BEAR champions broken language, audio bleed, broadcast interference, delay and decay, field recordings and the inherent surface noise of vinyl recordings. The VLT_BLK collaboration will only feature Adams. INFO: www.myspace.com/blkwbear

ABOUT THE SONIC CIRCUITS FESTIVAL

The SONIC CIRCUITS FESTIVAL of Experimental Music was initiated by the American Composers Forum (ACF) to provide DC's music and art communities with the opportunity to sample experimental and avant-garde electronic music, with an emphasis on improvisation and artistic use of new technologies. Now heading into its eighth year, the Washington DC chapter of the ACF has expanded the scope of the festival to include electroacoustic compositions, experimental jazz, noise rock, electronic drone and experimental folk, as well as live video and film programs. Sonic Circuits seeks to foster the spirit of collaboration through the diversity of participating artists, and its varied programming appeals to arts enthusiasts of all types.

The 2008 Sonic Circuits Festival is scheduled for September 28 through October 5 at the Velvet Lounge, National Museum of Women in the Arts and George Washington University in Washington DC, and at Pyramid Atlantic in Silver Spring MD.
