Hello peeps.

It's been a while since we have given you an update on what is going on in the world of This Manhattan!

We are currently in the progress of writing some new songs at the moment. We are looking for a more mature, rockier sound, still keeping the same catchy hooks we had before which we hope you will all enjoy!

A few gigs on the Horizon too. Next week we are supporting US Ska band "Chase Long Beach" at the Southampton Joiners on the 6th of August. Promises to be an awesome show! Check our gig listings for full details.

Also we put our tracks up on Last FM and Pure Volume. Go to Pure Volume to listen and download our last EP "Standby Transmissions". Listen to it, rock out and share it with all your friends!

Well thats it for now. Hopefully see you all real soon!

This Manhattan show off their really strong vocal performances through three really punchy rock tracks on Standby Transmissions, their latest recording.
The single bursts into life with 'Wanna Know How I Got These Scars?' - an explosive rock track with plenty of pace and some really great guitar tones. It's got the sound of EMO, but without the vulnerabilities.
'Who Needs Lovers?' is anthemic and harmonious and builds from a melodic verse into the passionate chorus. There's a semi-detached guitar solo to provide a brief interlude before the suitably massive final section.
The final song, 'Please Don't Fail' is plaintive, but still has teeth to bite. It's got emotive triplets to curve the rhythm and builds from some gentle beginnings into a less fragile angsty sound.
There are echoes of Get Amped, The Early November and Mike TV in this recording. If you haven't heard of This Manhattan, go and check them out right now.

Hey guys.

It's been a while since we last put a blog up (or last played a gig!). We have been working really hard doing two things. First thing is getting Mike, our new bass player up to speed. This has not taken long and Mike is ready to rock our flipping socks off.

The second thing is get our new track recorded which you will see our now on our Myspace page. There is the full version of "Wanna Know How I Got These Scars" plus snippets of the other two songs "Who Needs Lovers?" and "Please Don't Fail". Both awesome songs as well. We hope you take some time to listen and rock out.

So if we have done those two things why are we not giging yet? Well we are. As of March we are playing shows and kicking ass! Check out our gig listings for details and hope to see some of you down there!

As some of you are aware we have been with out a bass player for a few months. Now the void has been filled by Micheal Back. We are all excited that Mike has joined the band and think 09 is shaping up to be a good year already! So we are working on the some stuff, so keep your eyes and ears open as we hope to be invading a stage near you real soon.

Stop by and show Mike some love!

Thanks to Steve from The Mag for this review! We are a bit proud if this!

This Manhattan are a strong rock outfit with a nice thick guitar sound and contrastingly emotional vocals.

'The Year In Which The Girl Didn't Listen' is the earth quaking introduction to the band, with a big beat and a strong chorus. They have also nailed the break that precedes the final run in, upping the power, dropping the beat and sticking it to you in the firmest possible way. The fade out is a bit of a disappointment, as I could have heard a bit more of this epic section before some clever ending cleared things up, but this is a detail that doesn't ruin the song by any means.

They show a delicate side to their sound in 'Left For Death', which doesn't wallow for long before it starts to notch things back up to an emo-tastic bitter chorus. There's definitely some influence from The Early November in this track and it works out very well.

The guitar sound that introduces us to 'The Day That Changed My Life' is a bit piercing and could perhaps drop an octave to compliment the introverted start to this slow-burner. The chorus is a punchy and melodic high to the Spartan verses, which again have an Ace Enders feel throughout.

'Photograph' is the final song, but the first time This Manhattan show off their vocal interplay. This is impressive for two reason, firstly it's incredibly good; starting with a back-and-forth between the chap and the lass and then slipping into sweet harmonies. The second reason it's impressive is that they've restrained themselves from sticking this powerful device into the other songs, where it wouldn't have worked at all.

Brilliant.

This Manhattan can rightly be proud of this release.

THIS MANHATTAN

Memories of Friday the 12th CD EP

Why is it that bands from Southampton name themselves after places in America? First Fleeing New York (now re-christened Skulls) and now this lot. There's an irony too as people over 40 may also remember Southampton's' legendary punk club in St Mary's in the late 70's/early 80's was also called Manhattans. Inadvertently This Manhattan bind themselves into the cities lost musical legacy, whilst simultaneously having international sized ambition and confidence and a transatlantic sound.

So are they Emo? Pop-Punk? On first hearing, track one (The Year In Which the Girl Didn't Listen) just sounds like a good, solid modern rock band. Despite a clumsy, overlong title, no proper traditional verse/chorus structure, it's a catchy, immediate song, which has won them a chance at a support slot at a local stadium gig! Singer Matt sounds a bit like a young Michael Stipe from REM whilst the music is kinda Blink 182 having a go at being Coldplay.

Left for Death – an emo-pop epic –with steamrollering powerchords, alternating with gentle guitar and harmonies, is predictably perhaps about a girl who 'didn't care', The vocal line is reminiscent of a Placebo song, and a well-placed expletive gives it a memorable verbal right-hook.

The Day that Changed My Life is probably the bands piece de resistance. The heaviest guitar-wise, loads of down-stroke, a neat top-string solo, an almost cinematic section that sounds like a mandolin and a chant-a-long woah-oh-oh coda to end. It's a bloody anthem –in the true sense of an over-used term.

The closer Photograph – is a delicate, slow-building monster of a track with a guest female vocalist dueting to great effect. The lyrics verge on cheesy– if your photographs (like memories) really do fade away then put some more ink in your printer! – but it's immaculately performed.

Is it a demo, is it an EP? Well it's well produced enough to be the latter and a strong, confident debut from a young band with a lot of potential. They need to work on their song writing and increase both their lyrical and musical vocabulary but there is talent here. The openness and honesty in the songs are perhaps their interpretation of what 'emo' –the music, rather than the schoolyard term of abuse – means. Maybe the rhythm section should listen to some Joy Division or Dagnasty and they should speed up the fast bits, slow down the slow bits but I'm being hypercritical and showing my age. This Manhattan are a promising band and this is an impressive recorded debut.
