I just wanted to take this opportunity to clear up any misconceptions people may have heard about the band recently. After our August 7th show at North River Tavern (My bachelor party) the band is going on a hiatus because of my wedding in September and the birth of my first child in December. Beth and I could not be happier about our lives and feel very blessed to have such a great supporting cast around us. The past three years that I have been in this band have been amazing and more of those days will come. I am very proud of the music the band has made to this point and look forward to making even more. Most of all, I am thankful to everyone who has made it to show after show supporting us. This baby I am sure will be loads of inspiration in my life. Thanks for everything now and in the future. We will be back soon.
Justin

Location: Atlanta, GA Sample if you like: Weezer, Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith, Pixies After months of writing new material and laying tracks in the studio, Martians See Red released their new CD “Godot” on June 19th. The guys kicked off their promotional tour with a CD release party in Masquerade’s Hell. This was ironic as the overwhelming heat that swept through the venue that night gave everyone an idea of what hell might actually feel like. Despite the heat, both the bands and the fans had their game faces on. Photo by Lance Eubanks The Drownout warmed up the crowd prior, and most of the floor was filled as MSR opened with “Skeleton”, a mellow song with a slower, dramatic, dark edge to it. As Kenny laid into the first solo, I could read the intensity on his face and tell the guys were starting to feed into the moment. They played some oldies from their prior release “When All Seems Lost”. “Drunks Awake” is about unrequited love and has bittersweet guitar with a heavier bridge. “Open Words” was a crowd favorite, and most of them knew the words and sang along. This would be the band’s power ballad. “Everything is Falling into Place” has a 90’s flavor to add to its poetic lyrics. The guys sounded really tight during this song and received a great response from the audience. One of the great things about Martians See Red is that they can combine beautiful lyrics that relate to the soul with a rock edge so as not to come across too sappy. They kept this tradition alive with the songs off their new album. “Vilena” starts off slow and sweet, and then kicks into gear with high energy and at times vocals that squeal. “Places My Flesh Used to Be” featured a deep bass you could feel in your throat during the bridge, and a sweet guitar to balance it out. “Heartbomb” reminds me of Adam Sandler’s demented love song in the movie The Wedding Singer. The verses tend to be hard hitting, while the chorus is light and carefree. “Traffic” is catchy and repetitive, with a touch of pop, and a heavy twist. “Chi” is a song about moving on and gives off a pop-rock sound that intensifies as it reaches its chorus. If any criticism could be offered, it would partially go to the sound, which is more or less the venue’s problem, not the bands. During several songs, Kenny’s vocals seemed to get lost in the music instead of being distinctive enough to distinguish. The other would be the band’s consistent level of enthusiasm. Most of the time they were feeding off each other and the crowd, but either due to heat, exhaustion, or both there were times when the energy was lost. With the immense heat consuming the place, it can definitely be forgiven this time.

Hello loves, It looks like the new album is going to be called Godot.I really love Samuel Beckett's famous play Waiting for Godot and think it is a wonderful metaphor for life in general. The two main characters in the play do anything they can to "hold the terrible silence at bay" while they wait for Godot(most likely God). They eat, sleep, dance, sing songs, argue and contemplate the meaning of it all.Bernard Dukore sees Beckett's play as a metaphor for the futility of man's existence when salvation is expected from an external entity, and the self is denied introspection.Anyhoo, what the heck does this have to do with our album? For all of the beautiful and intense emotions we all long and live for, life can be bleak and boring and is nothing more than passing time until the inevitability of death. That wonderful moment you kissed the one you love for the first time,or had your breath taken away by one of the world's wonders is gone before you know it and we cling to that memory until the next blissful moment arrives.Unfortunately,in between those beautiful moments bad things can happen.Things like death, heartbreak, insecurity, and friendships ending. So to pass the time we earth walking folks pull out our alcoholic, sexual, and exercise machine crutches and "live".You get the point. I'm one of those people who get a little too intense and passionate about things at times and my friends often call me a sensitive, sappy little twat.lol.What I'm saying is that even when we find what we're "looking for" we still wait for something else. For some people it's salvation.I'm always looking for new experiences, but I tend to cling to the people I love because death is always in the back of mind. When I was living in Greenville it seemed I was going to a funeral every month and what was once a vibrant and breathing friend was replaced by a lifeless lump of well dressed ,hardened flesh. The songs on the album are of course about girls(I'm a single man) and misanthropy and beauty and getting older and dying and all types of other things that spark the neurons in my brain.Basically, life in general.I hope everyone enjoys the album and I can't wait to see you all June 19th at The Masquerade for our CD release and tour kickoff!!!Wowsers, this was really goddamn long.lol Sorry about that and yes..........I really said wowsers. See you soon : ) Kenny

July 26th Review of Martians See Red
The first time I heard Martians See Red was on St. Patty's Day earlier this year. They opened for another local band, The Bastard Suns, and made a lasting impression. Their expressive and poetic lyrics, paired with simple and catchy melodies create a chill and fun vibe throughout their performance. The show I reviewed took place at Three Bears Café in Marietta, GA. With a center high-rise stage, balcony, and long horseshoe bar, this venue has a good set-up for the local scene, despite its suburban location. Brew in hand, I settled in near the bar right as the first chord resounded. Ambient undertones and drums mimicking a rattlesnake grabbed the crowd's attention, and the set began to take off.
First off, this band has great energy. The bassist was all over the place, from the first song to the close of their set. They have both comfort and confidence on stage. Their overall sound reminded me of mid- 90's bands like Weezer and Gin Blossoms intertwined with a rebellious guitar. They keep it simple, not overly technical, and the result is a very chill vibe. The vocalist, Kenny Brown, has a unique voice that mirrors the emotions behind the music. He is definitely a romantic, and it is reflected in the poetic lyrics and the band's general style. It was no surprise he had a circle of ladies jamming out front row. The band's songs can be playful, like Channeling Aero, melancholy, like Everything is Falling, or just plain pretty, like Open Words. But fear not guys, they've got guitar solos and songs like Maybe, Vilena, and The Drunk's Awake that you can rock out to with one of those lovely ladies.
They performed two covers that night that were received with enthusiasm from everyone in the room. The first was NIB by Black Sabbath. I myself stood straight up as my ears recognized what song it was and began rock fisting with everyone. The second was For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica, which once again they nailed. They chose to close with that one, and definitely were given a proper farewell as the curtain closed.
Channeling Aero was a favorite of mine that night. I danced and enjoyed the heavy guitar chiming in, with an echo on Brown's vocals during the chorus. I thought bassist, Gerr, and drummer, Troy Wolf, did a great job on this song as well. You could tell they branched out on this song from their usual sound. They had a guest appearance from some crazed fan, who probably had one to many drinks, but this provided extra flavor during the set. I also enjoyed their new songs, Vilena and Springtime. Vilena has a punk undertone to it, which yet again allows them to branch out from their norm. Springtime has a great chorus in which Brown and Justin Mewborn (guitarist) create one harmonious sound with both guitars.
If you are looking for screamo, fast-paced punk, or an industrial sound- this is not the show for you. But if you enjoy the relaxed pleasure of acoustic or reggae, the simplicity and depth of alternative, and lyrics that go beyond beers and chicks, you should definitely check out Martians See Red. Their next hometown show will be August 23rd at North River Tavern in Sandy Springs, and again on September 19th at Three Bears Café in Marietta. These guys put on a great show and you are sure to have a good time, so put those Rock Fists Up!

Our band name came from a chapter in a wonderful book by V.S. Ramachandran called Phantoms in the Brain:Human Nature and the Architecture of the Mind.I borrowed the book from my lovely friend Richelle at the time Troy and I were forming the band and when I came to the chapter Do martians see red?,I thought it would work out for the time being.Well, four and a half years later we still have it, and unless we get big enough for Ramachandran to hear of us and think we suck,I guess it will do.Hehe. While I am on the subject of neuroscience,I would recommend checking out a book by Daniel J. Levitin entitled This Is Your Brain On Music. Before he became a neuroscientist he was a record producer and sound engineer for artists like Stevie Wonder and Blue Oyster Cult.It is all about the connection between music and our brain and helps me to better understand why certain songs resonate with 10 million people, but I hear them and want to feed my ears to an alligator. The point is,all of our listening and the subsequent pleasure or revulsion we feel from a certain song or album is subjective. It is why I listen to The Soft Bulletin by The Flaming Lips and feel it is the greatest album I have ever heard.Levitin also explains that the music we love activates memory traces of emotional times in our lives.I highly recommend reading this book if you love music as much I do.Anyway,I have been asked for a long time where our name came from and figured it was about time I told everyone.I am a horrible typer so if there are a lot of grammatical errors, well, you know,I'm a horrible typer.See you on the 29th dears. Kenny

I'm not really sure what to make of these guys. Overall, they sound like a decent alternarock band styled after the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr., with some Foo Fighters punch, but they slip in a lot of interesting and conflicting styles.
For instance, the high vocals range from classic rock to British invasion, and the guitars sometimes have that Pixies-ish psych/punk distortion, but they also burst into crisp riffs or doomy, bluesy Sabbath-like solos. Songs are either short and radio-friendly (with that 80s proto-grunge/punk twist), or slow and moody, but in a cool psych-rock and modern Britpop way.
Although the songs didn't grab me, their sound is pretty interesting, and I listened to it through twice. I'm still not sure if they're unique or a throwback to the pre-grunge age as recycled through Blur, The Music, and Radiohead, but I'm willing to hear more and hope they put out a full-length. |

Before there was Nirvana and Sunny Day Real Estate there was a fun little genre called indie rock or alternative full of bands like the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. They wrote jangly fun numbers that were not quite mainstream enough to make it on the radio and garnered cult followings in pockets all over the country. They were not tough enough to be punk or hardcore but they were still outsiders in their own way. It's not that often that you see a band doing this type of music now a days and that is what makes this record from Martians See Red such a special little record.
The songs on When All Seems Lost… are vintage alt rock full of fun jangly guitar lines through the verses that are abruptly halted by a solid stomp on the fuzz box for the chorus. There are moments where Martians See Red channel something that sounds closer to modern bands like Weezer, but for the most part these guys know where they are comfortable and they stay there. Fuzzy warm garage rock is the name of the day when this album is taken out of its case. There seems to be some sort of sci-fi theme running through the lyrics… maybe that has something to do with the bands name ?. If you like the Pixies or Dinosaur Jr. or any of their running mates do yourself a favor and check out Martians See Red, they will definitely calm your fears.

Martians See Red — When All Seems Lost
Daniel Maldonado Collins
When Martians See Red singer and guitarist Kenny Brown and drummer Troy Wolf left their native South Carolina in search of greener musical pastures, they found them in the thriving Atlanta music scene. After picking up guitarist Justin Mewborn and bassist Matt "Gerr" Gerlinger, Martians See Red slugged it out in the local trenches. The eclectic and competitive reality of a major music town helped them develop the hard alt-rock sound that would highlight When All Seems Lost.
Martians See Red delivers energy, texture and thoughtful song craft with a heavy and dirty yet bouncy and wholly palatable sound. Separating Martians See Red from the pack of alt-rock/post hardcore groups is a gritty, go-for-broke intensity that underpins everything on the album. Like The Ramones and Metallica on their early breakthrough recordings, Martians See Red have created a debut disc full of veracity and "do or die" attitude. Since Martians grab from artists like Clutch, Elvis Costello and Pantera, one can expect a bit of zealous genre-hopping from the talented quartet throughout the album. Opener "Watercolor" is a punchy power-pop number with an infectious punk chorus, while "Channeling Aero" is propulsive, grungy number with a majestic, down-tempo chorus fit for early David Bowie. "The Drunk's Awake" stomps along with a thrashing, snotty West Coast punk approach a la NOFX. All the while, Martians See Red put their own stamp on whatever style they utilize. However they play, it's not difficult to tell that it's the same band. When All Seems Lost is a coherent, thoroughly-listenable effort delivered by a band with energy and conviction.

Martians See Red When All Seems Lost... EP (self-released) Six chunks of nicely-dressed meat. Lots to chew, but boy does it taste good. Thick riffage, swirling rhythms and a slightly off-kilter take on humanity. I'd like to hear something more distinctive from these folks, but there's nothing wrong with walking down a well-worn path when the view is this good.

Martians See Red – When All Seems Lost / 2007 Self / 6 Tracks / http://www.myspace.com/martiansseered / Reviewed 24 June 2007
"Watercolor" is the first track on "When All Seems Lost", and it blends together a number of disparate influences. This song links together The Beatles, Blink 182, Husker Du, The Replacements, and early Foo Fighters to make a radio-friendly rock track with teeth. For an introduction to the band, Martians See Red could not do any better. The track is sufficiently short so that the terse statements created by the band will not sound hackneyed in the later stage of the disc. "Channeling Aero" changes up the influences first put forth by Martians See Red on "Watercolor", in that the deep end of the track is much more brooding and intricate. While the band still has the poppy, Weezer or Blink 182-like approach to the vocals, the bass and drums during the track are closer to a Tool or a System of a Down. "Channeling Aero" may not be as immediately ready for rock radio, but it does represent another strong track by Martians See Red.
"Lost" shows a shift in the band's style. This means that the band takes on Radiohead in regard to the opening arrangements. It is true that "Lost" is another track that is done in the style put forth by Martians See Red, but there is a substantive change in the underlying arrangements present in the track. Of the tracks on "When All Seems Lost", "Lost" is the most contemplative and difficult. The track is strong, but individuals need to dissect it more than previous tracks. Martians See Red were intelligent in placing this track after the first two tracks on the disc, as individuals will already be inculcated to the ways and styles of the band before being asked to consider "Lost".
"Everything Is Falling Into Place" is another shift in Martian See Red's style, in that there is a slower tempo present throughout the track. The influences that were used to create the track are not different than they are in other tracks, but the band decides to go on this other path. The allure of Martians See Red to me is this desire to shift styles and approach other genres or tempos. By doing this, the band stays fresh throughout the entirety of "When All Seems Lost", and makes me want to hear what they can do on subsequent albums. Top this off with tremendous skill, especially present during this sizzling guitar work on "The Drunk's Awake", and individuals simply have to pick up this EP.
