Easy Tigers,

Here's the lowdown from our tour so far:

August 19 - Wednesday - 2009

We hung out for the day at an amazing park where dogs roam free. Not only do they roam free, they were trying to steal our food!!!

The Palomino is such an amazing venue. They hooked us up with cheap, delicious food and free drinks. The venue is in the basement and has such a nice vibe. Small stage with centre-piece bar and a section for the bands on both sides of the stage. It has a rustic country vibe to it that all of us were psyched on.

The people that came out to the Palomino came and ate the music up. Everyone was going nuts and everyone was nice as nice could be. It was such a pleasure playing that place and we'd go back and do it all over again if we were offered a show tomorrow.

The place is amazing.

A nice gentleman by the name of Nico(if i can remember) gave us a place to stay, even though I slept in the van, for the night. A big shout out goes to you my good man!!!

August 20 - Thursday - 2009

We roamed around Edmonton today and checked out the Rexall Centre. Sean was itching to go on a tour inside but no such luck.

We also stopped by West Edmonton Mall and hung around there for most of the day. The biggest mall in the world was nothing short of insane. The place had ferris wheels, roller coasters, mini put courses, a huge pool park with slides and a wave pool, and even a Segway(sp?) course. To top it all off, Everything was INSIDE the mall. We even watched seals doing tricks and sloths....slothing around. Vaughan Mills, eat your shitty heart out.

We played at the Taphouse tonight in St. Albert. The show was so shitty. Indifferent people, emotionless. There was a kid with a Blink shirt on, UFC was playing on the screens.

The venue was great, served us food and one dollar drinks. The band we played with was super nice as well as the sound guy but the show was not promoted at all.

Bummer.

August 14 – 2009- Friday.

We played at the Legion for the first time in over a year. It was our first time playing there with Jeff.

Quite a few people came out. It was a good time but our set got cut short. A lot of new young faces were shown and good friends were in all attendance. Met some new friends and drank some cheap beer. I felt like I didn't get a chance to hang out with people.

The Legion never seems to grow old or new. Whenever we play there, its always the same feeling I have every time.

August 15 – 2009- Saturday.

Driving. Driving Driving. Non stop driving today. All night and throughout the day we’ve been cruising along up north to Thunder Bay.

We camped out in Kakabeka Falls tonight. Rough rainy weather.

August 16 - 2009 - Sunday.

More driving. Camped out in Winnipeg tonight. It was absolutely freezing and I had no blanket. The tent blew away in the morning.

August 17 - 2009 - Monday.

Drove to Alberta today and made our way to Medicine Hat. Duncan is currently sleeping in the van while the rest of us are in a sketchy motel. Sean, Jeff and I are all sick right now. Not a great way to start our first tour.

What's up with the swastikas?

Are you nazis or just really, really fucking dumb?

I noticed that you made a reference to the "Toronto Punk Scene" on your myspace page. Any member of the ACTUAL Toronto punk scene would beat the living crap out of you first and ask questions later.

Please take a moment to appreciate that I at least took the time to ask.

Most punks just lash out when they see swastikas. I'm one of them.

Please either correct your massive error in judgement or stay away from the downtown core of Toronto. Your choice.

---------------------------------------
MY RESPONSE:

The swastika dates back to Sanskrit writing that dates from the Neolithic period. The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit word svastika meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark made on persons and things to denote good luck. Svasti means "well-being and svastika might thus be translated literally as "that which is associated with well-being".

The swastika is found all over Hindu temples, signs, altars, pictures and iconography where it is sacred. It is used in Hindu weddings, festivals, ceremonies, houses and doorways, clothing and jewelry, motor transport and even decorations on food items such as cakes and pastries. Among the Hindus of Bengal, it is common to see the name "swastika" applied to a slightly different symbol, which has the same significance as the common swastika, and both symbols are used as auspicious signs. "Swastika" (Sbastik) is a common given name amongst Bengalis and a prominent literary magazine in Kolkata (Calcutta) is called the Swastika.

The symbol is used in Buddhist art and scripture, known in Japanese as a manji and represents Dharma, universal harmony, and the balance of opposites. When facing left(LIKE ON OUR T-SHIRT), it represents love. Balanced manji are often found at the beginning and end of Buddhist scriptures. Because of the association of the right-facing swastika with Nazism, Buddhist manji (outside India only) after the mid-20th century are almost universally left-facing: 卍. This form of the manji is often found on Chinese food packaging to signify that the product is vegetarian and can be consumed by strict Buddhists. It is often sewn into the collars of Chinese children's clothing to protect them against evil spirits.

In the Western world, the symbol experienced a resurgence following the archaeological work in the late 19th century. By the early 20th century, it was widely used worldwide and was regarded as a symbol of good luck and success.

******

I hope this gives you a different insight for what you think this symbol really means. While you might disregard it simply and blindly as a symbol or weapon of hate, I see this as a way to bring back positive light into its roots. I think it was pretty dumb of you to ask if we were nazi's right off the bat and while I see that you "took the time to ask" us, it's really ironic knowing that you are one of those "punks" that would start fighting someone by simply assuming you know the subject matter. Isn't that sort of like a nazi-supremist "beating the living crap" out of someone that isn't white just cause they are different? "Ask questions later?".

The news and the media are the ones that classify us as "colors" and "races". The only massive error in judgement here is the failure to recognize that these things are drilled into our heads before anyone of us are born simply by a few ingnorant motherfuckers that thought 'color', 'race' and equality were charted by a pyramid scheme.

I don't know of any "Toronto Punk Scene" because there is nothing that stands out with a real message within it's community. "Scene" is a fashion statement.

While you're fighting for peace against racism and hate, so is a korean, mexican, portugese, and an irish man. Just not with fists. Let's not be the sons or daughters of our history that was filled with anger and hate. Let's start today. Your choice.

PEACE,

-S.

Pro snowboarder TJ Schneider (who rides for Capita snowboards) was doing an Ontario tour filming for his online show, 'SNOWBOARD REALMS' (THESNOWBOARDREALMS.COM). He came by the store that Sean and I work at, SANCTION SKATE AND SNOW, and he told me to come out and ride next year's Capita boards. He was nice enough to check out our music and he was even more nice enough to add our song, Searching the Shorelines, into his Ontario episode.

Check out his site and you can watch all his episodes on youtube. ALSO check out his artwork because he is quite the 'artist', although he hates to be called one.

Shoddy out of tune guitars and secret break-in missions, this ep was created on Sept 25 and Oct.2. It was recorded at Harris Institute. The energy was running high and the fire running wild, I decided to write a song in the nick of time before recording. Thus 'Ryan's Song' was created. I was flying by the edge of my seat frantically writing lyrics and parts and recorded it right on the spot. Duncan came along with me and gave the engery it so surely needed. The next day, I couldn't get into recording time because of confusion. So we jimmy-d the door open and recorded guerilla-styles. I found a shitty old guitar with the intonation off-the-wall and recorded my favorite Hot Water Music song, Trusty Chords, or as I like to call it, Rusty Chords (cause the damn guitar wouldnt tune properly). I think it added some flavour, it would've been boring if the guitar sounded perfect. I could've spent more time on everything but I think the spontaneity gave me that extra passion. It was written with the energy of a thousand souls. Do it yourself cause no one's gonna do it for you"!

Free The Jena Six Now

The most consistent theme in my many trips to the Principal’s office is the fact that this answer, given by the parents of the white student who was allegedly beaten by six young black men (One of whom, Mychal Bell, has already been convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy and faces possibly 22 years in prison.) who are now charged with attempt to commit second degree murder and conspiracy, would never, ever fly. And that’s not just because my middle school Principal was like Shaft in retirement. From a July 1st segment on CNN:

KELLI BARKER, VICTIM’S MOTHER: He was getting kicked and stomped.

ROESGEN: Why?

BARKER: I don’t know. You tell me.

ROESGEN: For the first time, the parents of Justin Barker, the victim, agreed to be interviewed exclusively by CNN.

BARKER: Several lacerations on both sides. Both the ears was kind of really damaged. And both the eyes. His right eye was the worst. It had blood clots in it.

ROESGEN: Kelly and David Barker say Justin has no idea why he was attacked. But his injuries have cost $12,000 in medical bills and his parents do believe it was a case of attempted murder.

The answer "I don’t know" is simply dishonest, but shrewd, since it relies on the racism of the listener to fill in the blanks. "I don’t know" is reason enough for black people to become violent, because that after all, is our nature.

CNN tells the story of the Jena Six thustly:

SUSAN ROESGEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT, (voice over): Reporters are not welcome these days at Jena High School where racial tension has led to charges of attempted murder. Back in September, black students sat under this tree in the school courtyard, where traditionally only white students sit. The next day, three white students hung nooses from the tree and were suspended. What the nooses meant divided the town.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think a couple boys made a mistake, you know, but I, you know, I think it’s all being blown out of proportion.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I was very offended because that’s a racial slur against us.

ROESGEN: From there, things got worse. In November, someone set fire to the school, destroying one of its main buildings. Though police don’t know if there’s a connection to the nooses. Then in December, a school fight. A white student, Justin Barker, was knocked unconscious and kicked as he lay on the ground. Six black teenagers were accused of beating him.

A noose is not a slur.

A noose is a threat.

A noose says "nigger, I’m going to hang you."

And let us not gloss over the fact that CNN uncritically reports it as "tradition" that only white students are allowed to sit under a particular tree. The way in which that fact is reported is an unqualified acceptance of the idea that black students did something wrong by not heeding the orders of white students. According to CNN, it is the black students who sought confrontation by defying "tradition".

Not surprisingly, the July 1 CNN report only briefly touches on how out of proportion the reaction of the DA was to the incident.

This is a copy of the school handbook here at Jena High School. It says the punishment for a school fight is three days’ suspension.

But in this case, five of the six black teenagers are charged with attempted murder. And they face the possibility of spending the rest of their lives in prison. Carwyn Jones, Bryant Purvis, Robert Bailey Jr., Theodore Shaw, and a student who hasn’t been identified because he’s only 16, are all charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. A sixth student, Mychal Bell, had his charge reduced to aggravated battery. But they all say they’re innocent. And one of them told us he didn’t even see what happened.

But a July 10 segment on Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now reveals that there was much more that occurred between the live threats hanging from a tree in a Jena schoolyard and the fight in which Justin Barker was injured.

JACQUIE SOOHEN: A series of incidents followed throughout the fall. In October, a black student was beaten for entering a private all-white party. Later that month, a white student pulled a gun on a group of black students at a gas station, claiming self-defense. The black students wrestled the gun away and reported the incident to police. They were charged with assault and robbery of the gun. No charges were ever filed against the white students in either incident. Then, in late November, someone tried to burn down the high school, creating even more tension.

A white student pulls a gun on a group of black students, who wrestle the gun away and call the police. In response, the black students are charged with assault and robbery. A school fight occurs, and the black students involved, all lacking say, firearms, are charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

CNN also failed to report the threats that DA Reed Walters made towards black students before the fight where Justin Barker was beaten. Walters made clear that hanging from a tree wasn’t the only way in which white power could end their lives.

MICHELLE ROGERS: The kids didn’t say anything. They were listening. The kids were quiet. And so, District Attorney Reed Walters, you know, proceeded to tell those kids that "I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen." And the kids were just -- it was like in awe that the district -- you know, Reed Walters would tell these kids that. He held a pen in his hand and told those kids that, "See this pen in my hand? I can end your lives with the stroke of a pen."

As for the potential "murder" victim? He attended a school function the night of the beating. Apparently it wasn’t as vicious as his parents led CNN to believe.

Four days later, a white student was allegedly attacked in a school fight. The victim was taken to hospital and released shortly with a concussion. He attended a school function that evening. Six black students were charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, on charges that leave them facing between twenty and one hundred years in jail. The defendants, ranging in age from fifteen to seventeen, had their bonds set at between $70,000 and $138,000. The attack was written up in the local paper as fact, and DA Reed Walters published a statement in which he said, "When you are convicted, I will seek the maximum penalty allowed by law."

The racism in the behavior of the local government is as flagrant as anything that occurred during segregation. The institutions of government in Jena, Louisiana are operating on de-facto Jim Crow; they carry out through cultural practice what was once law. And the mainstream media has felt absolutely no obligation to cover the story with appropriate depth.

The New York Times has not covered it at all. Neither has the Washington Post, whose vast website carries a single AP article on the subject. CNN was presumably unable to adequately investigate because it was expending all of its journalistic resources attempting to fact check SiCKO and find out what Fred Thompson smells like. My mama has personally been on that ass trying to get me to blog about this and until now, I just haven’t had the words.

Consider the media attention given to Imus for his racial slurs towards the Rutgers Women’s basketball team, and consider the attention given to the Jena Six. Six young black men are about to be lynched in Jena, Louisiana, but there is no Hip-hop to blame, no "shock jock" culture, and no Al Sharpton to give the media a reason to change the subject. There is no Ray Nagin cussing on the radio, no corrupt congressmen, no looting, no lies about savagery in the Superdome.

The only thing in Louisiana waiting for the media is a mirror that shows everything that is ugly in this country that we have pretended to choke down in the name of tolerance.

And so they look away. Again.

RADIO SPOOF DRAWS SUPPORT FOR NAZI-LIKE TREATMENT OF U.S. MUSLIMS
http://wmal.com/showdj.asp?DJID=19978

CAIR says callers’ reaction is a ’wake-up call’ on Anti-Muslim bigotry

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/27/06) - A parody of anti-Muslim bigotry on a Washington, D.C., radio station drew support for treating American Muslims in a manner similar to how the Jewish community was targeted in Nazi Germany.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (
CAIR ) said today that the reaction to the parody is a "wake-up call" for religious and political leaders who remain silent on the issue of growing Islamophobia in America.

In his 630
WMAL program on Sunday, November 26, talk show host Jerry Klein seemed to advocate a government program to force all Muslims to wear "identifying markers." He stated: "I’m thinking either it should be an arm band, a crescent moon arm band, or it should be a crescent moon tattoo." (4:00) Klein said: "If it means that we have to round them up and do a tattoo in a place where everybody knows where to find it, then that’s what we’ll have to do." (11:38)

[The program focused on public reaction to the removal of six Imams, or Islamic religious leaders, from a US Airways flight in Minnesota last week.]

Some callers to the program rejected discriminatory treatment of Muslims, but others supported Klein’s statements and even suggested that even more severe measures be taken against American Muslims. "Richard" in Gaithersburg, Md., said: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their foreheads; you round them up and then ship them out of this country, period." (15:58)

"Heath" in Upper Marlboro, Md., said: "I don’t think you go far enough. . .you have to set up encampments like they did during World War II like with the Japanese and Germans." (23:50)

Later in the program, Klein revealed that his call for discriminatory actions against Muslims was "baloney." Klein said: "I can’t believe any of you, any of you, are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything that I have said in the last half hour." (25:15)

To listen to the entire program, go to:
http://wmal.com/showdj.asp?DJID=19978 (Scroll to the bottom of the page for streaming audio.)
http://rope.wmal.com/aud_archive/jk061126.mp3 (download)

[IMPORTANT NOTE: Listen to the entire program. Jerry Klein was NOT advocating discriminatory measures against American Muslims. He was actually ridiculing and exposing anti-Muslim bigotry.]

"The public reaction to Mr. Klein’s courageous parody should be a wake-up call for American religious and political leaders who remain silent in the face of growing anti-Muslim bigotry in our society," said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "Americans of all faiths must come together to marginalize extremists and to challenge ethnic and religious bigotry."

CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 32 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

This is just one program that happened to be a spoof of the issue.  There are still many others that strongly support this type of treatment for Muslims.
