THE 11TH ANNUAL EAGLE ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL

Far-out international sounds on the DUBLAB "future roots” STAGE....

Cumbias, jazz from the hills to the flatlands of LA, the crackling of rare records brought to LA from Central America or the Middle East and heard in family collections….

The “future roots” Stage, curated by the Los Angeles based non-profit collective DUBLAB as part of their the week-long 10th Anniversary Exploration series around the city, merges the sounds of global Los Angeles and presents them as evidence that— in a city like ours— the world and its eras are at our back door, found in the cultural makeup of its residents, and blended anew in every corner of Los Angeles.  DUBLAB is devoted to the growth of positive music, arts and culture from around the world that crosses genres, defies classification and bridges eras. Broadcasting independently since 1999, what started as a web radio collective has grown to producing events at institutions like the Getty and the Natural History Museum, creating alliances with like-minded artists, and giving back to the community by participating in free festivals like the ERMF!

4:00-4:45pm- Julia Holter  ..
One of dublab's favorite songwriter/composer/sound artists guides us to into the deep with live ethereal sounds incorporating avant-garde instrumentation, vocals, and poetics.

4:45-5:45pm - Nanny Cantaloupe ..
This DUBLAB / KXLU dj will share vibrant sounds from the global, post-modern primitive outernational universe. Cantaloupe is sure to shift your consciousness several degrees for the better.

5:45-6:15pm- Bali and Beyond  ..
Inspired by the cultures of Indonesia, Bali & Beyond features a variety of Gamelan, including sacred ritual pieces and secular music of the royal court, performed on bronze metallophones, gongs, and gong chimes, directed by Maria Bodmann and Cliff De Arment. Bali & Beyond perform Courtesy of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Recording Industries' Music Performance Fund through the assistance of the Professional Musicians Union Local 47.

6:15-7:15pm- The Gaslamp Killer ..
GLK, the Mount Washington based DUBLAB collective dj and Low End Theory resident, will blend the hardest and most fuzz-filled 60s and 70s psych from the Middle East, backed by mystic dancers.

7:15-8:00pm- Michael White Quintet ..
An organic jazz quintet led by violinist Michael White with jazz vocalist Leisei Chen that creates a timeless, ageless, clean and borderless Los Angeles jazz fusion sound incorporating originals, classics, bossa nova, and spontaneous improvisation. White is a groundbreaking composer, educator and violinist who has played with legends such as Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders, while Chen is a vocalist trained in the US and her native Japan.

8:00-9:00pm- Mas Exitos..
Tracing the connections between music made on two continents from the Andes of Peru to the Eastside of L.A., which finds its biweekly home at the Verdugo Bar in Glassell Park and has been featured nationally on NPR.

9:00-9:45pm- Buyepongo  ..
This Los Angeles County-based crew of young musicians dedicated to preserving cumbia and Colombian vallenato culture by embodying the music and echoes passed down through their families - from Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Los Angeles - and playing those sounds vibrantly, channeling cultural history on the streets and to the people of the LA.

10:00-11:00pm- Dub Club Echodelic Sound System
This heavy crew will close out the evening with many eras of Jamaican music, joined by MC Jah Faith and special guest Ranking Joe, a reggae legend who will be toasting over the Echodelic DJ selections in a authentic rub-a-dub style to "nice up the dance!"

Emceed by Carlos Nino, DUBLAB founding DJ and host of KPFK's Spaceways Radio

Six years after its initial release on Emperor Norton Records dublab is proud to announce the digital re-release of its first compilation album, "dublab presents: freeways." This visionary collection, produced by frosty & Carlos Niño, gave the world an early taste of many, now-familiar artists and defined dublab's future roots aesthetic. "freeways" is an inspired view into Los Angeles' vibrant musical landscape. It is a living time capsule that remains light years ahead.

The landscape presented on "freeways" is expansive. Glowing pockets of beauty from the wide sprawl of Los Angeles are merged into a unified spectrum. Current mood:  sad
He sat on stacked cinder blocks and waited. This concrete kept shopping carts safe inside the Thrifty Bin parking lot but had a higher purpose, to border the sidewalk that cradled her perfect feet. She glided this path daily from school to her front door. Oh that front door! He had spent countless afternoons hiding in the bushes trying to sniff her hairspray through the wood. Now he sat on this wall waiting and although she had never glanced his way before he knew she was coming.

Her, with bubble gum breath and sunny skirts. Him, with pass-me-down corduroy shorts. Her with buoyant breasts in bright tube tops. He with sweaty, grey gym socks. She with seductive shampoo scent. He with belly button lint. She with locker full of pop stars. He with rusty matchbox cars.

What our hero lacked in style he made up for in sky high hopes. He had such grand love to give if only she could scale his shyness. He sat whispering sweet nothings to her passing ghost. The shopping carts and cicadas swooned. Time ticked by and as afternoon shadows grew long so did the beard on his thirteen year old face. It was the longest beard in the universe and although invisible to others he felt the bristles itch his knees.

He waited and waited and waited knowing any minute his Mom would call her herd in for casseroles, kool-aid and simmering teen angst. On a family trip to Texas she had acquired the ultimately embarrassing alarm, a large brass cowbell. At that moment of intense anxiety SHE, HER, THE VERY DREAM OF DIVINE BEAUTY appeared as if from the folds of heaven. Her hair flowed. Smooth intentions bounced around his mouth like silent marbles. Her tight corduroys swished. His heart beat an awkward rhythm. Then she looked his way with a slight smile and his being soared but * CLANG * CLANG * CLANG * the cowbell came and her face twisted to a smirk as if to say, "I know you are the cowardly calf being called." A tear rolled from his eye, down a chubby cheek, off the curled tip of his lonely beard and down the rough cinder block wall.

They had been trekking through the mountains for 17 days, chewing on coca leaves and their tongues. Fog covered the path so thickly that every step was a great risk. Those in the lead fell first thus the human train was a hierarchy.

The hopeless twelve led with bulky items expendable as their flesh. They were ghosts melting into mist. Next came men hauling bundles of food, ammunition and alcohol. Four guides followed within earshot. Hearing was their greatest tool, for treachery ahead was indicated by audible death.

By rope, the guides pulled stubborn llamas carrying GOLD * GOLD * GOLD. These glittering nuggets were pried from the ancient Earth under the close inspection of seven foreign "emisarries" whose guns had long ago given them governance. These gringos followed the pack as they had ruled them, with elitist ignorance and cruel disregard.

They drove the expedition like a primitive automobile. The accelerator: their hasty greed. The pedal: pistol shots fired ahead. These bangs brought a hastened pace, tumbling bananas and often, bones shattering on steep cliffs.

Soon after one such "rev of the engine" the caravan came to a sharp corner. The natives disappeared around the bend followed by the buttocks of gold-bearing llamas. Once they curved around the mountainside the path widened and the gringos found themselves face to face with a tobacco skinned woman bearing dark, ebony eyes. Her bright shawl sparkled in the sun and her teeth glinted razor sharp but this odd apparition surprised them far less than the disappearance of their entire entourage. So as they panned the trail for their precious cargo the gringos growled, "Where is our GOLD woman?!!" Then she spoke without moving her lips...

The pale "emissaries" froze but in a flash all that remained were seven empty hats and a fine, bloody mist floating on the breeze.

FRIDAY, January 12th
My phone buzzed steady through the early morning hours. It was an international number many digits long * buzz * buzz * buzz * but I didn't answer knowing it would be an expensive conversation with a mysterious voice. After hopping in the shower, really mine has a trampoline floor, I checked my messages and solved the mystery of the morning caller. It was my pal Annie in India. One month ago we finished a six week journey around the amazing country and after a short trip to Africa she returned to India to work on Wes Anderson's new film "Darjeeling Limited." She was calling to see if I could hop on a plane in two days to deliver a wig to India. I exuberantly answered, "Of course, anything for a head of hair!"

SATURDAY
I picked up a handmade wig and extensions from a local home workshop. It was accompanied by a mannequin head bearing pen marks illustrating the wig's placement and "Anjelica Huston" written across the forehead.

SUNDAY
Following a morning of meetings I did a load of laundry and packed my valuable cargo. In the early evening I started my airborne adventure -> LA -> Munich -> Delhi.

MONDAY
mmmmmm....airline food.

TUESDAY
I cruised through customs at the Delhi airport. "Anything to declare?" Never. I then rendezvoused with Dinesh, the film's man in Delhi. He passed along two more wigs. Three's a charm. Now I was big-time! After a delayed departure (adjust watch to Indian time: slow motion and high commotion) I flew to the always exciting Rajasthani city of Jodhpur, also known as the Blue City for its beautiful clusters of blue homes. Once in the place to be, I dropped the wigs on target and was paid in the oh so common currency of Tanzanian Shillings.

MORE TUESDAY + WEDNESDAY
I hadn't planned on being in India at all so my itinerary was open. I spent my time wandering casually with wide senses. I strolled down narrow alleys and gazed at blue buildings, cows and goats. I ventured through bustling markets and met curious people, elephants and camels. I walked up steep, winding roads to unknown destinations and waved to children, goats, puppies and passing motorcycles. On a lark I boarded a bus crowded with Rajasthani men (gold earrings, huge turbans and spectacular mustaches) and women (dark skin, sparkling eyes and brilliant saris). After many dusty fields and scattered farms I ended up in a small village called Osian. Here I met a huge crowd of wide eyed school children, explored 8th century sandstone temples, and whistled afternoon greetings to peacocks, wild boars, and green parrots. Just another day electrically alive.

THURSDAY
After a morning of more exploration I boarded a plane to Bombay. Upon arrival in this raddest of cities my mind was laser focused on Haji Ebrahim's Radio Repair and Record Shop deep in the Null Bazaar across from Handiwala Masjid. I jumped into what I soon discovered to be the slowest taxi on Earth. Due to my Hindi illiteracy I must have missed the words "SNAIL JALOPY" emblazoned across the side. The driver stopped every few minutes to have a snack, make a phone call, ask for directions and request I give him a spray bottle of shirt starch (of course, I carry these everywhere). Meanwhile I was wringing my hands with the fear of missing my record shopping opportunity. Luckily Haji's crew was on high alert and once in the vicinity we were greeted by a motorcycle escort through the packed streets. I spent the next few hours digging through a blissful bounty of amazing Bollywood vinyl. I walked out with a treasure of amazing wax and a smile on my face. This quickly faded into an expression of fear as I swooped into the turbo taxi yang of my earlier cabbie's molasses yin. We sped through the streets at a dangerous pace barely dodging humans and other animate and inanimate thingies.

FRIDAY
After 24 hours above the clouds and in airport lounges I was back where I started in sunny Los Angeles. There was one major difference. My luggage was filled with amazing music in place of artificial hair.
