The GD Acoustic Sessions
The GD will shortly be hosting a short series of live music sessions across a number of venues within the Gorgie Dalry area. These events will be recorded for inclusion on the GD website as a series of audio podcasts and web-videos.

The aims of the GD sessions are to provide support and promotion for the creative community of Gorgie Dalry and also to encourage the hosting of live music and artistic events within the area.

All material recorded during the sessions will be freely turned over to the participant for their own future use and promotion. Material produced for The GD will not be used on any other website or in any other format without the participant's express permission.

In addition to the live music sessions – musicians and bands from the westward side of Edinburgh are also invited to promote their work via the GD Creatives section - where they can create their own profiles and include up to 5 mp3 tracks for streaming via the GD media player

Beltane - A Celebration!
One of the most spectacular events to be held within the city and hugely popular with both locals and tourists alike - Beltane was the first event reviewed by the Internet Festival back in 1999 and has regularly featured in E.I.I.Festival photographic exhibitions ever since.

This online celebration of the Beltane Fire Festival formed the opening exhibition of the Edinburgh International Internet Festival 2006 and contains re-mastered photographs originally featured in the Internet Festival between 1999 and 2002. View Exhibition

The annual Edinburgh Internet Festival was founded in 1999 as the first online resource for artists and performers attending the Edinburgh Festival. Additional aims of the event have always been to encourage and promote the digital arts within Scotland and to explore the benefits of digital technology within local communities at a grass-roots level.

For almost 10 years the event has been refused all requests for funding or support from Edinburgh Council - The Scottish Arts Council - The Scottish Government.

The forthcoming launch of the Festivals Edinburgh ‘Digital Hub’ project is so similar in aims and objectives to those of the Internet festival that the future of the entire event will have to be reconsidered.

It is ironic that the very body set up to assist and promote Edinburgh’s festivals has in effect killed off the Internet festival - As is also the fact that 'Festivals Edinburgh' is funded by Edinburgh Council - The Scottish Arts Council - The Scottish Government

Well Folks - I have to be the first to admit that this year's Edinburgh Festival coverage was not up to the usual standard. Besides from being the wettest August in Edinburgh for over 80 years - A spiked drink in the first week and a trapped nerve in my back over the second and third weeks meant I was not nearly as mobile as usual and therefore unable to meet up with as many festival folk as in previous years.

However, following Scotfestival'a core objective of encouraging artists and performers to make greater use of the internet and digital technology - what material was gathered is now being prepared for those involved and will be provided without charge for their own future use.

I was also able to make contact with a number of Scottish performers at this year's fringe and over the next few months will be providing free advice and assistance with creating and/or maximising their online profile. This will include providing photographs, web ready video clips and both graphic and web design - covering a wide range of creative arts ranging from stand up comedy and music to the visual arts. Further information will be online here shortly.

As creative and web designer with Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology (ACE IT) - I am delighted to announce that ACE IT has been shortlisted for the finals of the Nominet 'Best Practice Challenge' under the category 'Best Development Project'.

When I first joined ACE IT back in 2002 I had no idea the whirlwind rollercoaster ride I was about to embark upon. Over the years the project's core objective of providing training for the 50+ age group in computing and the internet has gone from strength to strength and become a model for computer training organisations across Scotland (and beyond). In addition, ACE IT has both instigated and developed in partnership with other organisations a wide range of social inclusion and community web development initiatives including the ACE IT Silver Surfers Festival, the multi-award winning 'Edinburgh Silver Surfers' and the 'Moose In The Hoose' project.

At a personal level, involvement with ACE IT has greatly helped me in relation to discovering ways and methods of working around my own disabilities and also in developing my own creative and web design skills. There has also been a number of unforgettable and amazing moments along the way - such as the day the Edinburgh Silver Surfers visited Edinburgh Castle to assist in firing the world famous 'One O'clock Cannon' (Visit) - The exclusive VIP guided tour of H.M.S Edinburgh (Visit) - The discovery of lost music from the Isle of St Kilda (Visit) - And the moment we realised that the photographs provided by a member of the People's War Group recording in detail the surrender of the German U-Boat fleet at the end of WW2 (Visit) - Were not available anywhere else on the web!

From Management Committee - To Staff and Volunteers - To clients and members of the project's outreach programmes... Everyone involved with ACE IT is delighted, honoured and thrilled to have reached the final stages of the Nominet Best Practice Challenge. Win or lose - the nomination alone is seen by all as positive recognition that the hard work and outstanding effort shown across all aspects of the organisation are having a real grass-roots impact both within our own local communities and beyond.

Category: Travel and Places

Trove is a new guide to the treasures of Edinburgh - The concept of which resulted from an invite to the Edinburgh Silver Surfers regarding a special guided tour of Lauriston Castle here in Edinburgh. As web designer and photographer with the surfers I accompanied the group on the trip and like everyone else was delighted by what we found.

While some form of residence has occupied the site since at least the 16th centaury - Lauriston Castle is today one of the UK's finest examples of an Edwardian country house. Loving restored and filled with the heirlooms and furniture of the last family to live there, the last surviving member of which gifted the property and its contents to Edinburgh Council to maintain on behalf of the people of Edinburgh.

Not only does the Castle provide a fascinating insight into Edwardian family life - the public gardens also offer one of the best views over the river forth I have ever come across!

During the visit I was struck with the realisation that even after almost 25 years living in a city I thought I knew inside and out - there were still places with the power to not only delight me - but also inspire the creative side of me.

Talking it over later with friends, I found I was not alone. Within minutes over a dozen places were named that all of us really wanted to visit but which none of us had ever managed to get to. It also came to light that each of us had favourite places that the others had never heard of - or were only faintly aware of.

Following on from all of this - I am delighted to announce the launch of 'TROVE' as part of this year's Edinburgh Internet Festival.

'TROVE - A Guide To Edinburgh's Treasures' is intended to encourage both visitors to the city and residents alike to spend some quality time exploring a few of the "Wee Gems" the capital has to offer - in addition to the outstanding attractions surrounding and including Edinburgh Castle!
