MagnaFUx-ing It Up

The first time we met MagnaFUx's singer, Matt Bessemer, was in college. One moment we were at a party, sitting on a couch, chatting up an attractive coed, and then the next moment we were suddenly underneath the now upside down couch we were sitting on. As we crawled out there was Bessemer, giggling and saying, "Yeah, that's kind of what I thought it would look like."

This same mix of childish curiosity and maniacal mayhem informs the sound of MagnaFux (previously known to oldsters as Ethyline, and to octogenarians as Sludgeworth). The group occupies musical territory that's all their own, unabashedly poppy and punky -- without bearing any resemblance to mall punk, by the way -- and the mixture is strangely timeless. Their self-titled debut album could have come out in 1988, 1998, 2008, or 2018. Opening track "Better Days" sounds like vintage Naked Raygun, right down to the buzzsaw guitar and the chorus of "whoooaaaas" peppered throughout. The group's lyrics are decidedly un-PC (in a refreshing way) and the songs deal with love in a perspective rarely seen in pop; the narrator is sending his exes kiss-offs instead of miss-you missives.

Through it all, though, the group writes music that's lifting and life-affirming, informed by the spirit of punk days past, when bands wrote their own twisted pop and refashioned it to fit their purposes. This ethic carries on throughout the length of the album allowing screeds like "She Lies" and "Glass Gone" to sit comfortably alongside the inspirational "Lift Me Up." It's this tuneful dichotomy that sets MagnaFUx apart form the rest of the pack and makes them a hell of a lot of fun to listen to.

Ok, ok... i'm starting to regret asking people to watch this movie.  Look, if you have a faith that is easily challenged, and you are perfectly comfortable believing what you do now, then by all means DO NOT see this movie.  This movie is going to challenge you to verify what you believe in.  I know the whole Christian thing is hanging people up, but lets look at it objectively.  There are historical records of Jesus.  The movie itself even mentions three of them, and the discredited account of Josephus as well.  It uses this lack of a written record as evidence that Jesus must have just been some construct of the "men behind the curtain" that was created to further subjugate us.  It never mentions that the gospels themselves are all eyewitness transcripts, in a way, of christ's life.  As are the letters to and from Paul, the gnostic scriptures, the hidden gospels of Thomas, and God knows how many other treatises that the "church" has hidden from us over the centuries "for our own good."  The fact is this:  the incidental stuff doesn't matter.  It does not matter what day he was born on, if his mother was a virgin or not, how many disciples he had, the three kings and a star in the east, etc.  These are things that have been and can be manipulated, exagerrated, even translated differently depending on what kind of message they want to impart in His name.  What He said and did are the things that matter. Those truths about love and forgiveness and the golden rule; about eternity, oneness, and or relationship with The Creator, those things cannot be impuned by doubt because they ring true within us, right?  If you can feel God in your heart then that should be the basis of your faith not what some asshole in Rome 2000 years decided would keep us all calm.  So, relax.  Isn't it better to know what kind of bullshit they are trying to feed you, even if it challenges your faith?  Furthermore, do not get hung up on the religious aspect of the film and let that be a catalyst to the dismissal of the rest of it.  Leave the faith stuff out of it completely if you must and just watch parts 2 and 3.  But if you watch the whole thing and feel adrift spiritually, then let that be the impetus toward a new and more honest understanding of "salvation."  I could recommend all kinds of books on the topic, but i know no one fucking reads anything bigger than a blog these days.  Suffice it to say that you have a soul, (you are aware of it aren't you?) and that, in and of itself, should be all the evidence you need to have faith in God.  Now the IRS on the other hand... I for one will not be paying income tax ever again.  Fuck the Rockefellers, fuck the FRB, and fuck this one party system!  And while we're at it fuck Bono, MTV (remember "rock the vote?"), and Obama for making people believe that voting will change much less fix one single thing.  What does it mean to be free?  What does it take to be free?  Free of what, from what, to do what, to be what?  Are you free?  What would have to change to make you so, and can you get there from here?  I believe we are at a tipping point.  Within the next few years the world (the USA for sure) will be in an intractable state of stupidity.  5000 cable channels in HD, PS 2, and a new Mac Book with all the porn i can stand to download day and night; prozac, lunesta, viagara, liquor, xanex, terrorism, high crime areas, RFID chips in yr chicken noodle soup, cameras everywhere, stay in your homes and be grateful that these smart important men are protecting you from the world at large... we are almost past the point of no return.  We will as a body will have become so numb and detatched from the actual turning of the wheels that it will take centuries to recapture our inalienable rights.  The time is indeed now.  We are either going to fight this, or hit the snooze button and roll over!  Ask me what i plan to do if you give a shit.  I could go on and on.....

you have got to be kidding me!  did anyone catch the state of the union address last night?  i would like to know what union these fuckers are living in?  all of the optimistic double speak, all of the standing ovations, promises and more promises... did you recognize one person in that room of floating heads that actually represents you?  these are a bunch of rich rich people, they are all in the top 2% of the nation's wealth and they are somehow supposed to be a representation of the "people?"  i don't know anyone who is going to lose thier ass if we don't compete in a "world economy."  everyone i know is having enough trouble getting by in the local economy!  please explain to me how the fed cutting interest rates is going to help me buy groceries this week?  our politicians talk a whole lot of smack and nothing actually gets done.  nothing even changes from party to party.  i get the distinct impression that they are all just playing good cop bad cop with us, keeping us divided (thus conquered), and all the while there is some giant sell-off going on right under our noses.  these fuckers behave like corporate CEO's that know the inside scoop.  they put on a brave front, tell everyone in the company to be positive, work a little harder and all of this will turn itself around, meanwhile they are selling off thier juiced stocks and preparing for a quick getaway to the island they bought in the dutch antilles!!  i feel like we have been sold to china and just haven't seen the papers yet.  that is the state of the union.  if you have the temerity to actually vote for president ask yourself this question:  who counts the votes?  do you trust these assholes to give you the honest count?  even though the popular vote means nothing... even though the last two elections were fraught with fraud and deception... even though the votes are tabulated by machines that are in the control of the people who are trying to be elected... and even though the media won't even report on all of the candidates... lets pretend that all of that is just a coincidence... do you trust these liars to tell the truth about the numbers when it all comes out?  if 80% of the people in this country voted for ron paul, for example, do you think they would tell us, or do you think the news would look exactly as it does today, tonight, next week.  the truth is, the union has been co-opted by the wealthy, and it is too late to wrest it back by voting.  wake the fuck up!  there can be no bloodless revolution.  not anymore, we are past the point of no return.  when we get out of bed some morning in november and the saudi's want to collect on the 14 billion dollar bailout of citicorp, and the chinese want to collect on the @%*& billion dollar aid package, etc... and our "leaders" have all absconded with the paltry remains of our national treasury, then who gets to be president?!  will it matter then?  they are pissing it away in front of our faces and have the gaul to give each other standing ovations!  it is just too much.

April 19, 1993 is a date we should never forget.  The federal government, our government, murdered over 75 men, women, and children on this date in Waco Texas, and then summarily exonerated themselves from any wrong doing.  They are pretty sure they've gotten away with it too.  We have new dates to remember like 9-11.  There have been many new tragedies and headlines since that year to disuade us from any outrage over Waco like Columbine and now the "Virginia Tech Massacre."  The news today will certainly remind us of Oklahoma City and the "crazy terrorist," Tim McViegh.  I would like to urge everyone to use the web today, and look up Waco.  Remember that there are plenty of articles in circulation that have been planted there on purpose by the people that would love for you to be confused about this.  "Opposing views on the tragedy at Waco," is what they will call this shit.  Just remember that the truth, the honest to God truth about what happened, cannot have an "opposing view."  That's why it's called the truth.  The best info i have found on the subject comes from a place called the "Cato Institute," and a documentary called, "Waco, The Rules Of Engagement."  Please, just for today, investigate these circumstances for yourself.  Let the mother-fuckers that are watchiong our every internet move see that we haven't forgotten 4-19.  And please, comment here if you want.  Any discourse on this subject is better than the usual MTV attention span that we afford to real issues.  Argue with me, tell me I'm a conspiracy theorist, tell me I'm an idiot; just do some digging, ask some questions and don't ever let this be forgotten.  It was a grave milestone, a gravestone i guess, in the impending demise of a once great country, a once great ideal.  Question authority, seek the truth, and tell the fucking Fed, "DON'T TREAD ON ME!"

ok, for the record.  howard k stern murdered anna nicole smith and her son by some rare bahamian poison which they cannot as yet identify.  he kept her all juiced up on heroin so that he could procure a paternity test on the new infant without her knowledge, like he swabbed her while she was on the nod.  he knows the child is his; and with the mother and sibling of the baby mysteriously dead, he becomes the sole executer of her estate by right of being the baby's closest living relative (father).  even if thier marriage was a sham, which is still debateable and wouldn't get him the money outrigt anyway, the kid belonging to him legally entitles him as the trustee of any money that was bequeathed to the little one. did you see that fake weeping spell on extra?!  i mean come on!  he set out from the very begining to get her money.  the only reason he is pretending to be against the paternity testing is to divert attention from the fact that these people dropped dead of "mysterious" circumstances and he is such an obvious culprit.  just remember you heard it here first.  and now enough of the celebrity shit!  the suffering of the upper classes should not intrest anyone because as henry chinaski so eloquently put it, "hey Tully, baby, no body suffers like the poor."

ok.  here it is.  for everyone that wants to know what's going on with the mighty magnafux; we are in the proccess, again, of sharpening up the songs with a new drummer so that we can get them recorded and finally.... finally get them out to you, the wonderful and loyal fuxheads!  we will be doing some shows just as soon as everyone feels comfortable enough with the new guy to get out there and wreck some shit.  i would love to put up some different somgs on the page here, but we don't have a good version of anything until we record.  be patient... it is coming, and when its finally done it will have been worth the wait.  we love you all.  give us another couple weeks and we'll put on one hell of a show fer ya.

the new drummer is Pat Buckley.  suffice it to say he rocks and you should come check him and us out at our next show.  any suggestions as to venue?  how about a freebie at the mutiny?  anybody wanna rock the mutiny!!

just wanted to post a thank you to a band we played with on Friday, St. Patty's.  i can't find a myspace site for them, so i thought i would post it here in case they come snifffing around looking for us.  in spite of some mechanical difficulties, and playing last to a dwindling crowd, these guys (and grrrl) put on a courageous and rocking set!  i just thought it needed to be said.

thanks again, we should try that again some time soon.

“…And our wretched history

Channel 39, channel 50, channels 2, 5, 7, and 9.  Forget that there are simple answers.  Forget that there are children at every ceremony: more every day.  Steve and Astrid are due for twins!  Even PBS leans on the bellicose like a roof on rafters.

Steve knows every capital of every country in the world.  GNP, language spoken, currency, the whole bit.  His will be geographers, prostitutes, historians, junkies.

They took all the recommended measures to become doubled.  Pills and tests and frozen sperm, it worked the first or second try.

“With intelligence reporting a possible dirty bomb, 3M stock rose one dollar.”

They will be girls with dark hair.  Babies with bright eyes, voracious for treachery.  Twins always come early.

Plumb

A washer is tied to the end.  It makes the whole thing hang straight down.  It makes an explicit line.  It floats here behind the lady with the camera.  She is peeking secretly at one of those top-side viewers.  She clicks looking the other way, and stretches while she clicks, and yawns.  Her back and arms are very nice.  She is sneaky, adjusting the ashtrays.

If I pull this washer it will change her light and she will look.

The manager strolls from this corner to that, checking things, giving clear orders to his wait staff.  He looks like a warden or a dentist.  He talks to her briefly, smiling.  A girl.  The ashtrays will be the foreground.  She is too good.
