Barack Obama "Top Friends" placement
Current mood: curious
Category: News and Politics

Hello to all of the Senator Obama friends that may have ventured here by way of the profile picture being put in the "official" top friends list.

Welcome to my personal page which is mostly made up of family and friends and some of the causes that I believe in and support.

I have to say that when I received the message from the Barrack page last week asking if they could have permission to put me on their top friends list, I was a little perplexed.  Why that was is because in these days of political volunteerism and fund raising I've become a bit more cynical than in previous campaigns.  I am probably a lot like many of you in that I had caught the "O" fever way back when he gave his speech at the Democratic convention.  I am a registered Democrat and have pretty much voted along those lines for the majority of my voting life.  Given the current administration, it's fairly obvious as to why.  Shortly after that speech and ensuing election, I told many of my friends that were/are politically minded that we would have either a woman (Clinton) or an African American (Obama) as President in 2008.  As you may have expected, it was pretty much dismissed as never going to happen.  I guess it doesn't look so far-fetched these days now does it?

I am the type of person that will carefully evaluate the candidates and then make my decision about a week before the primaries as to whom I will vote for.  I believe that it is our duty to carefully examine whom we give our vote to and not follow blindly like so many other sheeple in the world.  I started donating to the Senator Obama campaign when he announced and have continuously up until recently.  That is when I put my contributions on "temporary hold" and I'll give you the reason why shortly here.

For my personal possible choices currently are those that I believe are actually electable in the National election,  Senator Obama, Senator Clinton and ex Vice President Gore. (if he jumps in the race)

Al Gore is making some very worthwhile changes to how the world looks at itself and the effects of "Global Warming."  He also has experience in the White House and what appears to be a genuine concern for our country.

Senator Clinton is very well spoken, intelligent and brings 8 years of knowing what happens behind the scenes inside the White House.  She has so far in the debates come across to me as very Presidential sounding.

Senator Obama is a very enthusiastic motivational speaker not unlike when I remember hearing JFK when I was younger.  He is very idealistic and caught my attention with speaking about "everyone counts" and "listening to the grassroots" supporters.

I would have no problem at this point voting for any of those candidates in the National election.  The edge up until May I gave to Obama and then that is when I stopped my recurring contributions to his campaign.  The short answer would be to say it was because of the "MySpaceGate" issue, but it's much more complex than that.  I believe that as a country, it is our rightful duty to challenge anything that we feel is unjust and try to have it rectified.  If we challenged the current pResident when he set forth his plan of misinformation in the beginning, we may well have averted this illegal and immoral war that we are losing family and friends everyday for.  I've had relatives in Iraq and friends are still there.  It sucks to think that you'll get that phone call about him/her not being with us any longer and then you get angry thinking about why we are there in reality.  I challenge that with letters to the administration, congress, senate and march in every Pro-Peace event I can get to.  I was angry when 911 happened as I lost a friend in the WTC towers on that day; however the anger should have been directed to the proper person/place instead of using it as a tool for invading Iraq.  For those that remember, we went from having world support like never before and the pResident took that to being currently one of the most hated countries in the world.  That is sad and that is why I challenge what a person is all about when they ask for my vote!

I am prepared to resume my contributions to Senator Obama if I can indeed feel comfortable about his managing of his staff again in the future.

This brings me back to why I was perplexed about the message to be put in the top friends list on the "official" page.  I have written many emails, messages and postage letters to the Senator that have gone unanswered or replied in kind with canned responses.  I wonder what the purpose was for choosing my profile out of the 133,000+ available friends?  Was it because I have asked hard questions about "MySpaceGate?"  Was it just because I made a cool logo with Senator Obamas image included?  These things have made me wonder what the real reason I was "randomly" chosen for the top friends list?  Are those in charge of this part of his MySpace page looking at the content of those that they choose to add to the top friends?

The message that was sent to me requesting me to be on it said:

Hi, Papa 2 Girls! ..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />..:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

"Thanks for making this MySpace profile in support of Barack. We've been looking at your page, and we really appreciate the work you've put into it. So we'd like to put you in our top friends set on Barack's official MySpace."

Please reply with your email address so we can feature you.

You will be notified when your profile appears in our top friends.

Thanks again for all you do,

Jasett @ Obama HQ  (6/29/07)

I guess time will tell on some of these questions as they said in the current message telling me that I was added:

Hi, Papa!

We just wanted to follow up and let you know that we've moved you to our top friends space. We do get a large quantity of requests to be in our top friends, so we can only leave people up for about a week.

Thanks for being a part of our movement for change,

Rebecca @ Obama HQ  (7/5/07)

As far as my hopes for Senator Obama:

I hope he can put an end to the "MySpaceGate" issue with a response in the appropriate venue.

I hope that he can manage his campaign staff in the future to not make any more mistakes that can/will come back to hurt him in the future.

I hope that if he doesn't win the primary, he will accept the role as Vice President and learn from hopefully 8 years of running the White House and gain some valuable experience to then become President for 8 more.

I hope that he can follow through with his words he so eloquently shares with all of us and not become just another political figure like so many others.

Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts on Senator Obama and I wish him well in the future!  I would encourage any of those that are not familiar with "MySpaceGate" to go to the website about it at www.myspace.com/dotherightthingbarack and remember that is a page that was created by and for Barack Obama supporters.

Here's to hoping Barack can do the right thing

**UPDATE 7/9

I guess that question got answered as to what their true intentions were!  I guessed as much since they have a track record of taking actions before thinking them through.  When they sent me the initial request to be added to their "Top Friends" list, I was going to ask them if they really checked to see what a persons views were on their profile before adding them.  Then I realized that I would just let it run it's course to see how they would handle the situation.  I'm happy I took that course of action since they only reaffirmed their inexperienced methods yet once again.

For clarification purposes, they said (as stated above) that they get a large quantity of requests so they can only leave people up for about a week.  At first read of this I knew it was false since 1) there have been people on that list for a month or more (I have screen shots of that) 2) I never requested to be in their Top Friends list to begin with 3) My personal page had nothing promoting Barack Obama on it with the exception of his profile picture in my top friends list (right next to Senator Clintons BTW) 4) Which left the cool little logo picture of Barack inside a question mark (which means to question him BTW)

So I guess Jasett and Rebecca @ Obama HQ didn't get the memo about,  "The campaign said the new policy is to ensure that senior staff will review materials before they are distributed publicly" or it doesn't apply to the procured website?

In summary; more bad publicity and bruised supporters have resulted from the "Official" site than ever did from the "Unofficial" one which TeamObama touted as one of their concerns for not having control of it themselves.  Rookie mistakes from someone that is asking for our vote to run this country.  No more time to reign in your staff Senator Obama, ignoring the polls by touting fundraising will not get you elected.  Do the Right Thing!

It occurs to me that most, if not all of us, are here for a reason:

Some of us are here for Joe Anthony. Although most of us don't really know Joe A. on a personal level, we came to the site he created looking for ways to support Senator Barack Obama. In the short span of about two years, Senator Obama had inspired us in a way that few modern politicians have even attempted. In Obama we saw a man who spoke like a Kennedy, MLK Jr., Jefferson and Lincoln; he told us he had a dream that all men were created equal and that each of us should ask not what our country could do for us, but strive to see what we could do for it, and those around us. Many of us can credit Joe Anthony for raising our awareness about Senator Obama and invigorating our interest by providing an independent community where we could collaborate and support the senator.

We are mostly ordinary folks, people who had more or less lost faith in the political system; we looked to Senator Obama for leadership toward a new system that truly represented the American people. Tens of thousands of us contributed to this man's campaign through the MySpace community that Joe Anthony created and maintained loyally for over two years.

Despite the accomplishments we made, Senator Obama's staff destroyed the community that we had bolstered with both our time and money. Unfortunately for Senator Obama, the resonating message is that his fine words were icing on the cake covering the same old top down machine. His staff has left many of us wondering if they were just milking us for our dollars, repaying our loyalty with scorn. As of yet, no official from the Obama camp has sent an adequate message that tells us otherwise.

Most of us are not comfortable contributing any further to this campaign unless there are some changes. To start, we would like to hear a sincere public apology to Joe Anthony as well as the rest of the Netroots community that have given so much. We would like any misleading statements that have been put out by campaign officials to be clarified; even slight implications of extortion are disgusting and insulting to members of this community. In Doing the Right Thing, the Obama campaign will have renewed our faith in his ability to empower the Grassroots and Netroots network that supported his campaign even before he entered the presidential race.

I am rarely able to give anything remotely near the federal limits to any candidate, but I have always tried to give a few dollars to those I believe in. To this end, I am offering a pledge to the Obama campaign to continue my contributions when he Does the Right Thing, and I am asking you to join me.

Maybe I am the only one that is willing to do this. Maybe this is a crazy notion. I think that it is time to let the Obama campaign know that we want a sincere and speedy resolution, and that we are willing to put our money where our mouths are. I am volunteering to be the John Hancock of our community:

I, Anthony Watkins, hereby pledge to donate $25.00 immediately when the campaign rights its wrong. I will donate an additional $25.00 each quarter as long as Obama is a candidate or nominee until the general election.

I may end up looking like a fool. I may be the only one willing to make this statement. But if I am not and you wish to join me in pledging frozen donations, please add a comment here that states your name and the amount you wish to donate when the campaign placates our concerns.

Thanks, Anthony Watkins

 Obama Statement on Bush Veto of Stem Cell BillChicago, IL | June 20, 2007

CHICAGO, IL - Senator Obama today released the following statement in response to President Bush's veto of Stem Cell Bill "By vetoing funding for stem cell research once again, the President is deferring the hopes of millions of Americans who do not have the time to keep waiting for the cure that may save or extend their lives. The promise that stem cells hold does not come from any particular ideology, it is the judgment of science, and we deserve a President who will put that judgment first and make this promise real for the American people."

We, at Do the Right Thing, Barack would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Senator Obama for his statement regarding President Bush's shameful veto of the latest Stem Cell Research Bill. It seems that once again the current administration is ignoring the feelings and wishes of the majority of American citizens on this important and potentially life saving issue. There are millions of people living with chronic, disabling, and life threatening illnesses who truly could be helped by the amazing scientific and medical advances being made every day, and we sincerely hope that the next administration will take this matter into serious, and thoughtful consideration! Thank you Senator Obama for standing up and "doing the right thing" by listening to the thoughts and ideas of the people, in regard to this continuing debate on stem cell research!

Thank you from your Friends at DtRTB :)

We're happy to hear that there seems to be some action taking place on this "mistake" and only hope that he will step up and Do the Right Thing on MySpaceGate.

It is a bit disheartening when these little "mistakes" keep popping up and makes us wonder if it shows a disconnect from his campaigns daily activities?

Obama calls memo on Clinton a 'dumb mistake'

Says he didn't know campaign staff referred to his rival as 'D-Punjab'

..> ..>
Barack Obama
Democratic presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., speaks during a town hall meeting on June 18, 2007, in Newton, Iowa.

*excerpts from article:

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama labeled the memo and its headline — "Hillary Clinton (D-Punjab)" — as "unnecessarily caustic."

~~~~~
"It was a dumb mistake on our campaign's part and I made it clear to my staff in no uncertain terms that it was a mistake," Obama told the AP in a brief interview.
~~~~~

Placing the blame on his staff is not new. Earlier this year, Obama faulted his staff for comments in a dispute with the Clinton camp over Hollywood donor David Geffen.

~~~~~
Takes responsibility for mistake
In a statement on his Web site, Obama said he was not aware of the contents of the memo before it was distributed. The Illinois senator said he was responsible for the mistake and the campaign had taken appropriate action "to prevent errors like this from happening in the future."
Here's an interesting little tidbit for you all to ponder on...MSNBC even offers us a little chuckle here too. Perhaps this is to remind the candidates that social networking sites such as MySpace truly are an incredibly valuable tool to reach out to potential voters. We can already see that social networking is making an impact and getting people involved in the political process again! That's got to be a good thing, right?
This is a just a quick glimpse into the article, where they review the MySpace profiles of many of the 2008 Presidential candidates. You can check out the entire article at MSNBC.com using this link. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19213575
Any comments? Post them here.
The era of the presidential debate is over. Candidates complain they don't get enough time to address questions fully, and voters are too busy watching "Nanny 911" to hear the answers.
With so many candidates and so little time between summer run Reality TV shows, the only thing that matters now is social networking skills.
In the first of a three-part Netiquette series, I've invited co-avatar Ree Hines help rate candidate ability to use medium of the people — most especially; MySpace. If you can't choose a candidate based on his or her MySpace profile, why even bother voting?
Barack's MySpace profile is surprisingly amateurish given the fact that so much energy went into obtaining it from the Barack fan who opened it. Most text is written in unprofessional 12-point Arial font. And much like the older candidates, Barack failed to use the "interest" fields correctly.
Helen: Barack's headline is a little mind-control creepy, but it must be working. Check out that six-digit friend count! He's a MySpace rock star! And, according to his profile, straight too.
Ree: Yes, please note the use of "Official" in the headline. This is the MySpace page Barack totally manifest destinied. I could almost see beyond this profile's mad grab for power if it weren't for the fact that he's also created his own social network: My.BarackObama.com! He's taking over faster than Google! How long until he's offering us Campaign ads tailored to our browsing habits? Frankly, I'm a little scared."
Kudos to Obama! Written by daisyfullofhope and tara (grasshopper)
June is Pride Month, stand up for LGBT rights!
Dear Senator Obama,
Kudos to you Mr. Obama! We would like to take a moment to thank you for your positive statement in support of LGBT rights, and for acknowledging the importance of Pride Month. We think that it is an important first step that you have taken a stand, and called for the repeal of the U.S. Military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. In addition, we thank you for your comments in support of Civil Unions and the fact that all couples should be granted full rights, have the freedom to live their lives, and love who they wish. Further, we agree that any form of hate crimes are inexcusable; they must not be tolerated, and those responsible must be held accountable and punished.
The promise and the hope of a better, more tolerant world, rests in the hands of all of us, but only a select few are in a position of power to make sure that policies are in place that end discrimination and oppression in any and all forms.
In our journey toward change, we must all come together to heal the divides, and break down the walls that keep us apart and unequal. Love is universal and it should be a right for each and every person in our great nation. Thank you again Senator Obama!
Sincerely, Your Supporters and Friends at "Do the Right Thing, Barack"
There has been word spreading the last few days about a connection between Colin Powell and Barack Obama. The buzz started this past Sunday when Gen. Powell appeared on Meet the Press.
Opinions seem to vary. Those opinions include a group on BarackObama.com created to Draft Colin Powell into the Obama Campaign.
Any opinions, here, on whether a formal link between Obama and Powell would be a good thing or otherwise?
Welcome to the Club, Millenials
So this Obama MySpace profile screw-up is interesting.  I have a few calls in to the campaign to get their side, since most of what we know is coming from Micah Sifrey's excellent article at Techpresident.  I expect it'll probably generate some TV coverage, just because it's such a fresh angle on campaigns.
The narrative is as follows.  A volunteer named Joe Anthony started an unofficial MySpace page for Obama in 2004.  When the Presidential campaign started up, Chris Hughes (who co-founded Facebook) and Scott Goodstein, both of whom worked for the Obama campaign, reached out to Anthony and began working with him.  Anthony was fine at first, but it became more and more work to manage the page.  On the flip side, the Obama people became more concerned about control.  Eventually, the Obama people asked to purchase the page, Anthony gave them a price of $39,000.  Instead of negotiating a price, the Obama campaign claimed they did not have the money, accused Anthony of seeking a 'big pay day' and went to MySpace management and seized the page directly, losing 160,000 MySpace friends in the process.  Anthony is now embittered and speaking out about the campaign's treatment of him.
I don't know what happened on the campaign side.  It sounds like wires were crossed.  It's possible that the internet department actually didn't have the money in its budget, which is sad in terms of the campaign priorities.  It's possible that Chris or Scott was promising something without authority, or that someone is just lying.  Or maybe Joe Rospars or David Axelrod got involved and just demanded that the campaign control the page and acted as if the campaign was being blackmailed.  Regardless, it seems like there is a tone at work here, a tone that comes from the top.
There is nothing unusual about such a conflict between the open world of Joe Anthony and the gatekeeping world of David Axelrod.  The open world is fairly relaxed and encourages sharing control and power with all stakeholders.  The gatekeeper world is all about control and turning everyone into a signholder.  The likely scenario here is that the Obama internet team promoted the unofficial page because it was cool and relaxed, and then adult supervision scared them into believing they needed control.  They put pressure on Anthony, who valued his own work.  The Obama campaign couldn't both stomach the need for control and the real moral need to value the work done by Anthony, and so it appears the campaign just lied and threatened him.  This is standard Democratic politics, only when you put it on the internet, it looks really bad.
I don't really know that this episode is particularly important in the context of who will win in 2008, but it is interesting.  This is the exact definition of a campaign treating people like an ATM.  And this brings me back to the movement that's being created, because while this seems like a small episode, it's actually events like this that in some ways help form our movement.  Joe Anthony will never forget this, and it's pretty obvious he's good at leading large groups of people.  Anthony will never trust campaign operatives again, and hopefully, he'll plug into the Democratic Party somewhere else.
Jonathan Chait yesterday wrote about how the blogosphere was formed in the crucible of 2000.  That's not quite right.  The open left was formed in the wake of a series of events, starting with the impeachment (Moveon) and continuing probably until 2008.  The blogosphere is one of the manifestations of the open left, and it's a response to the institutional failure of the Democratic and media leadership to lead.  For some of us, like for Anthony in 2008, the way the 2004 campaigns operated were one of these shocks.
The Kerry campaign was a significant personal experience for many of us coming into politics for the first time from other professions.  It was there that we learned how unprofessional, arrogant, top-down, and dishonest most parts of the Democratic Party really were.  That experience was deeply embittering, especially because the Dean campaign had a much freer model of politics in terms of allowing citizens space to grow and wield power and the Kerry campaign did not.
Obama is a symbol of what politics could be, which is why he's bringing in huge crowds, because the public wants a different type of politics and is willing to pay for it and support it with time, effort, and sweat.  We were a vanguard, and we had this moment too, in 1998, 2000, 2002, or 2004.  But like our experience of being rebuffed by a hostile Democratic Party, this new generation of Obama supporters is smashing smack dab into the old structures of power.  It's a bit ironic that the people they are smashing into are professionals from the Dean campaign, those who ran the DNC from 2005 onward.  But really, this is about architecture, not personality, and the person who bears responsibility for sitting atop a throne and hating on the activists who want to do things for him is Barack Obama, and to  a lesser extent, David Axelrod.
I've been criticizing Obama for several years, and the reason is because of I sense he surrounds himself with people who have this hostility to participation in politics.  I remember being screwed over by Democrats, consistently, from 2003 until I came to MyDD as an independent blogger.  I remember what it's like to be taken for granted, to be insulted, to be ripped off, to be lied to.  Its not a good thing, not just on a personal level, but on a structural level.  It's not a sustainable model of politics because it drives leaders like Joe Anthony away.  And fundamentally, we cannot win as a progressive movement until we stop this nonsense and actually buy into progressive structures that treat people well and act professionally.  I feel bad for the people in the Obama campaign who went through this.  They are under untenable pressure from higher-ups who don't respect them, and they don't have the leverage to really wield power.  I feel bad for Anthony, who went through what a lot of us went through over the last few years.  Eating shit is never fun.
My sense though is that 2008 is going to see a lot more of this kind of shoddy treatment of stakeholders.  A huge wave of new people are going to come into politics over the next few years, and they are going to smash into the same barriers we smashed into in 2002 and 2004.  Some of the leaders are going to feel betrayed, like we felt betrayed, and hopefully, they will join us in building a more people-powered movement that doesn't rely on media-driven cults of personality and top-down operators who lie, smear, and cheat.
Democratic campaigns cannot and should not be run based on lies and threats.  This is the old system.  I hope Obama takes some time to reassess his campaign and the way he interacts with supporters.  This should be a warning flag.
techPresident had this interesting snippet in their Daily Digest yesterday ...
OpenSecrets.org has just released first-quarter expenditure numbers for all of the candidates, and while it would take weeks to analyze the amount of data they've released, Chris Bowers has a good analysis going. Barack Obama spent more than the others in almost all of the categories, and he far and away spent the most on "Internet Media" -- $299,000 -- which, as Bowers notes, is five times more than the rest of the field combined.
I will be interested in finding out where all the $299,000 went that TeamObama spent on "Internet Media" in the Q1 2007. I also wonder how much of that went to .. Joe Rospars, his company Blue State Digital; Josh Orton; Chris Hughes, his consulting practice (mentioned here); Scott Goodstein, and/or his company Catalyst Campaigns.
Now a new drama is coming from the Obama campaign's Internet Team. This time it doesn't involve stealing a fan's website. Instead, it involves a partnership with Facebook that may have broken FEC rules. The details are still sketchy, but techPresident and Daily Kos both have excellent write-ups on it.
techPresident: Did Facebook Play Favorites with Obama?
Daily Kos: Obama, Facebook, and the Law
For those who have time to look into this further, please post your summaries of the situation, thoughts on it, and further links here.
Thanks!
