one cannot escape, nor should they, the earth's warning signs.

consumerism is choking our planet -- OUR planet -- and we do have a say about that.

each time we purchase an item, we are endorsing it. "yes, i vote for this item" is what we are saying.

so we need to be mindful of what the item is made of and take it a step further by giving thought to how will it be discarded once we no longer need it. will it biodegrade or will it forever stay in our landfills?

do we really need to purchase cheap plastic patio chairs, or can we use something else instead? do we really need plastic jig-a-ma-bobs that plug into electrical sockets to make our house smell better? is it really necessary to seal electronics in those clear hard plastic encasements that are so hard to open? (i fear that i'll surely cut my hand wide open one day).

consider buying second hand items such as clothes, dishes, and accessories so that less of these will need to be produced, thereby reducing production, thereby reducing pollution, and so on. with so many "things" already in the world, do we really need to manufacture MORE? how about doing with less?

be less of a consumer.

we are so often smothered with the events of the world and the weight can be crushing, indeed. politics, religious wars, disasters, cruel acts, and greed dominate the corporate media.

so what can we do? it's all so BIG and that can allow us to feel unimportant in the scheme of things.

one of my best friends gave me these words long ago -- "when it all becomes too much, remember that what we can control is our own environment. so create a peaceful home, a place where you are safe and things that bring good memories and that are pleasing to look at surround you".

OK, so she didn't say those EXACT words but i catch her drift.

hope you do, too.

wanna be with you
read to you
have you
have you near

free associate with you
be bleary eyed with you
take a long ride
or two or three with you

stay away from bread
and instead
peel a grape for you
bbq a steak for you
can't hardly wait
til you wanna wanna, too.

see you first & last
when i open close my eyes
wanna feel your heart strings pull for me
oh? surprise! they are?

wanna get a dog with you
& name him some funny thing
& everytime we say his name
'twill remind us of a secret

let's go to farmer's market
& select our dinner fare
shall we get this peach
or this pear?

wanna lay with you
spend another day with you
find a painted cave with you
wonder about the world with you
let go of all my cares with you
never bore you
won't ask more of you
than you are willing to

fulfilling needs
plant some seeds
then watch them grow
never mind
we ain't got no dough
to go fancily

wanna feel this way
for a good long while.

everything can be a song to a songwriter. everything. picasso once said "the artist is the receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing stranger, from a spider's web".

genius.

it is my hope that you might hear a theme or phrase you can connect to somehow. hell, sometimes after writing i'll surprise even my self when i see what appears on the page. i say "damn! where'd that come from?"

should you care to write a comment (is that blogging? i'm not sure) be cool, be kind, be positive, ok?

ps. any daniel lanois fans out there? i hear something new from him is in the wind very soon. check out his site.

more soon
