A Fresh Brewed Faith
Gwen Smith

Today's Truth
"He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:29-31, NIV)

Friend To Friend
Every morning, I walk straight to the coffee pot and push the ON button. I'm a total coffee girl. I like a piping-hot, extra dark roast with half and half, and I struggle to function without my first cup of coffee. I crave that first sip and relish the warmth of the mug in my hands. I jokingly call it my "warm, happy friend." My mornings just wouldn't be the same without coffee! :-)

We should have the same attitude about our faith.  We should wake up each morning bursting at the seams to be with God. To be in His presence. To listen for His still small voice. To savor Him. A faith that is brewed fresh daily strengthens us, renews us, and enables us to mount up with wings like eagles. To experience the power of God in our lives. To run and not grow weary. To walk and not faint.

This energizing, percolated faith is readily available to all who ask, seek and knock (Matthew 7:7-8). How can you experience this power in your life? By getting alone with God, reading the Bible, and listening for His voice each day. "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17, ESV).

Like a morning with no coffee, there are times when we are sluggish in our faith. There are times we need a shot of God-caffeine in our day. A spiritual espresso. What can we do at these times? Are there things in the Scriptures that tell us how can we strengthen and jump-start our faith? Absolutely!

One practical way to build your faith is by remembrance. When David was just a shepherd boy, he had courage to face a giant partly because he remembered the previous victories the Lord allowed him to experience. He approached King Saul with great confidence, saying: "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine" (1Samuel 17:36, NIV). His past victories fueled his faith. Ours do the same. We can face our giants with equal confidence when we pause to remember how God has worked in our past.

Corrie Ten Boom said, "Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible."

What has God brought you through in the past? Think on these things, and choose to trust Him to bring you through all you face today and tomorrow. When you trust God with a fresh brewed faith, He will be your Strength, your Sustainer, and your Hiding Place so you can run and not grow weary - walk and not be faint. Fill up your faith cup right now.

Let's Pray
Dear God, You have brought me through so many challenging times. Please give me a fresh shot of faith that equips me to live today in Your strength. Help me to trust You, and keep me from leaning on my own understanding.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Now It's Your Turn
Read 1 Samuel 17.

Consider specific times that God has moved in your life. Grab a journal and list them.

Pray for God to increase your faith and give you the strength you need for today.

More From The Girlfriends
Facing any giants? God will strengthen you for the battle! Arm yourself in the power of the Spirit of GOD (Ephesians 6:10-18). When you do, no weapon formed against you can prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Go, fight, win, girlfriend!

TODAY'S TRUTH
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." (Matthew 11:28-29, MSG)

FRIEND TO FRIEND
C.H. Spurgeon wrote, "God often sends us trials that our graces may be discovered, and that we may be certified of their existence. Besides, it is not merely discovery, real growth in grace is the result of sanctified trials. God often takes away our comforts and our privileges in order to make us better Christians. He trains His soldiers, not in tents of ease and luxury, but by turning them out them to forced marches and hard service. He makes them ford through streams, and swim through rivers, and climb mountains, and walk many a long mile with heavy knapsacks of sorrow on their backs. Well, Christian, may not this account for the troubles through which thou art passing? Is not the Lord bringing out your graces, and making them grow? Is not this the reason why He is contending with you?"

Like C. H. Spurgeon, the Bible tells us hard truths. It doesn't paint a rosy picture. It actually paints a thorny picture. It promises hardship. It assures us that in this life there will be troubles…times when we find ourselves caught between faith and a hard place.

Christianity is no free lunch. Faith in Christ doesn't shield us from troubles but it does help us through them. There are natural tensions here. Questions that beg to be asked:

Is God really all loving? Yes.
Is God always good? Yes.
Will we each find ourselves caught between faith and hard places? Yes.

Many people, churches and groups will tell you differently, but the truth remains: faith is an anchor of hope for the believer. Jesus spoke of the hard times we would face. "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33, NIV, emphasis mine).

I don't have all the answers to life's hard questions, and I don't know why His hand brings healing to some and not to others, but I do know that when we take our burdens to Jesus, we can experience peace in each hard place. God is always faithful, whether we are delivered from our hard places or through them.

As Christians, we have faith in a person, God. Faith in and of itself is meaningless, but faith in an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful, loving heavenly Father means everything…beca..use - though our problems come and go - He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

I'm not sure what hard places you face today, but God knows exactly where you are and what you're facing. When you find yourself between faith and a hard place, even in the times when you don't know what to pray, turn to the Lord. God hears every cry and loves you deeply. He's placed two Scriptures on my heart to share with you:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

"But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior." Isaiah 43:1-3a

LET'S PRAY
Dear Lord, Thanks for the reminder that I never have to walk through a trial without You. Help me to trust You in everything.....even when I don't understand. Today, I bring _____________ to You and ask that You would move powerfully in and through this burden of my heart.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

A Devotion by Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth
1 Peter 3:10-11 “Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, here’s what you do: say nothing evil or hurtful; snub evil and cultivate good; run after peace for all you’re worth” (MSG).

Friend To Friend
“I’m done with it! This battle just isn’t worth fighting!  I’m tired.  It’s hopeless.”  As I listened to my girlfriend verbally bleed from her wounded heart, I silently lifted up a prayer and asked God for wisdom.  Her pain was real.  Her troubles were not imaginary.  She was desperate.  She wanted a way out of the maze of disappointment and betrayal she had gotten lost in.  Out of the strong undertow of angst that had swept away her hope.  Out of the darkness that had covered her life and taken her captive.

No easy answers flooded my mind.  I had no slick, three-point “sermonette” to offer her. I’m not a therapist.  I don’t even play one on TV.  I’m just a Christian girl who tries to be there for her friends.  So, I didn’t feel wise or brilliant that day as I gently, but confidently said: “I think the only way to win this battle is to surrender.”

Not to the problem, but to the solution.  Not to the conflict, but to the resolution.  Both the solution and the resolution are found in the same nail scarred hands.  In order to win in any earthly struggle or relationship battle, we must put away the weapons of our wounding words, and set aside the arsenal of our angry actions.  Then with knees to the earth, we must raise a white flag in surrender…to the King.

What do we need to surrender?  Our pride and expectations…our gripes and lamentations…our calculated manipulations…our righteous indignation…everything.
In order to live victoriously and win the battles we face in life, we’ve just got to surrender our flesh to the Spirit.

Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing”
(1 Peter 3: 8-9) MSG.

On the battlefield of war, when we raise the white flag of surrender, we lose.  But on the battlefield of life, when we surrender, we win – if, and only if we surrender to God and not to our circumstances.  We cannot control the variables beyond our own responses, but God will surely bless the woman that walks in obedience to Him.

In a public address titled “Absolute Surrender,” Andrew Murray said: “God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him. The condition for obtaining God's full blessing is absolute surrender to Him.”

Are you ready to wave that white flag?  Blessings await you, friend.

Let’s Pray
Lord, This is such a tough one!  My life is complicated.  It is very hard for me to relinquish control, yet I know that You are calling me to do just that.  Help me to surrender my life into Your hands.  Please dissolve my resentment, anger, fears and frustrations.  Help me to choose Your ways, so that I can obtain the full blessings of absolute surrender.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Take a moment to thoughtfully consider what barriers exist in your heart that keep you from being willing to surrender.

Pray that God would crush those barriers for His purposes.

Meditate on the lyric of this famous classic hymn as you lift your heart in surrendered worship:

I SURRENDER ALL
Words by: J.W. Van Deventer and Music by: W.S. Weeden
All to Jesus, I surrender
All to Him I freely give
I will ever love and trust Him
In His presence daily live

I surrender all
I surrender all
All to Thee, my blessed Savior
I surrender all

All to Jesus I surrender
Humbly at His feet I bow
Worldly pleasures all forsaken
Take me, Jesus, take me now

All to Jesus, I surrender
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine
Let me feel the Holy Spirit
Truly know that Thou art mine

All to Jesus, I surrender
Lord, I give myself to Thee
Fill me with Thy love and power
Let Thy blessing fall on me

All to Jesus I surrender
Now I feel the sacred flame
O the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

Here's part two of the devotional I wrote for Girlfriends in God today. Hope you are challenged and spurred on toward HIS heart!!

TODAY'S TRUTH
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” (Ephesians 4:29, ESV)

FRIEND TO FRIEND
Yesterday we began to talk about living a set-apart life.  We looked at our e-lives, the time we spend on computers, and were challenged to establish healthy boundaries to protect and strengthen our faiths.  It was noted that God is the source of all holiness.  In order to live a set-apart life, we must spend time with Him and then be fueled by His Holy Spirit.  Today, we are going to consider how we can be set-apart (holy) with our words.

My ten year old son, Hunter, recently came to me with a humble confession. He said that, “because he hasn’t been spending much time with God lately, he has been grumpier and grumpier.” He quietly admitted that he has been mean to his siblings and has said some unkind things. With amazing insight, he connected the amount of time that he spent with God and in God’s Word with his behaviors ... recognizing that there was a direct correlation in his life.

Boy, could I relate to that! Tears welled up in my eyes as we spoke about this.  I told Hunter that I experience the exact same thing in my life.  That when I don’t carve out time in my day to spend with the Lord, I often say things I shouldn’t.  For that matter, even when I do read my Bible and pray, I still say and do sinful things.

There was a time in my life when I really struggled with profanity. My tongue was a loose cannon. My church friends would never have known, but when I was angry, profanity was often present ... even if only under my breath. God has delivered me from that ugly habit, but it took over ten years of prayer. In those ten years, I failed repeatedly and struggled to believe that God could change my ways.  It was a long-term process for me to be purified in my language, and I can assure you that it is only by the grace and strength of God that I can stub my toe now without needing to wash my mouth out with soap.

The Bible has so much to say on this topic! Here are just a few examples:

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." (Proverbs 12:18, NIV)

“My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.” (James 1:19-20, NIV)

“When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26, NLT)

“He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3, NIV)

This is hard stuff.  Living set-apart with our words is simply beyond us, but be encouraged, because all things are possible with God.  We need to constantly fall before the Lord and ask Him to filter our words through the Holy Spirit.  It’s important that we keep short accounts with God.  When we do, He equips us to disarm the loose cannon of our tongues.

At the end my conversation with Hunter, I told my son that one of the most amazing things about our Heavenly Father is the mercy that He greets us with when we come before Him to confess our behavior.  I said to him, and I say to you, God loves us so perfectly, that every time we turn to Him with a repentant heart, He offers us His grace. Go in His grace and live a set-apart life in the power of His Spirit today.

LET'S PRAY
Holy Father, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14, NLT)

I ask this in Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN

·         Meditate on Hebrews 4:14,16:

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

·         Now, grab your journal and throw yourself into this devotion.  What are your greatest areas of temptation and weakness regarding your words?  Confess those to God and ask Him to grant you the mercy and strength to help you live a set-apart life.

·         Read Ephesians 4.

TODAY'S TRUTH
“Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV)

FROM MY HEART TO YOURS
As Christian believers, we’re called to live set-apart lives. To be holy as God is holy. To be in the world, but not of the world. God is the source of all holiness, and in order to live a set-apart life, we must spend time with Him so we can be fueled by His Holy Spirit.

I don’t know what your days look like, but mine are pretty full. They start early and end late. Once the sun rises, it seems that coffee isn’t the only thing brewing in my house. An invisible competition brews daily that vies for my time and attention. The competitors are often “good things” that end up to be “time-robbing things” that keep me from God’s best and God’s presence.

Today I’d like to put our computer lives under a spiritual microscope. I’m an e-girl. I love my MacBook Pro computer, my iPhone, email, instant messaging, and the World Wide Web. Though I’m admittedly fully immersed in the e-life, I’m also cognizant of the fact that the e-world has become a dangerous addiction and spiritual deterrent to many. I struggle with this personally! These electronic forums host a new and efficient opportunity for us to connect with other people 24/7. While much of the social networking, online surfing, and emailing is innocent, encouraging, and fun, they clearly present us with opportunities to sin and be distracted from set-apart living.

Over the past several years, Facebook, MySpace, blogs, instant messaging, and chat rooms have replaced many face-to-face conversations and, for some, devotion time. They have become a new source of temptation for us, an opportunity to live a fantasy or a momentary escape from the daily grind.

A friend of mine recently said, “My computer whispers to me.” Yikes! Mine does, too! Though it’s embarrassing to admit, I sometimes don’t manage my time efficiently because I’ve given in to the lure of e-life by responding to the audio alert that indicates “I’ve got mail” or the notification that someone has left me a message on a social networking page of mine. As a result, I’ve robbed myself of productive time. Time I have wasted and spent unwisely.

We are warned against this in Scripture. “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV).

Now, hear me clearly on this. I’m not saying that electronic forums or computers are bad or evil in and of themselves. (For goodness sakes, you’re reading this devotion because of the amazing electronic world!) I’m simply suggesting that it would be wise for each of us to pray about the amount of time and energy we devote to these things.

How can we be set apart in our e-life? How can we establish healthy e-boundaries that will protect our purity and our time with God? Perhaps we could start by taking an honest look at the amount of time we commit to our social e-lives versus the amount of time we commit to spending in God’s Word and in His presence each day. (Did that sting? Rest assured, it stings me too.)

The good news is that we can turn to God for direction and wisdom in all of this. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5, NIV). Our gracious Lord longs for each of us to choose His best and live each day in His strength.

“God, make a fresh start in me.
Shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life.
Don't throw me out with the trash,
or fail to breathe holiness in me.
Bring me back from gray exile,
put a fresh wind in my sails!”
Psalm 51:10-12, MSG

LET'S PRAY
Today I thought it would be fitting to pray directly from Scripture. “And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light” (Colossians 1:10-12, NIV).

Father, we ask this in Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN
Let’s get practical today:

* Spend some time in thought and prayer about this subject.
* Ask God to reveal to you any e-habits that are sinful, indulgent, or inappropriate.
* Check your on-line notification settings and consider eliminating unnecessary email alerts.
* Remember that God longs for your time and attention. Be certain that you don’t choose mundane activities instead of spending time with Him.
* Read Ephesians 5:1-20.

MORE FROM GWEN
Hey, friend! It just occurred to me that one of the biggest time-sucking e-temptations for me came from the homepage I had chosen on my internet browser. I used to have my favorite cable news network set as my home page. Every time I logged on to the internet, the headlines begged me to click their links. Today I went into the settings of my internet browser and chose a blank page for my homepage. I anticipate that though it’s not overly exciting to have a blank homepage, it will allow me to be wiser with my time. Hope this spurs you on to similar responses!

The Trumpet Game
Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth
“The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”  (Zephaniah 3:17, NIV)

Friend to Friend
My friend Brad has a little girl named Elizabeth. When Elizabeth was one year old, Brad and his wife taught her sign language. For the word please, they chose to have her rub her chest. So, as Brad and Jamie taught Elizabeth to say please, they rubbed their own chests and said “please.” Simple enough.

Elizabeth had a favorite toy. It’s a plastic knobby toy that holds colorful rings. You know the one with the yellow pole and white base that, without the rings, loosely resembles a trumpet. (C’mon, use your imagination!) So, being the fun, creative parents that Brad and Jamie are, they would dump off the rings and playfully hold up Elizabeth’s toy and make a trumpet sound. Elizabeth loved her parent’s silliness. She laughed and clapped with delight. It became a favorite game in their household.

One day, when Brad and Elizabeth were playing the trumpet game, Elizabeth excitedly grabbed the toy and handed it back to him to do it again. Brad encouraged her to say “please” and reinforced the instruction by rubbing his chest. To his surprise, Elizabeth made her way over to him and started to rub his chest instead of her own.

Did this please her daddy? You bet it did!

Even though Elizabeth mixed up the signals, she communicated with her daddy. Brad was filled with love and joy by her effort. He was pleased that she came to him. Not because she did or didn’t do something right, but just because she is his daughter and he loves her. He adores her.

God adores you too. Just because you are His child. His sweet daughter. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1a).

Have you considered that perhaps God isn’t longing for you to come to Him with perfect, polished prayers that have fifty-cent words and flowery language? Have you thought about the pleasure God experiences when you simply approach him just as you are, warts and all, because He loves you? He delights in your attention. He takes pleasure when you go to Him simply because you are His.

I love how the psalmist responded to God’s love:

Praise the Lord, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
(Psalm 103:1-5)

Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, Thanks for this reminder of Your love for me.  Thanks for seeing me as precious and special.  I’m amazed by Your love.  I’m overwhelmed with thankfulness that You made a way for me to know You through Jesus Christ.   Help me to come to You as I am each day…without pretenses, pride, or perfection, but simply with Your permission to just be me…because You love me.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Read Zephaniah 3:17 again silently

Now read it again aloud

Now read it aloud three more times and insert your name after each ‘you’ –

“The LORD your God is with you (insert name here), He is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you (name), He will quiet you (name) with His love, He will rejoice over you (name) with singing.”  Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

More from the Girlfriends
When Brad shared this story with me, it melted my heart and blessed my soul.  I hope you were moved, too.  That’s really what being a GiG is all about…sharing things that move us and spur us on toward our extravagant Lord!  Glad we are doing life together!  I’d love to hear what has moved you lately…email and let me know!
