Not enough evidence for arrests in McCann case

Portuguese police have insufficient evidence to arrest anyone in the hunt to find the kidnapper of a four-year-old British girl but are focusing on the resort where she disappeared.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from her bedroom at a hotel resort in the Algarve two weeks ago as her parents dined nearby.

Chief inspector Olegario Sousa said police continued to follow their strongest lead in the investigation, which has centred on foreigners in the small Praia da Luz resort.

"The greatest concentration (of investigators) is in the Algarve and more concretely, in the zone," Chief Sousa told reporters.

"At this moment we don't have enough evidence to arrest anyone."

Chief Inspector Sousa said police had interviewed and searched the house of a computer technician in the resort, who has been identified by local media as a Russian man.

Police took computers from the house and they "are now being examined", he said.

The technician was questioned as a witness in the case but Chief Insp Sousa said a "witness can become a suspect:.

So far one suspect has been identified by police - a 33-year-old who lives in the area - but his name has not been made public.

Police searched a villa on Monday close to the resort complex from where Madeleine went missing more than a week ago and took a British man, Robert Murat, away for questioning.

A close relative of the girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, said on Thursday the parents had been overwhelmed with offers to help find their daughter.

"They have been totally overwhelmed by offers from individuals, small companies and large multinational corporations," close relative Michael Wright said in a televised statement. "Their purpose is to turn hope into action."

The McCanns launched a campaign on Wednesday, hoping to raise awareness and bring their daughter back.

Soccer stars including Britain's David Beckham and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo have made appeals for Madeleine while wealthy individuals, including author JK Rowling, have offered large rewards for information leading to her return.

Police hunting for missing Madeleine McCann are today scrutinising four pieces of "very useful" fresh information, Crimestoppers has revealed.

The tip-offs come one week after the three-year-old was taken from her holiday apartment on the Algarve.

They were among hundreds of calls made from Portugal to a special UK telephone number set up by the charity.

A spokeswoman said they have been passed to Leicestershire Police, who are working alongside Portuguese police on the case.

Some people have messaged me about correcting the profile name to Madeline or asked me why this profile is called "Maddy" and the poster is "Maddie". I think this was down to the press using all three names and I only found out today it's actually Madeline but there isn't much I can do and changing the name would mean starting again and losing all the great people we have got.

No offence and apologies.

It seems that the media have nicknamed Madeline, "Maddy". Her parents have asked for people to referr to her as Madeline saying that she wouldn't answer to Maddy in the street.

From Interpol.int

Interpol has issued a global alert following the disappearance of a three-year-old girl from a holiday resort in Portugal on 3 May.

An Interpol Yellow Notice for Madeleine McCann has been circulated to each of Interpol's 186 member countries, after the toddler went missing from an apartment in Praia da Luz in the western Algarve.

The notice was issued at the request of Portuguese authorities who are leading the investigation into the toddler's disappearance.

Interpol Yellow Notices are circulated to help locate missing persons, especially minors, or to help identify persons who are not able to identify themselves.

Anyone who has any information regarding this case is asked to contact their local police or the Portuguese authorities.

So people following this harrowing story maybe wondering "what are the police doing?", here is a break down.

Judicial police are following up 350+ potential leads, they have searched more than 500 appeartments and have interviewed some 100 people. Interpol & Europol are also liasing with police.

"Judicial Secrecy Law is imposed under Article 86 of Portugal's Penal Process Code". I myself am not to sure what this involves but I should think it limits the amount of information the police are allowed to give out that's why we are not seeing to much information.

There are also family liaison officers from Leicestershire police acting as "point of communication" and there are now British child abduction experts in Portugal who will be helping with the inquiry. British police have also forwarded information about British paedophile rings to the Portuguese and our police are also probing British paedophiles with links to the Algarve.

What about this photo fit? Well there is one and it is in more detail than we first thought. It is said to be of a male around 1.70M tall with dark skin wearing dark clothes, he maybe a local resident of Praia de Luz.

Are we going to see it? At present it doesn't look like it will be released to the public but it is said that there is a possibility that it is being shown to people who were in the area the time Maddy was taken.
