We've got some brand new items in our webshop @ http://bastardjazz.bigcartel.com

Just in time for the Holidays, we've gotten a batch of lovely Bastard Jazz new logo Shirts printed up on 100% Cotten American Apparel Tees available now in our store - cheap!

We've also stumbled upon a couple of boxes of deadstock Japanese-only Bastard Jazz - "Jazz Loves Dub" compilation CDs from 2007, still shrink wrapped with original Japanese Obi Strip inside. These beauties, compiled by DJ Kensei and totally unmixed, were previously impossible to find in the US. Contains two previously unreleased song versions "Boogaloo" and "Brazilian Swag (CCB Drift Mix)" as well as lots of Bastard Jazz classic tracks.

We've also discounted physical copies of our compilation CD "BKLYN: Heavy Sounds From The County Of Kings"  from earlier this year at $7 - priced to move! Contains original Funk, Afrobeat, Latin, Downtempo and Dance Music produced entirely by our extended friends and family here in the Borough of Brooklyn - tracks from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Banda Unaio Black, Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble,  Nickodemus,  Menahan Street Band, The Pimps of Joytime, Subatomic Sound System, Chimp Beams, Midnight Lab Band, Captain Planet, and more!

Lastly, as a special bonus for our e-mail list members - use code "SAMADHI" when checking out of our store and recieve an additional 10% off of ANYTHING in the shop!

Captain Planet finally returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz Recordings for his long awaited follow-up to 2005's massive "Gumbo Funk EP". Picking up right where he left off, the Captain delivers more of the same Globally fed beats & breaks, extra heavy on the roughness that you've come to expect.

This is a killer 6 tracker aimed straight for DJs and dancefloors- heavy Salsa-meets-chunky hip-hop breaks, nasty MPC-flavored funk, serious chopped up brazillian exotica,  dance-floor destroying African club cuts and feel good instrumental downbeat anthems all enclosed! As an additional bonus, our friends from Athens, Palov and Mishkin, give a loopy voodoo breaks treatment to "Speakin' Nuyorican" to round out the EP nicely.
Complete with a beautiful 4 color cover designed by Ixley.

Yet another sureshot from Bastard Jazz.

This Friday, July 3rd - we returns to Trophy Bar for another night of madness

The Wheel Up! party has become known for it's carefully selected mixture of the brand new and the timeless...the digital and dusty. Headed up by Bastard Jazz Recording's head honcho DJ DRM and Giant Step's promo guru DJ Erik The Red, the two have created one of those special kind of intimate, attitude free parties that stays all the way live - all night. Tropical sounds, Disco Classics, Golden Age Hip-Hop, African multirhythms, Deep Dub Vibrations, Dancefloor Downtempo, and so much more gets thrown into the mix in the no frills confines of the Trophy Bar.

Joining us on the decks will be our man DJ Shepdog from London. Shep runs the Nice Up! record label, whose ubiquitous white label 7"s have sold thousands worldwide and alongside compatriot JStar single handedly started the reggae/hip-hop mashup style that's swept the UK and spawned gaggles of imitators. Shep also runs the notorious long-running club night of the same name at Central London's Big Chill House. He's a true party rocker, and it's a treat to have him with us at Trophy Bar.

Greetings!

Bastard Jazz returns once again with another offering to please the wax gods.

This time it comes from Brighton's The Magic Fly featuring UK soundsystem veteran Ricky Ranking (recently known for appearances on The Bug's "London "Zoo" and Roots Manuva's "Awfully Deep") on microphone duties.

"Two Planets" is a big summertime crate mainstay, nudging itself right into disco dub territory with Mr. Ranking's chat's riding right in the pocket. To the B Side, Bristol's Mr. Benn (Leisure Recordings) flips the flavour of the original version into a dancehall stormer, throwing some nasty 90's drum'n'bass wobble stylings into the mix, with just a touch of Baltimore club for added heat.

Also included is the original instrumental for your mashing pleasure!

Airplay on Solid Steel (Ninja Tune) + BBC Radio (Don Letts)
On rotation with DJs like Kraak En Smaak, Drop The Lime, 7 Samurai, DJ Vadim, Simbad, J-Boogie, In Flagranti, and more....

Review + Reaction:

"Rob Watson aka Magic Fly returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label for a funky fusion of disco and reggae styles. The original mix of "2 Planets(1)" combines a snappy disco beat with skankin' reggae guitars and Ricky Ranking adding that ragga MC touch to please the crowd. Definitely one that'll get the place moving for sure (I can imagine Sabo killin' it with this). Mr. Benn gives it the Bumbaclog remix(2) on the flip that sways the disco vibes for more of a tough dancehall riddim with big bass wobbles underneath. Also includes the especially tasty instrumental for the OG." - Turntablelab

"You can always rely on Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz imprint to turn out strange nuggets like this. The original mix of 'Two Planets' is what we'd describe as an up-rocking-ragga-disco oddity but please feel free to ascribe your tag to this dancefloor weirding production. Faring much better is Mr. Benn's Bumbaclog remix on the flip, taking Ricky Ranking's ace vocal and retuning it to a smart ragga house riddim. Very odd, very cool."
-Boomkat
"Shakin to the sound of 2 planets...wicked dizko ragga style!!! I like!!" - Tom Wieland aka 7 Samurai

"Biiiiig Ricky Ranking ragga bash crazy jams!! Cheers. I will def play these!" - Drop the Lime

"Nice package, the Mr Benn remix of Two Planets wins out." - A La Fu (Big Dada)

"That Mr Benn mix is pure fire!!! Gonna be using that a lot!" - Shepdog (Nice Up! Records)

"Very nice release. The original is a great mix of fresh dancefloor sounds and the Mr Benn remix is killing it!" - Dusty (Jazz & Milk)

"Great release, the original mix is top notch!" - Slim (GoodGroove Records)

Hey Everyone-

Hope everyone is doing beautifully on this beautiful spring week.
Just a quick update on things going on here at the label...we've got a brand new digital EP just released from longtime Bastard Jazz artist Saru, a new 12" out now on our bootleg sublabel BSTRD Boots, new radio show up, and DJ DRM and KidGusto cross the puddle this week+next for a bunch of European dates -- all info below, thank you for reading:)

New Bastard Jazz Digital Release!
Saru - "The Trap" EP
BJD-002

Long time Bastard Jazz artist Saru returns to the label to deliver a 4 tracker of music strictly for the headphone set.

Moving into a deep progression of the original deep and darker downtempo sound that garnered Saru such critical praise and attention for his album Downtempo Dojo (Shadow Records, 2001) and his subsequent releases on the "Out Of The Shadows EP" and on "The Dubbled Up EP", both on Bastard Jazz under the moniker of "Spooky Monkey""The Trap" kicks things off with a hypnotic stand-up bassline, a trickling of piano, and a tough-as-nails midtempo drum break. While "Distant Recollection" retains an instrumental hip-hop vibe and couples it with well formed soundscapes and a deep dubby bassline, managing to stay hard-bitten and pastoral simultaneously. "Velvet Hammer" takes a bit of a Baleric swing to the Asia with synth washes and bleeps, subdued drums, and delayed out percussion.

Finally, the Chicago based duo of Peabody and Sherman work their magic and flip "The Trap" into an esoteric, near ambient futuristic workout in transit!

BSTRD Boots news:

On the BSTRD Boots tip, we have a brand new release on a serious party tip from LA's Trick Turner”, the man behind the great “Tricks Of The Trade” record series on his own Juxtaphone imprint.

On the A - “Sirens Comin” pairs up Dizzee Rascal’s “Sirens” acapella over a chopped and skewed version of the Bar-Kay’s “Holy Ghost," while “Let Me Run My Bass” is a straight dancehall re-working of the always-classic DJ Kool “Let Me Clear My Throat” joint with a nasty stand-up bass that mimics the horns of the 45 King joint.

To the flip, “Disrespect Dem” mines Chaka Khan and Mary J. Blige’s “Disrespectful” with live bass/guitar and lots of additional dancefloor friendly production from Turner. Things end on a downtempo note with an edit of De La Soul’s instrumental “I Be Blowin," with live drums, guitar and bass layered in for a little headrock.
