...Mars on Earth, that is -- MarsOnEarth.org !! (see July Archives too)

Most Julys I travel way up above the Arctic circle with the Haughton-Mars Project (HMP), where people from NASA, other agencies, research centers and universities go to learn how humans will do science and survive on the Moon and Mars over long durations.

The camp is set up on Devon Island, the largest uninhabited island in the world. It's a freezing cold desert like Mars, and has a 39 million year old impact crater that is very similar to the one on the Moon that we may explore someday. It's very surreal and I'm just amazed at the amount of important research that goes on up there each summer.

I'm the Education and Public Outreach Officer for the Mars Institute, the organization that runs the HMP, and my job is to report on the scientists' research with photos, videos and updates.

This is what I posted while I was there! MarsOnEarth.org (July archives)

You can watch me being a dork in the two drill videos and the spit video. :)

And we're on NASA's Analog site too!

If you're excited about humans going back to the Moon to set up permanent research bases or human missions to Mars, then you should really check out the research going on up there each summer. There are a zillion things that we need to figure out before we can do any of that successfully.

To Mars!

We have a new and improved classroom! Take a look, then get registered for this Fall!!

These are 3 credit courses at $65(?) per credit, plus $100 lab fee (you can come in throughout the week to work on your music!), so the class is around $295. I promise you will really enjoy these classes!

Current mood:  adventurous
Greetings people of Earth,

There is a reason for a slight hiatus of ZIA this summer. Elaine had a 10 day gig in Vegas at the Bellagio, playing futuristic instruments with two others (photos coming soon!), and now she is in the Canadian High Arctic (75 degrees N) with some Martians until Aug 18 or so. She's been up there since July 13. brrr!

Follow along with her personal blogs for the Space Frontier Foundation and daily status reports for the Mars Institute!

She will be back just in time to start teaching Electronic Music at SCC.

By the way, if you are in the area and have $295 kicking around, register for her class!

over and out.

Greetings future Martians,

There is no doubt, I owe you a ZIA update!

Never fear, ZIA still lives.. In fact, I will go so far as saying that ZIA will always exist. We've been around since 1992 so we have a pretty good track record of existing.. :) Here's the latest news..

We're actively working on new music for the upcoming album "Drum'n'Space". Gary Vitagliano, who played a lot of the drums for the Big Bang album, is in Ireland gearing up to get into the studio and lay down some crazy D&B drums.

This is going to be very different from any other ZIA album! Why? ..because I decided to attempt to write music that is more like what I LISTEN to (IDM and D&B) instead of just relying on what naturally comes out when I'm in a headphone trance (listen to previous 4 CDs to see what I'm talkin 'bout if you haven't already). This is an academic experiment, but I'm feelin it. I'm pretty sure you'll dig this one.

I've also had the grueling decision of deciding what city I am living in before going forward with a new lineup! That was kind of an important decision. duh. I've decided to stay in the Phoenix area and NOT move to Vegas yet (because I love my teaching job so much). And the good news is that one or two former ZIA members will be in the lineup again, as well as some other incredible talent!

The other ensuing craziness is a bigger and more involved live show. The Number Sine gear and ZIA gear have mated into a giant monstrosity of futuristic gismos. We will be traveling through the cosmos during the show, having adventures light years away, yet, before your very eyes. Yes it's true.

Stay tuned! Stay happy..
