The Horseshoe - February 2
I saw Fox Jaws, The I Spies and Modern Boys, Modern Girls perform.
Fox Jaws started off the evening and kept me in attendance the rest of it hoping i'd see something as fantastic. The band started and sounded good, ok, really good. There was this girl on stage that seemed to sing back up harmonies and shake a tambourine. Her head was draped in a scarf, she wore no shoes and wore big gold hoop earings. When she took over and I realized she was the lead with her throaty vocal reminiscent of Stevie Nicks in her prime and with a rockin back up band we didn't need much else. The crowd clapped and cheered for more. This is a band that night not hit the big time and it's one that would be an awful shame - they're a band that creates history while they play. I felt like I would be telling my kids about them one day. I only hope my kids will know who they are so we can relate. I hope they get the attention they deserve - support this band!

The I spies and Modern Boys, Modern Girls were good too. They had the sound that a lot of people would like and enjoy. I feel bad I can't really comment more than that - Fox Jaws just blazed a trail and left smouldering coals behind them making it hard for any band to follow.

Cheers,
Tyler

Calling all bands! Calling all fans!

www.zygiella.com has just launched an RSS feed for the gig calendar.

RSS is a live bookmark that is automatically updated for you whenever something new becomes available .

For bands - if you post a gig and your fan has the zygiella.com rss feed they will know the minute that you're playing and will attend your rocking good time.

For fans - if you subscribe to the RSS feed you'll get up-to-the-minute concert news and know when your favourite bands are playing.

If you browse with Mozilla, you can get the addon (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2325) that scrolls your RSS feed across the bottom of your browser while you surf.

One more way to promote your gigs online . Check it out!
www.zygiella.com and register your band! If you have already, please spread the good word .

Cheers,

Ok so I'm pretty sick right now. I was off work Monday - Wednesday and was back at it on Thursday and here again on Friday. Amos the transparent drove through fresh falling snow from Ottawa to play their show at Rancho Relaxo last night. I figured the least I could do was head north 5 blocks to see them, I'm glad (really glad) I did.

I missed some stellar bands simply because I was fighting myself to not go, lying at home on the couch wallowing in my cold. I heard that the No Shame at Tiger bar was canceled due to reasons beyond their control. Gentleman Reg needed a place to play and Dan's TWM 7 night graciously gave him some time. So, the bill in the end read like a best of 2007 for the city - The Craft Economy, Gentleman Reg, Oh No Forest Fires and Amos the transparent.

I lifted myself off the couch and arrived in time (with my food donation for Daily Bread Food Bank) to watch the last half of Oh No Forest fires. I walked in to a rockin' show with Rajiv Thavanathan bouncin 'round the stage. It's hard to walk in halfway through. I was still impressed enough though found it harder to get into the music so late.

Amos the transparent stepped on stage and knocked off toques around the club. They have this laid back folk vibe that launches into great rock'n'roll out of nowhere full of rich melodies. Lead Singer Johnathan Chandler had taken a collection of late adolescent diaries and turned them into songs he could sing, harmonize with the rest of the band and even scream to when called upon. The band looked like they were having fun and made sure to tell us how much of it they were having, "I feel like I'm playing the coolest club ever right now" Chandler says under the red lights. They loved the crowd and we loved right back. The main vocal mic fell at least 3 times but the crowd picked it up and put it back in the clip in a show of support. The Bass player provided the physical excitement running up behind the lead to support the vocal and received adorations like, "you remind us of a bear!" from the crowd. The rhythm guitar told the worst joke in history in the middle of a song, the band looked back disappointed, smiled, and launched right back into it showcasing how tight they were. They finished just as strong as they had started throwing down their instruments and running for a refill on their beers, good on ya boys!

Amos the transparent play again in Wakefield at the Black Sheep in and I'll certainly make the trek for a stellar band in a wicked venue. Besides, they did the drive - why can't I?

Current mood:hungOVAh and tired
I went to Dan's Two Way Monologues 6.5 last night fundraising for United Way.

The opening set with Kansas City Shuffle was good. It's not my kind of music, the Jimmy Eat World power punk pop sound, but they were tight and delivered a good set.

Key Witness followed with some opening songs that revitalized the crowd and got them up off their feet. It was a perfect atmosphere. The red lights along the wall the only illumination the venue had, the voices of a large crowd, the smell of booze and good times in the air...and some good ol' rock and roll. Key Witness came on strong with throaty vocals and got people dancing. I stood from my chair and stared at the stellar performance for their whole set.

The crowd started to leave a little, not recognizing the Golden Hands before God name until Dan gave his OK and convinced people to stay for his 6.5 night. I'm glad I did - Golden Hands before God stepped up to the stage and opened with their track "communist party" which filled the once empty dance floor back up again, the people paid attention. The bluesy retro rock'n'roll sound had my foot stomp and knee slap going to the strong beat. The 6 piece band made for an intimate stage presence but each managed to still showcase their talents and that tambourine/shaker/harmonica player justifies why those instruments exist. He made them accentuate the music through the whole set like nothing I had seen before.

TWM is picking up speed and fast - get on board, go to these shows before it becomes famous and you can tell your kids how you saw the band before they were big, it'll make you feel good.
