Ok, ok. Enough with the bitchin'. I know there has been a week lay-over in shows. My wife was sick. I had to play Nurse Matt for a few days. The best thing about having some time though was being able to wade through all this new music. What happens when that happens? Well, the shows become firing grounds for new music. Just in time for those end of the year lists. Tonight we are all new. No repeated tracks, and a ton of never played before on the show artists. You will definitely want to listen these next few weeks.

This week we're playing new tracks from jazz-rock by way of Zappa, Barnacled in addition to the newly expanded octet Peggy Lee. Soundtrack hit from the Lips, as well as the newest in Barry Schrader's discography. I'm really pleased also to play a track from Fun Machine, which has become heavy rotation around the Ghost house.

Tonight its supposed to snow. Amazingly, I feel like its time for this to happen. Its just in the air. If you've been listening the past few weeks you know the drill--new music. One of the hardest things to do if you are a music fan (snob) is to make a year-end list. Its an agonizing time of scratches and do overs until the dawn of Jan. 1st is upon you. Another problem is the inevitable "I didn't hear that" syndrome. We here at GDW hopefully have that covered with as much new music as you can handle being pumped into your heads. Listen up.

Release Focus

Our love affair with Thor's Rubber Hammer Productions is fairly well documented on this blog. They just put out great, aurally-challenging pieces that equally delight and confuse upon listening. This year has brought some changes to the label--new release formats (less cd-r, more vinyl), and full lengths from bands previously only heard on comps.

One such band is Chartreuse. Coming from the mind of Drew Smith, Chartreuse is the type of band that you wish could be playing as a soundtrack to your life. Oh, wouldn't it be keen to be walking down the street and see the birds flying overhead to music like this? Its probably one of, if not the most heart achingly beautiful releases of the year.

What Smith aspires to on this record and accomplishes is a myriad of heavenly guitar ambience cutting through an organic sound of pure blissful exploration. Each melody builds upon the previous, looping and swirling around like cloudy puffs of smoke.

At just under an hour, Drew Smith delivers such an impact-filled album, its odd to write that this is his debut record.

Release Focus

+ = INCREDIBLE

It was awhile back when I read about Dais. Usually when a label specializes in vinyl and I contact them about some airplay copies I get a *hrmph* and that's that. Maybe an mp3 or something. I can't say I blame the labels with the cost and all. However, Dais didn't give me the standard response and instead sent me two gorgeous pieces to add to the rotation.

Tonight, I'm playing 2 tracks from Whip and the Body, who have just birthed an amazing 7" record for Dais. Limited to 300 copies, the impressive release is sure to be sold out by new year.

What do I know about this record? Next to nothing...and perhaps that part of the appeal. Power electronics that scrape the streets of all that is unholy and unabashedly dingy. Coming at you from all directions and screaming (sometimes literally) for your undivided attention. Hailing from Brooklyn, the noise contained herein, makes you play the record over and over. Hopefully a full-length is coming soon.

Next week we'll be playing a few tracks from another Dais Records release--Cult of Youth

Greetings and salutations.

Here we are, closing in rapidly on the end of the year, fall already in our midst. As I've been saying the past few weeks, its the end of the year push with new music. Amazing things are hitting my mailbox every week, and I would be amiss not to share them with you. In fact, I think it makes me quite the gracious host. We're just glad to be on the radio still.

Unfortunately, last week some maintenance was being done to the live audio stream from WSHC's studio 1. To be honest, it could still be down as I haven't been to the station since last week. Hopefully not, but there is a chance. However, I've uploaded last week's show so you can listen to all the great music you might have potentially missed.

GDW show no. 55

Do it up download style, or stream it to your heart's desire.

Artist Focus

Hermit Thrushes

Ok, ok settle down. Yes, they now there is a band called Thrush Hermit, and no they don't care. These Philly musicians are out to make a name for themselves, and they don't need your preconceived notions of a pop-rock band mussing up their style.

So their new full-length "Benaki" is in my hand, and I'm trying to think of some witty comments to make about the band and how they move my soul, etc. I guess the least I can say about the band is that they take a seemingly simple concept of pop or indie rock and twist it this way and that to create their own indelible sound. Sure you can draw comparisons to bands like Apples in Stereo and Animal Collective, but they would be merely roadside landmarks to keep you on the right path.

What the 5-piece has done is create a fun record that is fun enough to keep your toes tapping, but deep and engaging enough to keep those said toes on alert.

Tonight we'll be playing several tracks off "Benaki" where you can get exposed to them before the world gets to know of them...Philly Cheesesteaks, beards and all.
