Vincent Vincent and the Villains

**** Luminaire, London

The Guardian

With sweat dripping on to the satin lapel of his teddy boy jacket, Vincent Vincent nods in the direction of drummer Alex Cox, whose right arm rests in a sling decorated with crotchets and treble clefts. "Our record company broke his arm because our album didn’t make the Top 40," Vincent says with a smile. "If it doesn’t make it this week, they’ll break the other one."

For the past five years, Vincent Vincent and the Villains have been trying to convince kids weaned on indie and enthralled by electro that rockabilly is where it’s really at. And the clamour from the teen crowd is proof that the band are more than mere rock revivalists.

The jaunty On My Own shares DNA with the Libertines, and gets everybody singing and dancing wildly. Or almost everybody. "I think there should be a special round of applause for these two," Vincent says, pointing to a couple close to the stage, "for continuing their snog while plummeting towards the monitors."

It is easy to love such infectious, happy-go-lucky songs as Blue Boy, though the drama and darkness that stalk Cinema and the driving, sinister Telephone go over the heads of a crowd intent on invading the stage and showing off their dancing skills.

When a minor scuffle breaks out, Vincent is clearly concerned, but more telling is his consternation when a song suggestion is met by blank stares. "No one wants to hear Seven Inch Record?" he says, unaware that the kids have no idea what he is talking about.

· At the 100 Club, London (020-7636 0933), on May 13. Then touring.

This week finally sees the release of ’Gospel Bombs’ on CD and Download. If you haven’t heard it already, check out this listening post, then head over here, and pick yourself up a copy!

If you’re quick, Recordstore may still have a few signed CDs available, click here to check!

7Digital are currently retailing the download for a bargain £5, while the iTunes version of the album includes 2 bonus tracks, ’Bad Boy’ and ’Pretty Girl’ (Acoustic Version).

The Guardian : ’The Villains hop from Mexican samba to Bad Seeds rumbustiousness, while their leader cultivates the role of a rock’n’roll outsider. His themes - isolation, madness, romantic debacle and salvation through "a stack of 45s" - are retro but timeless, and the songs follow suit. Zippy tunes such as On My Own, Pretty Girl and the twanging, emotion-wracked, End of the Night should have many a dancefloor partying like it’s 1959.’

Artrocker : ’This is classic British rock’n’roll for a new wave indie generation.’
The Fly : ’Well worth the wait... lovingly produced, with not a weak track on it... simply brilliant.’

The Independent : ’If this is London’s take on the next big thing, count me in.’

Metro : ’A surprisingly uplifting affair. Subtle, modern-day twists keep things fresh... it’s charming stuff and as timeless as it is intended to be.’

Clash : ’This is vibrant rock ’n’ roll that bests many a debut and will keep fingers clicking long into the summer.’

We’d like to say thanks to all the good people who’ve already been out to buy GOSPEL BOMBS this week. Thank you very much. We know it’s been a long time coming - but we hope that when you listen to it, you think that it’s been well worth the wait. We like hearing what you think about it too... especially nice things.

We’re really sorry if you’re still waiting for your copy of the special limited edition gatefold heavyweight vinyl 12" LP. News from EMI, is that it’ll be another 10 days or so until it’s ready and in the racks. We’re only pressing 500 copies, and they could have been on the shelves on March 10th... but we had some samples back from the manufacturers a week ago... and... for some reason, they’d been printed on the wrong kind of paper. We’re very particular about these things. They didn’t look as nice as we wanted them to look... so, we had them all sent back to be reprinted on the good stuff. Since we’ve waited a few years to make this record - a couple of weeks shouldn’t matter too much...

Meanwhile, you can pick up a copy of the cd in all good record stores, or one of the few remaining super limited signed copies from www.recordstore.co.uk. There is also a special version of the album available to download on iTunes, which includes two extra tracks... The Villains’ killer cover of The Jivebombers ’Bad Boy’ and a special acoustic version of ’Pretty Girl’.

The Villains will be celebrating the release of GOSPEL BOMBS on friday 14th March at Madame JoJos in Soho. White Heat will be sure to leave a few tickets on the door, but we recommend getting there as early as possible. Doors at 7pm. We’d love to see as many of you there as possible. It’s been a while since they played White Heat, and they’re looking forward to it. Plus, it’ll be the first time Vincent and Charlie have performed together as The Heartbreak Snakes for three years.

... Vincent, Alex, Tom and Will have been rehearsing hard this week to make sure everything sounds as good as it could on friday. Alex has himself a boxer’s fracture in his right hand, and is having to learn to play the whole set one-handed - doctors orders... even the Pretty Girl drum solo. Here’s a photo of the Villains from earlier today before rehearsal, taken by the fine people from FAULT MAGAZINE...
