when we had finished "endsongs", and done a bunch of touring for it in our first van, we were at a loss. how could nothing have happened yet?? shannon and i hatched a plan to make an ep, which was novel for us then. we pulled together some odd stuff we had done with gordon raphael, and finished everything with pete min. in the end, the 5 song ep we came up with helped us get our RCA deal. all of the songs from it were rerecorded, except this one. this is our first drummer, jeremy, at his finest.

a song of shannon's that i have always loved. monster drumming here. dave fridmann produced this track and i can remember him telling our then drummer, mike, to play CRAZIER. at one point it goes out of time at the end, mike is just going off. i also remember trying to bang the song into a verse/chorus/verse kind of song, and i was overruled. which turned out to be the right thing after all.

this is from a radio session, early in the morning. our bass player dave just nailed his singing parts and i remember being very impressed. i always liked playing this song acoustically; it worked in a way i didn't expect.Steve

in the UK they are big on exclusive, indie kind of packages. our label in 2003 decided to have a few people remix "day sleeper". this is the only one that i ever thought was worth a damn. crazy piano, it sounds like whoever did this was whacked out of his head on the tornado scene from "the wizard of oz".

this is a new song that very nearly made it onto "secrets are sinister". peter katis fought hard for it...and in the end we did finish it and used a scratch vocal take i had done. great exuberant drumming by jason here. this is the drummers' week in these songs. mostly recorded in our practice space in greenpoint, brooklyn.

hello,
for those of you in new york, we are playing a show at the bowery ballroom on november 14th. this will be our last NYC show for a while, and the last show for the "secrets are sinister" record. in addition, this fall also marks the 10th anniversary of the band. so in honor of that milestone we are going to play some older songs, songs we haven't tried in a while. b sides, endsongs tracks, etc. i am going to post one or two that we want to play up on our myspace player today, and if there is anything we should play, you can tell us here (longwavetheband@gmail.com).
for those of you not necessarily in new york, there is a hurricane bells track, "monsters", on the new twilight soundtrack, released today.
hurricane bells is a "band" made up of only myself, recorded in between longwave tours. myspace.com/hurricanebells <http://myspace.com/hurricanebells> . i hope you like it.
