Renowned South African/Zimbabwean guitarist Tony Cox begins his first Canadian tour with several performances in Toronto. On his first visit to Canada last year, Cox presented a showcase at a music conference in New Brunswick where a short performance so astounded and astonished attendees that he has been invited back to tour, with 23 dates booked beginning in Nova Scotia in November. Toronto music fans will be able to enjoy his remarkable talents as he passes through.

Born in Zimbabwe and now residing in Johannesburg South Africa, Tony Cox is a multiple award-winning acoustic guitarist and he has become a veritable icon of the instrument in his own country. His compositions are charged it with the African imagery that is very much a part of this unique guitar player's world perspective. Besides being a powerful solo performer Cox has collaborated and recorded with many other musicians to produce two SAMA (South African Music Award) award-winning albums and a string of nominations.
'China' (SA slang for friend) is just such an album. He recorded it in 2002 featuring many of the cream of SA musicians and is a great example of Cox's ability to work beyond the confines of solo guitar playing. The album won the 'best instrumental' category at the 2003 SAMA awards.

the Toronto itinenary:
the Melody Bar at the Gladstone Hotel on Friday October 26th from 7pm to 9pm. Free
the Free Times Cafe on Sunday October 28 at 7:30pm. PWYC
with Jabulani at the NOW Lounge on Thursday November 1st at 9pm. $10
Also, listen to CIUT's Take 5 on Friday October 26th, when Tony Cox is the musical guest, beginning at 8:30am.

JABULANI is a Toronto based South African group that plays the Zulu-style music from the streets of Johannesburg and the migrant workers living in its hostels, led by Johannesburg born Brian Litvin. Supporting Litvin's traditional thumb and fore-finger melodic guitar playing are the well travelled Lemphane Mafata, on bass guitar and vocals, and George Morellato on percussion and vocals. The trio delivers the true spirit of this South African sound in both English and Zulu. Jabulani, a Zulu word which means "we are happy", strives in performance to add this definition - "the name of the band whose music makes one feel happy."

Music Africa presents Afrofest, Toronto's festival of Canadian and international African music since 1989, and other events to promote African culture throughout the year. Music Africa acknowledges the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council.

Music Africa presents Toronto's 19th annual Afrofest, a celebration of African music and culture, free on Saturday July 7 and Sunday July 8 at Queen's Park from noon to 10:30pm. Afrofest is a multi-disciplinary event with concerts, dance, theatre, food, a marketplace, and activities for youth and kids, but it's the music that is the heart of the festival. Traditional and contemporary styles of music by top international touring acts and dozens of African performing groups from across Canada will be seen and heard. The festival has grown every year, and in 2007, 3 different outdoor stages will come to life with music and dance. Come to Queen's Park and discover Africa in the heart of Toronto!

Music Africa and Harbourfront Centre will present two concerts leading up to the big Afrofest weekend at Queen's Park. An Afrofest pre-launch on Friday June 29th will feature the new Afrobeat superstar Seun Kuti, playing with his father Fela's famous Egypt 80 Band. Opening is Eritrean krar virtuoso Daniel Nebiat. The Official Launch of Afrofest is the Afrofest Launch Party on Thursday July 5th with a concert by Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra. Katenen Dioubaté opens. Both concerts take place at Harbourfront Centre. Tickets are available at www.harbourfrontcentre.com or 416-973-4000.

This year's Queen's Park main stage concerts include veteran Congolese/Kenyan superstar Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga, South Africa's legendary and sensational Mahotella Queens (their Park!), Nawal "The Voice of the Comoros", from Madagascar HAJAmadagascar & The Groovy People, Nya Soleil from Cameroon, Sudan's Ruth Mathiang, Source with Abdoulaye Diabate from Mali, Guinea's Katenen Dioubaté, Senegalese Zale Seck, DR Congo's Pekocé, Maroc'N Real with Hassan el Hadi from Morocco, Habeeba Hobeika Egyptian Dance Ensemble, and the very popular local Samba Squad. Links to artists' web sites are below.

A specially-commissioned presentation by the African Dance Ensemble will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Ghana's Independence at the 2007 festival. Modesto Amegago will lead opening and closing ceremonies in the Ghanaian tradition.

Afrofest at Queen's Park is a showcase of the richness and diversity of African culture. Enjoy free music workshops at the Baobab Tree Stage along with African Theatre and the Youth Zone, which has an expanded program oriented to youth. For the younger ones there is a Children's Village area, with activities designed to teach and inform about African culture through art and crafts, drumming, and storytelling. The popular Babatunde Olatunji drum stage will again host many different drumming ensembles and teachers including performance, drum circles and instruction. There is also a dazzling display of authentic African arts, crafts and delicious foods in the bustling African marketplace. Afrofest is the African culture event of the summer!

Afrofest 2007 will be broadcast live from Queen's Park on CIUT 89.5 FM (Saturday 3pm till midnight, Sunday 1pm till midnight), and CBC Radio will be on site on Saturday recording for future broadcast.

Music Africa gives thanks almighty to Mighty Popo and his band, and to all who joined us on June 7, 2007 at the Lula Lounge. Mighty Popo's new CD Muhazi is available in Toronto at African Drums & Art Crafts, 618 Dundas St. West. (416) 597-0175, and Soundscapes, 572 College St. (416) 537-1620.

Mighty Popo
The spotlight on violence, chaos and genocide in the news from Rwanda and Burundi could obscure in a darkness of despair all the music, dance, laughter, civility and joie de vivre of those countries. Mighty Popo, a Rwandan born in a Burundian refugee community, is evidence to the contrary, as a person of enormous charm, wit, resilience and, yes, joie de vivre.
Similarly, reducing Popo to a Rwandan-Burundian refugee and survivor whose music is steeped in African tradition misses the whole story of a rising star in Canada, which includes his effortless musicality as a member of the 2004 Juno Award winning African Guitar Summit, his highlight performance at the Canadian edition of Bob Geldof's international Live 8 concerts (one of the few chosen for EMI's Live 8 DVD), his brilliant return to New Orleans for CBC Radio's Maple Leaf Mojo Meets New Orleans Gumbo benefit concert (broadcast live cross-country), or the kudos received for his genre-busting solo work,
As much as Popo has inherited a love of the traditional music of Rwanda and Burundi, he also has a lifelong connection with rock and roll, blues, jazz, R&B, reggae and folk traditions. His music reflects his immersion in a world culture navigated with grace, sensitivity and an enormous sense of exploration and fun. It is music enriched by many traditions, authentically his, and validated by its own excellence.

MUHAZI promo video

Muhazi is the name of a lake in eastern Rwanda. It is a magical place, and the making of this CD was full of magical moments and coincidences: my experiences studying music in Rwanda with the Batwa and with master guitarist Ibrahim, the unexpected arrival of friends like Tanga and Vitas from various corners of the world to record with me, my good fortune in getting exactly the great guest artists I wanted into some wonderful (and unlikely) studios (how many Guinean balafon players lay down tracks after midnight in Whitehorse?) ... I feel a deep emotional connection to these songs and a 'rightness' about how they came to be that goes beyond anything I've felt before. Enjoy!
