Next week Dystopia will hit the studio to record a pre-production from their new studio album Ego, coming up later this year. We will be recording with Pia in Amsterdam.

The promo will have a total playing time of approximately 12 minutes. It will be for promotional use only, and for this reason free downloadable via our myspace and homepage.

I'll break it to you right away: the only negative thing about this demo is the fact that it's múch too short! This disc grabbed me on the very first listen.

Dystopia was founded at the end of 2004 in 'Noord-Holland', but under the name 'Imperial Dystopia'. A year later the band started to gig and even the infamous 'Waerdse Tempel' was visited. In 2006 the first demo 'The Last Assault' was recorded, but unfortunately never released.

The band shortened it's name to 'Dystopia' and plans were made for a more professional demo. Also, a second guitar player was added to the lineup. This demo, "This Means War", got lots of positive feedback. Plans are being made to record a full-length.

The demo consists of three tracks and is, like previously stated, way too short (over 15 minutes). The sound quality is reasonable, the production could be a bit more "fatter".

The band describes itself as a four headed bulldozer, crushing anything on it's path. At the first listen I was indeed crushed, positively speaking.

The music is a mixture of death- and thrashmetal with the third track even featuring some bits of blackmetal. This third song, 'Devastator', is imo the best track. The band does clearly have it's own sound and the music is difficult to categorize.

For the average metalfan this band is definitely worth wile. BRING ON THE FULL LENGTH!!!

I already knew Dystopia from Schagen (NL) because of their participation in the pre-round of the Metal Battle in Northern Holland. Their demo was already in my possession. And now I am hoping that it will become a collectors item, so I can put two of them on e-bay. The demo 'This Means War' has the same title as an LP from Tank from the middle eighties, when the members of Dystopia hadn't even been conceived yet, but that might be a coincidence.

Dystopia plays a mix of death and black metal. In the three songs this mix is varied in favour of black metal. The opening track 'Chaos Incarnate' is mainly a death metal song, but a very messy one indeed. There are a few moments where the tightness fades in the bass guitar and one of the guitarists. A second thing that comes to mind is that one of the guitars isn't as loud in the mix as the other. During the following track 'Imperator' the black metal influences rear their ugly head. As for the performance this song is way better than 'Chaos Incarnate'. The real big one is the last track 'Devastator', that shows us in six minutes a perfect mix between Satyricon and Vader.

But I do have some points for Dystopia: next time think about the low end of the sound in the mix. Also make the bass act like a bass and not like a guitar. In some higher guitar parts the bass tends to follow, and that kicks out the base under your songs, the drums are on their own so to speak and it kills your sound. A low bass makes sure there is a bottom on which the higher guitar lines can build on. And next time stay in the rehearsal room long enough to make the songs sound flawless. Music wise it's good, on the performance end it needs some work. Especially when you're planning to record a full length it is necessary to let the songs sound tight as fuck. To make a long story short: Dystopia can get there if they work hard for it and keep up the good composing like on this demo. I will keep an eye on them.

Vrij vertaald betekent Dystopia zoiets als een denkbeeldige plaats waar alles verkeerd is, het tegenovergestelde van Utopia dus eigenlijk. Het is een betekenis die bepaald geen hout snijdt wanneer de band luisterend naar dezelfde koosnaam zich op de demo

'This Means War' te buiten gaat aan een drietal hapklare death/black metal brokken, die menig hond de stuipen op het lijf zouden jagen in het geval die per ongeluk als zijnde van het merk Bonzo geserveerd zouden worden in de etensbak.

De eind 2004 opgerichte formatie ging aanvankelijk door het leven met de voorvoeging Imperial, maar die werd tijdens de opnamen van 'The Last Assault' demo in 2006 bij het oud vuil gezet om daar in deernis te verrotten. Vreemd genoeg heeft genoemde demo volgens de bio van de band nooit het daglicht mogen aanschouwen. Dit in tegenstelling dus tot 'This Means War', een alleraardigst schijfje opgenomen in de Undertone Recordings studio in Purmerend.

Bij openingstrack 'Chaos Incarnate' is het meteen raak en wordt duidelijk waar al dan niet bedoeld de garnering voor deze woeste death metal maaltijd vandaan werd gehaald: De oude Kreator en Sepultura ten tijden van 'Beneath The Remains'. De riffs zijn ongemeen bruut en hakkend en nopen tot ongegeneerd schudden met het hoofd tot het duizelt en het naar rechts draaien van de volumeknop, opdat de buurtbewoners in hun schone onschuld vooral ook mee kunnen genieten van dit smakelijke hapje.

Op het tweede nummer 'Imperator' verdwijnen genoemde invloeden enigszins naar de achtergrond ten faveure van duistere, aan Moonspell verwante klanken. Tevens wordt zo nu en dan overgeschakeld op woeste blast beats met voortrollende dubbele bass drums, zo meedogenloos van aard dat het argeloze passanten dun door de broek loopt van angst.

Slotstuk van de demo, het pièce de résistance, is het genadeloze 'Devastator'. Dit nummer dendert als een op hol geslagen olifant door de huiskamer en blaast met furieuze kracht het pleisterwerk los van de muren. De muziek is ongemeen fel met naar black metal neigende intermezzo's en de zanger klinkt alsof hij dicht op de hielen wordt gezeten door een horde baarlijke duivels, een werkelijk hels inferno ontketend met rauwe grunts. Wie hier stil bij kan blijven zitten, is een knappe jongen of vrouw.

Maar is dan werkelijk alles goed aan deze demo? De waarheid gebiedt te zeggen van niet. De zang had best iets meer naar voren in de mix mogen staan, terwijl de productie iets vuiger had gekund teneinde een nog smeriger geluid te creëren. Niettemin niets dan lof voor deze band uit Schagen.

Dystopia uit Schagen, Nederland, brengt met This Means War hun tweede demo uit. Vier jongeheren onder leiding van Dennis the Menace. Een mooi verzorgde cd met drie eigenbereide liederen, ter waarde van een kwartier metal. Dystopia staat voor het omgekeerde van een utopia, waarmee we direct weten welke muizenissen zich in de hoofden van de heren manifesteren.

Het is moeilijk te bepalen welk genre de heren spelen. Ik zou kunnen zeggen dat het melodeaththrash is op een black metal tempo, maar zo een omschrijving is nietszeggender dan een doofstomme kluizenaar. Persoonlijk denk ik spontaan aan het nummer Through The Virgin Sky van de eerste mini van Dimension Zero, maar met een zwartmetalen jasje. De drummer is vrij stabiel strakspelend, en verdient lof. De zang en gitaarpartijen verdwijnen soms wat in de productie die net iets vetter en helderder kan, maar sinds dit een demo is, hoeven de heren er zich niet voor te schamen. De songs zijn onderhoudend en gevarieerd, met soms een veelvoud aan stijlen door elkaar. Op zich niet slecht, maar het geheel ontbreekt een tikkeltje.

This Means War is een degelijke demo en geeft een blijk van talent. Ik hoop dat Dystopia in de nabije toekomst de kans krijgt om zich te bewijzen, want het klinkt absoluut niet verkeerd. Een hoop voorprogramma's, een klein beetje meer structuur in de stijlkeuze en een betere productie, daarmee wordt het alleen maar beter. Succes ermee!

In October this year Dystopia will hit the studio once again to record their long waited full length cd! The CD will go under the name: EGO. In August/September a pre-production will be recorded, which will feature three of the songs for the upcoming album!
