SWEET CHEATER - Eatin' ain't cheatin'
(Perris records) Total Time: 41:03
According to their CD, SWEET CHEATER comes from the glorious 80's days when to be a rocker or a transvestite in LA was quite close at LA. Yet time took its toll and the band reformed to bring us their latest effort that will bring tears to the eyes of the older amongst us who remember the days that sleaze rock started growing in Europe, the distant sound of the LA sleaze, glam scene. Their CD talks about DEF LEPPARD, KIX, TESLA, influences and while I find the KIX and TESLA influences an honor, why and where do you listen to the Leps influence. These guys are a pretty tight unit that delivers street wise, melodic sleaze rock. They sure have vocal harmonies and melodies and sleaze guitars, but due to their excellent vocalist, Mike Chappel, they could compared with KIX mostly and more with TUFF, SLAUGHTER, BEAU NASTY and RATT and why not early SKID ROW. Still the band has its own sound, really impressive songs like the "One love" and the slow power ballad of "Its our love" and skull crushers like the opener "All fired up" and "Subway train", "Money's tough". Songs heavy, melodic with anthemic choruses, mad guitar work, songs deserved to played at maximum volume, at every rock club, around the nation. It is good that a band from the vaults of the LA scene resurrects to bring the real sound of the greatest period in US Hard rock, with such convincing sound. On the contrary with other of the company releases, this album, deservers to be hard as it comes from people who were there from the start. In almost 40 minutes they include all the things that made the Sleaze style so much loved, screaming guitars, melodic vocals, street feeling and big based, heart pounding drums. Listen to songs like "Dancing On My Grave" and party till you drop. Along CRASHDIET, CRYSTAL PISTOL, BABYLON BOMBS the new sleaze / glam generation is back with a vengeance, and these guys knows how to rock and how to party. Get your self outta the couch and to the local record shop, buy it, order it, but for Christ sake don't download it, support the scene, or rotten to the techno/dance hell.

SMASH ALLEY - Too Late to Say No

This is some of the best 80 s Sleazy Hair Metal you will hear. Smash Alley sounds a lot like a mixture of KIX, RATT, LA GUNS, BLIND DATE, and SWEET CHEATER. Smash Alley hails from Chicago and is a must have for any fan of 80 s Hair Metal...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I actually ordered this cd on a fluke chance while buying something else... and it was a great decision! This cd took me back to the days of Skid Row, Dokken, Poison and Warrant. I have over a thousand cds and this one is my favorite! If you ever heard of the band Wildside, they sound very similar. "Summer" is an awesome song... even better than "Summertime Girls" by Y&T. "Danicin' On My Grave" also gets cranked up while driving on the highway. Every song on this cd is awesome. If you liked "metal" from the late 80's and early 90's before grunge screwed everything up, then buy this cd... and rock!

I've been buying CDs form Perris for more years than I can remember. Back when the Internet hadn't really taken off, they were placing full-page ads in Metal Edge and every couple of months I'd be ringing them and placing an order. They were one of the very few that kept the glam flag flying during the dark days of grunge by either signing bands directly or distributing their independently released CDs. I could always rely on them to provide my glam rock fix.

They've maintained this commitment to the genre by this series of "Hollywood Hairspray" CDs on which they showcase little known bands who take their inspiration from the glory days of glam rock. Whether or not I'd class all of these bands on this, Volume 5, as "glam" or "sleaze" is debateable but there's a nice spread of styles that stops this 16 track CD from getting dull.

"Dancin on My Grave" by Sweet Cheater is pure 80's rock, which is no doubt a sign of the time they spent spotlight dodging in the late 80's. Having failed to make it then, they've been on hiatus for 15 years but 5 of the original members got back together to do a reunion gig. If this track is representative of what they're doing then welcome back boys! Superb vocals, a killer chorus and verses that don't make you wish that they were shorter. Sure, it's a nostalgic little treat but when it's this good, who the hell cares.

It's always good to hear Kory Clarke's distinctive vocals and here he's put them behind the thunder of his new outfit Dirty Rig. These guys are far more sleaze than glam (though even that's pushing the term) and their track "Suck It" manages to marry his trademark snarl to a bruising, track underpinned by an insistent bass line all of which would cause a mosh pit to positively wet itself. If there's more like this on the way and if they finally get some decent promotion this lot would pick up a sizeable fan base in no time and the world would be a better place for it. They tour the UK in September and are definitely worth checking out.

At the more traditional Glam end of the scale we have Irelands very own Nice`n`Sleazy. These guys are complete unknowns, which isn't really surprising as their average age is 16.4. Yes, you read that right. They've either got very cool parents or siblings because this lot wear their influences on the sleeves with they're big lipstick, tousled hair and glittery influences. "Rock `n` Roll Addiction" is one of the finest slices of glam I've heard all year. Superb vocals, great playing, catchy choruses, and handclaps, its sheer glam rock heaven. Even the production is pretty damn fine and to all you bands that settle for a flat, muddy sound, shame on you! This shows how well it can be done. The band has got a live video on Youtube that's accessible via their band site or their myspace page and it's clear this lot know how to have fun. I want to see them live - NOW!

Although those are my personal highlights, there's not a truly duff track on here and the variety will mean that there's something for everyone and definitely worth checking out. However, I'm afraid it's back to Nice'n' Sleazy for me.

Sweet Cheater

Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'

Awww, it's so dreamy, drifting back into the good old glam days, this really is a blast from the past! If you never discovered Boston formed Sweet Cheater back in the day (and in your defence there really were plenty of similar styled bands to wade through), then maybe you missed out on one of the best.

There's still time to rediscover some of glams finer moments as the guys update and re-release some of their classic repertoire in the form of album 'Eatin Ain't Cheatin', full of powerful bubblegum spewing anthems twinged with Pretty Boy Floyd and Ratt type melodies, with the odd hint of Motley Crue, heaps of band chorus chanting that really does remind you which years your going back too.

Thus said, there is an underlying sound and technique that really only belongs to SC. All songs are well written and the band and vocals blend together perfectly. 'All Fired Up' is typically sing-along style, whilst 'One Love' is a rather well put together ballad, which changes the bands whole concept by simply adding a respectably well played piano part. Whether or not you're just curious about the whole glam era or looking to step back in time, there really couldn't be a better place to start.

SWEET CHEATER
"EATIN' AIN'T CHEATIN'"
(Perris)

Allow me a minute to take a look at my calendar… yes, it says it right here… year: 1988. Why I thought that I was living in 2006? Am I a time traveler or just these guys took us back to the past? Now I'm sure that grunge music in the 90's did so much destruction than we will ever know. Sweet Cheater was trying to find a contract in the late 80's till they split up in 1990. A few months ago the guys meet up again and decide to go on with the band now that this kind of music is on its rise. The 10 songs of this CD are coming straight from the heart of the 80s and it's like a compilation of the band's best songs from back then. The truth is that the songs are very good, the production is fine and the band seems to be more influenced from bands like Ratt, Tesla, Kix, Poison and Junkyard. Those who keep in pace with Grande-Rock know how much I like this kind of music and the aforementioned bands as well. Sweet Cheater will please all the fans of the 80's American hair metal period. "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'" is a very good choice for any hard rock fan that respects himself.

Sweet Cheater – Eatin' Ain't Cheatin'
(Perris Records – 2006)
A band from the 80's who reformed – good ole classic glammy hair rock done in the best way possible with songs that have delectable arrangements and will get them pistons-a-pumping and have you gasping for more. So get that Slippery When Wet Bon Jovi hairstyle grown back, slip on those tight black leather slacks, slap on the cowboy boots and finish it off with a classy black leather jacket.

Sweet Cheater bring all the memories back and it makes you wonder if they still look the same – let's hope they ain't got old fat bald and borin' as this band in their prime were a 'Crue/Poison/Vain/Kiss styled band with lead and backing vocals that you'll find yourself singing along to. Take the one about everyone's fave season 'Summer'; the prom time again 'All fired up' (not the Pat Benator song I assure you); the 'Calling Dr. Love' like 'Money's Tough' – well I suppose it is if it's spent on crack (as in a lyric of the song – not a direct reference to the band) or the partying 'Dancin' on my grave'; the lovin' ballad 'I Got You' (get your ciggy lighters out for that one) and the goin' down of the rockin' 'Subway Train'.

These cats have definitely got it.

SWEET CHEATER 'EATIN' AIN'T CHEATIN' (PERRIS RECORDS)

Back to the late 80s American mainstream melodic rocksound of DOKKEN, DANGER DANGER, FIREHOUSE, DIRTY BLONDE, WINGER, WARRANT, RATT, SKID ROW, SLAUGHTER, etc. It's like we're watching MTV back in 1990 again when hearing the band SWEET CHEATER, but it's really 2006 and this is a CD which has just been released on PERRIS RECORDS. The CD of the American band SWEET CHEATER contains remastered recordings of the band's material from the late 80s, so no coincidence it does sound like 15+ years ago. No problem however, because the sound is huge and songs like "Summer", "Holding out on love", "Romina" and the RATTish "Subway train" are very catchy melodic rockers. Not as good as mentioned bands, but nevertheless definitely something worth having if you're a fan of late 80s LA Melodic Hair Metal!

Sweet Cheater "Eatin' Ain't Cheatin' " Perris Records (Cat No PER1672)

Sweet Cheater are a band who have just reformed, and have recorded an album that brings back the sound and feeling of the best of the late 80's rock.

From the opening track, "All Fired Up" the songs have that Ratt/Tesla/Skid Row feel to them. "It's Our Love" is a great ballad, while "Dancin' On My Grave" and "Romina" are just straight ahead good time rock. All the songs on the album are well produced and full of great hooks and choruses. A welcome return for the band.

Why Buy? A great reminder of the best of the late 80's rock bands.

Tracks to burn? "All Fired Up", "It's Our Love", "Dancin' On My Grave" and "Romina"

Well, well, well…. The same ol' story…Yet another hopeful L.A. act without a record deal!! We've seen these bands reappear through the years of the new millennium…For example, take a band like BLIND DATE - The same story… Widespread acclaim from fans and radio stations back in the day, but their style was, arguably, too formulaic to secure any major record deal, and this is the exact same problem with SWEET CHEATER. They had the posed look, they bought the right boots, and they drank the right whiskey (Jack D. of course!) but some things just weren't meant to be…

As you might have guessed this is just another one of those wannabe-popular-on-MTV acts, but, having said that, I must admit that Perris Records have struck gold this time! This is far better than many of those so-called lost gems that find their way into many a collection nowadays. They've got a slick production, but still with those raw edges. Clear sounding instruments all the way. This fact, that the production is rather unique really took me by surprise! Pretty average material though, but still played with full conviction. Comparisons to bands like WILDSIDE, McQUEEN STREET, POISON and SLAUGHTER are hard to avoid here, but this band could arguably have competed against the best of the hair bands, had they just had their shot back then!

SWEET CHEATER didn't get far but if you dig that no-bones-about-it lifestyle and sound of L.A. then this one will surely add that extra bit of firepower to any Friday night!

THIS WEEK IN THE HEADBANGERS BASEMENT

It's part 2 of our role reversal this week with Kid Ego in the Backstage area of the Headbangers Basement and Sweet Cheater in the HBB's New Metal. With the HBB's Battle Trax, Chris Laney and Instinct Animal go for win number 4 against Roktopuss featuring Roxy Petrucci and Lorraine Lewis. A while back I came across a great AC/DC tribute called Thunderbolt and with the CobWeb Classic we'll check out the lead off track Highway To Hell by Quiet Riot and in the Live Experience in honor of Cinderella out on the road celebrating their debut disc Night Songs, I've got a live version of the title track lined up along with Dangerous Toys and Kix with a live version of a great track from Cool Kids. I've always been a huge fan of Southern Rock, so I figured what better way to kick off this weeks edition of the HBB than with a set of scorching Southern Rock including Gator Country and Alligator Stew. And if that's not enough, I'll also spin some great track from Ballbreaker, Helix and Funy Money. Wanna find out what I've missed? Tune in and check it out!
