Sembra uno (o una, tanto è uguale…) dei Magic Numbers…no no…mi dispiace.

imbattibili rimarranno i (o le?) cipster..

  4. sachiel Says:

    fantastico!

I figure I'll post these good or bad or average...

"John Pringle's first album sounds like a juiced up David Gray record. His vocal performance, although pleasing, sits easily among most adult alternative singers, about as unique as any current top-40 vocalist. His warm, full vocals fit brilliantly, however, with the delicate acoustic sways of this album. Like much of Gray's work, Pringle's songs are all acoustic-based, backed by drums, bass, keys and a few more guitars. "Low Light" and "Blindsided" are packed, heavy tracks. There are no distorted guitars but the instrumentation and thick, stacked background vocals make the songs feel full and round. The band brings to mind the expansiveness of the Dave Matthews Band, and indeed, "So Sincerely" also features light but crucial cello parts so often used in Dave Matthews Band recordings.

These songs are not wildly distinguishable. Because Pringle's fluttering acoustic guitar is the basis for every track, differentiation between songs is blurred slightly by the thick, earthy chord progressions. Most of these songs are radio-friendly, and some of them have the ability to stand on their own as unique pieces of music. "Transmission" features lofty vocal melodies that stretch Pringle's abilities, demonstrating to listeners what his strained vocals are capable of achieving. The lengthy song is marked by catchy and complex transitions that speak to the compelling listenability of Dave Mathews' "Don't Drink the Water." "Love Me" is a delicate folk song with powerfully pensive lyrics and a vocal performance with a Southern draw like that of Ryan Adams. "Busted in Stockholm" shares equally honest lyrics matched with airy, swaying verses and choruses.

Although songs are thematically very similar, this album shows an impressive feel for nuance and suggests promising possibilities for future songcrafting. (Rock Solid Entertainment)

The Players: John Pringle, vocals, guitar.

Material: The genre classification on John Pringle's MySpace site is acoustic indie-folk rock. A fair description, but after listening to his live set there are also Celtic and country undertones worth mentioning. Pringle's themes deal with relationships and lessons learned in life. A wonderfully expressed song ("So Sincerely") is one he wrote for his parents.  Though most songs rank equally, the ones reflecting Pringle's personality and the life lessons he learned are best displayed in "Busted in Stockholm," McQueen" and "Paris Lights."

Musicianship: Pringle plays with a lot of confidence. His finger picking is superb. With minimal effort, he blends low and high notes flawlessly. His vocals exhibit a medium tone and vibrato that are melodic, hypnotic, and engaging.  Coupled with his poignant and offbeat lyrics, it's a wonderful trifecta that's easy to bet on.

Performance:  Flying into L.A. from Atlanta for this one appearance could not have been an easy choice. Making matters even more difficult is the fickle and, at times, nonexistent audience, especially for acts playing early.  But, as they say: "The show must go on." Sharing the stage with a stool, a Budweiser and his Gibson Maui Wowie acoustic guitar, Pringle played with passion, warmth and an unassuming demeanor.  His casual, easy-going storytelling between songs was so genuine, it drew the audience into his music.

Summary: Even with limited numbers in attendance, at the start of his set, Pringle displayed a workman's tenacity by performing expressively from the very start.  By the end of the show the audience had grown considerably, both in size and appreciation, ending Pringle's trip west on a high note.

So I got some funding to do a full length album this past month and immediately went into the studio.  It's located in the basement of the famous and supposedly haunted Biltmore Hotel.  So far things have been great.  We're about halfway tracking 18 songs and then the fun really gets started.  Editing.  I'd love to pull a Tom Sawyer and tell you how exciting it is in the studio, but I cannot tell a lie.  I can sometimes be quite tedious when you get to the editing segment.  But  sometimes it can be great.  For instance, my drummer JP played his throne/drum stool on a track last night and it sounded fantastic.  Almost like a super fast heartbeat.  Anyway, the new album is slated for realease in March or April.  My buddy Spencer Sloan is an amazing artist and is currently working on the cover art.  The album is tenatively titled "Midnight Mass on the Williamsburg Bridge".  Hope you're all well and keep an ear out.

Happy Holidays-john
